The 46 F/A-18s Australia offered Ukraine have just as good ad hoc runway capabilities and they could have had them in the air more than a year prior to them getting their first F-16.

When someone violates a court order, the judge who issued the order has the ability to hold them in contempt and issue fines or even jail time as punishment. Just this week, a federal judge found the administration violated a court order barring officials from deporting people to countries that were not their own without giving them sufficient time to contest it. It is not yet clear what the punishment would be. Not only would the bill’s provision restrict the courts’ authority, but it would make court orders issued before the law takes effect unenforceable.

At least one federal judge appears ready to issue such a citation in a high-profile immigration case involving the administration. Erwin Chemerinsky, the dean of the University of California, Berkeley’s school of law, wrote that judges could get around the provision for future cases, but hundreds of existing court orders covering all sorts of subjects – including the many lawsuits against Trump’s policies – would become unenforceable.
