    No official posts from them but you get the following on the upload page.

    repeated unauthorised use for forensic investigate genetic genealogy

    huge influx because of 23andme debacle

    Why accept uploads of DNA when you can sell your own service? Seems a logical commercial move.

    I suppose it was a way of attracting new custom.

    Also free uploads only had limited access to the site - you still needed to pay to get full access.

    The original idea was to grow their database and make it useful. They had periods where you could unlock all the DNA tools for free every year. The subscription model was only introduced in the last couple of years.

    They have over 9m people now so they can now just resort to sales. They sell them very cheaply too - under €40.
