I got that letter about a month ago (having had a VM engineer surveying the road late last year), they put the fibre on the house yesterday. Co-ax is still in place too.

    Excellent to hear.

I have 5Gb installed but waiting on X-ONU-SFP to arrive. Reseller in UK is waiting on stock which should be soon.

If only VM weren't slow to add modem mode as option directly on the hub5x I could get away for now.

Looking forward to getting this setup.

I have X-ONU-SFP ordered via reseller in UK. He is just waiting on stock now. Likely will also get hit with import on it.

It does support the 8311 community firmware? Yeah?

Out of curiosity did the WAS-110 come with the correct firmware already installed? I have just ordered the 5Gb service and a WAS-110 too.

Also what router are you now using? I have a UDMP hoping everything works the same.

Yeap. Comes preloaded with the firmware.

He even added your serial info for you, but it's not massive effort to do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 271 ✭✭NotShero

The sellers usually mention if it comes preinstalled with 8311 firmware. On the FiberMall website they let you choose which firmware you want. Even if it doesn’t come with it, you can just follow the guide to install it.

Nope, the one from FiberMall came with the original firmware, I don't remember seeing the option when I purchased otherwise I would have picked it. Flashing it is pretty straightforward though. One difficulty I had was that I tried to make it boot without having the fibre connected - it only worked after I connected the fibre.

I am using a Minisforum MS-01 running opnSense inside of a Proxmox VM, with NIC passthrough.

    Speaking my language.

Is VM using pppoe or ipoe. Running opensense as well. Although on n100. Should be grand performance wise.

I think fibremall are now offering community firmware as option. But only checked a few days ago..

VM uses IPoE. I am not sure if WAS-110 supports PPPoE - I've tried to connect it to SIRO when I had XGS-PON (now I have GPON on SIRO :( ) but was unable to. It could have been some other issue though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 271 ✭✭NotShero

You might need a different MIB file or configuration settings for SIRO as it’s a Huawei ONT. It says you can enquire on the 8311 discord about ISPs that are not listed.

Cheers lads. I've got the WAS-110 ordered from Fibremall it would be handy if it came with the firmware preinstalled but should be fine. Great work around to not have to use the VM router!

In terms of setup once the WAN-110 is installed and setup correctly… On the router is it just a case of picking DHCP and then VLAN10 and it just works?

Any chance of an idiots guide summary of all the above. Thinking of upgrading. Think I've a Hub 3 with a mesh attached. Sometimes I have it in bridge mode, sometimes not. Because they don't support bridge mode if you ring them.

Having increasing dropouts so it time to ring them again, and they'll say they can't see anything.

Yeah there is a video guide I’ve linked below but if you do have a Hub 3 you would be on coax and this is only for FTTP unfortunately.

Do you have “Modem Mode” showing for you already?

If “Modem Mode” is not showing and you're on coax, then you can only keep asking for “IPv4 to be enabled” to get you off of DS-Lite / CGNAT. Someone mentioned to Virgin Media that they needed it to connect to work and that got it for them.

If you are already using modem mode and you've the same issues then there’s probably something wrong with the connection along the way or congestion, do you have any FTTP options available to you from anyone else?

The plan is to up upgrade to FTTP. Have IPv4 plays nicer with our VPNs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 SizzleQuote

That's pretty much it. It works for IPv4 (without their CGNAT) and also IPv6, obtaining a /64 prefix.

VM only provide a /64 per household? No SLAAC? Do their own modems use DHCPv6 then?

Edit: misread your post. They provide a /64 prefix.

Brilliant. My WAN-110 is due to arrive today. Fibremall said they installed the 8311 firmware so hopefully they have done that correctly… but i dont mind having to do that either way.

So you get full dual stack by bypassing the ONT? Their DS-Lite and crappy hardware were the big reasons why I avoided them over the years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,654 ✭✭✭Thor

Nice. I have one ordered via better Internet ltd, but also ordered one via fibremall as there was some delays.

How long did it take to ship and the arrive.

I likely end up with spare 8311 if anyone needs one soon.

Just so people know. If you are buying a X-ONU-SFPP instead of a WAS-110, it is supported by the firmware but it's recommended on the 8311 website that you buy one that is already pre-flashed with 8311 firmware as the flashing process can brick it. Better Internet does preload it.

The WAS-110 can come pre-flashed also or you can do it yourself with the guide.

Better Internet also provide, according to their website, a 5 metre SC/APC to termination of your choice Single Mode fibre optic patch cable and a Fibre coupler (in order to extend off of your existing cable/termination point).

Would you know which termination it is @SizzleQuote? SC or LC? You could just use the one that’s already there from Virgin anyway I presume?

I was reading it has some bricking potential. Which is interesting. Thankfully yeah it's pre flashed.

VM installed box with LC out. Technically they can put either as they have multiple different cables.

I have lc to sc ready when sfp arrives. So will discount cable going to VM modem currently.

Well it looks like my WAS-110 is bricked… I had it preloaded with 8311 from Fibremall… it was only on 1 partition.. which I assumed would be fine to get it going. I put all the settings in as directed and rebooted the device and it never came back up. No SSH connection.. nothing. Tried with fibre connected and without. unfortunately nothing. UDMP sees the SFP port is connected but nothing happens… No WAN connection. Gonna have to try get VM to sort out the IPV4 to make sure I can get port forwarding. What a shame!

Oh that's annoying! Would this video help at all, go back to the other guide when he starts to put in the configuration settings at 13:00 as he is not on Virgin Media -

Ok the plot thickens… So I think my WAN-110 is actually overheating… I disconnected it and just reconnected the hub last night… I tried again today and I got access to the WAN-110 for a short period. While I was setting up to get ready to flash partition B (Fibremall only flashed 1 partition) the device became unresponsive. I know it needs a certain amount of active cooling but I though I would get enough time to at least get the thing working before an overheating issue. Its possibly a faulty unit either. Anyway the guys on the 8311 discord a very helpful and I have a fan on the way to hopefully fix the issue!!! Sadly in the short space of time I've had it working it wouldnt connect to VM. I am using a UDMP as my router… it seems to see the device there and sometimes will show as a VM connection but never actually gets a connection.

Separately I was onto VM to try get the Hub5x put in modem/bridge mode and they wont do that at all atm for irish customers on their fiber products… I have another week to get the WAS110 working before I might have to cancel the service! :( I know others are going to offer the service in early June but at a hefty price premium!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 271 ✭✭NotShero

Yeah, I thought active cooling was more of a nice to have rather than a requirement as it runs at about 60 degrees.

Virgin Media were still enabling IPv4 for people up to a few months ago anyway - https://www.reddit.com/r/VirginMedia/comments/1bnpsnw/comment/m57zfov/

I would say eir will be very similar price for 5Gb. They are both 500Mb for €35, 1Gb for €45, Virgin 2Gb for €55, eir 2Gb for €50. Virgin's 5Gb is €60, I would imagine eir will charge very similar. The upload speed will only be 250Mb/s with eir though.

Yea thats kinda what I thought tbh… And it might actually be a faulty unit. I thought I could at least get it to a point that my VM would connect but no such luck. And it becomes unresponsive so quickly I cant actually troubleshoot anything I've done in terms of settings. Comparing it to the video instructions it seems like the connection is there but my UDMP never actually shows a connection.

I'm guessing the VLAN 10 should be set on my UDMP and not the WAS-110. I have a 140mm fan coming to point at it in the hope I get it going.

So, the VM 5x Hub has a LC input. When VM installed here, they used a LC-LC coupler to terminate the fiber, on which they have connected the LC-LC cable. The Hub 5X came with a LC-SC cable in the box, one that I am currently using to connect to WAS-110. So it was just a matter of changing the LC-LC cable with the LC-SC cable in the coupler.
