The murder of the couple in DC is shocking and tragic. I'm heartbroken for them.

The guy was to propose to the girl in Jerusalem in the next week or so.

That the event was for humanitarian aid organisers is sadly ironic.

May they both rest in peace.

I'm sure there's still plenty of Gazans who support HAMAS but it was 50/50 at best when they were elected and I'd imagine it's a lot lower now.

No doubt of that - another representative that is not a terrorist organisation is required. But that's easier said than done unfortunately.

Yes it was false. The bbc have clarified where the figure came from and how it was reported was misleading in the extreme

The BBC later asked for clarification on the figure from the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), which said: "We are pointing to the imperative of getting supplies in to save an estimated 14,000 babies suffering from severe acute malnutrition in Gaza, as the IPC partnership has warned about. We need to get the supplies in as soon as possible, ideally within the next 48 hours."

It highlighted a report from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) which stated 14,100 severe cases of acute malnutrition are expected to occur among children aged six to 59 months between April 2025 and March 2026.

The IPC report says this could take place over the course of about a year - not 48 hours.

So disturbing to see those two Israeli Embassy workers murdered last night in DC. It's an appalling act that has resulted in a tragic and completely senseless loss of life. May they both rest in peace.

The motive behind the killing appears to be clear—the attacker reportedly shouted "Free Palestine" at the scene. But that only makes it more important to ask the broader question: Do you think the surge in anti-Israel rhetoric we’ve been seeing around the world, including from some world leaders, has helped fuel this act of violence? And, moreover, do you think that a continuation of this rhetoric is likely to fuel more such attacks going forward?

We also need to keep in mind that this conflict isn’t ending anytime soon. Realistically, it’s going to take years—maybe even decades—for the dust to settle on this war and for the future of Gaza to be decided. In the meantime, what kind of discourse are these leaders encouraging?

Also, just as a point of information, today alone the IDF intercepted two missiles fired by the Houthis. It’s a reminder that Israel continues to face ongoing threats from terrorist groups, even when it’s not making international headlines. I know some forum members were suggesting this this was no longer an issue in Israel, so I'm just drawing your attention to it for the record.

As long as I've lived and as long as there have been Jews they've been persecuted. There's only 15M Jews on the planet for a reason.

Whether it was Egyptians, Romans, Christians, Nazi's or Muslims and I'm sure many others. Thankfully Christians have matured and we don't feel the need to control our holiest sites because if the Christian world wanted to they could take over that region.

As we know Islam was created from Christianity and they asserted their dominance by taking over Jewish lands and building on their holiest sites. Unfortunately today neither religious group have matured and both want control over the same area. As long as Jews and Muslims stay loyal to their books instead of loyal to humanity there will be blood spilled in this region.

Both sides need to look towards moderate Christians and move on with their lives for the sake of humanity.

That 48hr figure was circulated all over social media. Sounded ridiculous to me but it sounded so extreme you were afraid to challenge it.

    And 51 Palestinians killed today.

Just to bring some balance to your post.

2 missiles? How many did the IDF fire to kill 51 people?

What is your point exactly? That the press and aid agencies should stop reporting what is happening in Gaza? Turn a blind eye completely?

Remember the international press are not allowed into Gaza so Israel control the narrative.

So when will you answer my question around Irish people being anti Jewish. I have asked twice now. And don't blame bloody Dev!

Here's the truth about the West Bank incident:

Palestinian guides led the diplomats into a forbidden area. The soldiers who fired the warning shots didn't know that the people were diplomats.

More bullshit - "Kilkenny Friends of Israel" of course that account is going to be one sided - Ill take my news from actual believable sources like from the actual countries leaders who were fired on.

Definitely not a "Friends of Israel" account on X.

Because of all the innocents murdered by the Israelis there will be plenty of support for whatever organisation takes over the fight against Israel. They will have no problem recruiting unfortunately. It's madness that nobody in authority in Israel cannot see that their attempts to wipe out one enemy is only increasing the likelihood of an even more brutal one in the future. Violence begets violence.

The only way the cycle can be broken for good is to treat everyone properly and as equals. Israel has always failed in that.

Well if some dude - a kilkenny friend of Israel no less - on "X" says it, it must be true.

Takes over through an election hopefully. I've a feeling the HAMAS approach wouldn't do the best in an election.

I don't know the full details of the double murder in DC. I don't know if the murderer knew that the two people he killed were Jews. Presumably, given it was a Jewish event, he assumed they were. So, on the basis of that, I had a think about similar events over the last 18 months and I honestly can't recall anything similar. There was the football hooliganism in Amsterdam a while back (no-one killed) but other than that I'm drawing a blank.

The issue I see now is that, as totally expected and mirroring the Amsterdam incident, the Israelis are ratcheting up the rhetoric to extreme levels. If you look at what EU ministers, UK, Canada etc. stated over the last couple days, it is all factual - I wouldn't call it "rhetoric" anyhow. there was nothing stated that was exaggerated. What Israel is saying however is way over the top in my opinion.

But in general, cool heads need to prevail and the rhetoric/counter-rhetoric trial by media needs to stop. I would be saying this either way round by the way - but I'll be honest and state that it is always Israel that ratchets things up - just like they did about Amsterdam.

For balance, There was that Jewish bloke who shot two Palestinians in a car in Miami but it turns out they were Jews (neither was killed). Don't recall Israel saying anything about that one.

But, and I do mean this, there are two dead young Jews today who had the world ahead of them. This is no time for anyone to try and score any political points. Give them and their families some space to process their sorrow and grief during what must be an awful time for them.

To add to the above, I do note your additional point of information. Most countries face terrorist threats - and threats that turn to action are to be condemned without question. But over-egging the situation in Israel doesn't help - Iron Dome is well able to protect Israelis. Of course, as you are well aware, it is guaranteed Israel/US/UK will now pound the living daylights out of the Houthis.

I wouldn't go as far as "evil scum" on the scant information known. The person arrested may have had mental issues.

Of course, that does not justify murdering two innocent Jews - but perhaps wait for full details to emerge. If it turns out he is evil and he is scum, I'm right behind you.

I was taken aback when I first saw it too. When the Beeb got clarification from the UN on where the number came from, they published it straight away. I posted that UN clarification too.

And yes, you make a good point - sometimes with these sky-high numbers coming out frequently, there is a danger of just assuming they are gospel. The devil is always in the detail.

Here's the truth about the West Bank incident:

That's a stretch by any account.

Whilst the IDF may not have been aware they were diplomats, I doubt they were unaware they were a bunch of people dressed in suits and looking official. And not carrying guns.

If anyone knows anything about guns (I'm not an expert) you don't have to fire directly at anyone to cause a whole lot of damage or kill passers-by or those in the periphery of the group. The video I saw showed the IDF firing horizontally - not directly up in the air (which is also no guarantee of safety either).

That they fired at all on people clearly on the other side of that large metal gate must be explained.

We'll wait for the corroborated evidence to come out - until then, its only speculation, not "the truth".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59,236 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Absolute exaggerated horror about those silly diplomats. wtf did they expect walking around the most dangerous place on earth? Sunshine n lollipops?

They weren’t killed. And IDF weren’t intending on killing them. But I guess it means people can latch onto it to bash Jews again.

walking around the most dangerous place on earth

Clearly - if I was within 100 km of IDF soldiers, I'd be worried. I certainly would not be wearing a medical uniform or a Press badge.

More inane nonsense with a healthy dose of blinkered views.

Do you think the surge in anti-Israel rhetoric we’ve been seeing around the world, including from some world leaders, has helped fuel this act of violence?

People like you are idiotically decrying any act as simplistic antisemitism. You can never apply the same argument to the same Israeli rhetoric and, crucially, actions against the Palestinian people. This is precisely where the violence comes from, yet you are simply satisfied to examine one side only in complete isolation and devoid of fact.

For once, apply the same morals to your beloved Israel.

Weren't you on here recently accusing others of "Propaganda"….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,381 ✭✭✭Suckler

And, moreover, do you think that a continuation of this rhetoric is likely to fuel more such attacks going forward?

Just once you could take moral responsibility for your narrow minded intolerance; here's a quote from Daniella Weiss (there's a few more choice one's)

"In Israel, there's a lot of support for settlements, and this is why there have been right-wing governments for so many years."

One of the arguments in support of Israeli actions is that the Palestinian People elected Hamas, albeit 20 years ago, therefore the people are responsible for the actions of Hamas.

Yet, it's been proposed on here and elsewhere that we cannot/should not hold all Israeli's responsible in the same manner for the actions of Netanyahu and his government.

And, to use your own snide language, 'I'm just drawing your attention to it for the record' that there has been continued popular support for the rhetoric and actions against the Palestinians for generations.

In relation to Gaza, her opinions are clear and have been supported:

"No Arab, I'm speaking about more than two million Arabs. They will not stay there... We Jews will be in Gaza."

    What is Israeli response to her and her 40 odd years of antics?……In March this year they nominated her for a Nobel Peace Prize. The reason given;

"Her decades long efforts in strengthening Jewish communities and promoting regional stability".

I'm guessing your moral compass was broken a long time ago.
