Jury Duty Selection

What a public minded citizen!

Dress nondescript. Too well dressed you'll be rejected by the defence, dress like a skanger and you'll be rejected by the prosecution. Other than that it's random selection

Last time I went in I calculated it was roughly a 25% chance of getting called going by the number of people in the jury selection room and those that are called. Can vary a lot depending on the number of cases scheduled for that week. As said previous go middle of the road dressed to have your best chance.

While it might sound great and interesting which I found it was, I wouldn't like to be handling any scumbag related cases that occured in or around where I live as you will likely be sharing public transport and walking route to and from court with the accused and their friends and family. I'd straight off refuse any case like this on the grounds you may know the accused or victim.

Don’t look over enthusiastic, they don’t like that, I was just about to be sworn in, looking forward to some time off work, stepped forward with purpose, excitement in my eyes, hand aloft only to be objected to at the last second.

You can't refuse to serve on such grounds. What you can say is, when the names and addresses of the witnesses are read out is that the names, that you think you know one of the witnesses. You will be rejected on that basis, not because you are scared on a bus.

I did jury duty last year and there was a guy in slacks and a Clontarf Yacht club blazer. He got drawn out 4 times in the week and was challenged each time! Not sure if this was his plan or not but he was exactly the opposite of what the defence were looking for

I’d say it probably was his “plan”- easier ways to get excused - a letter pleading to be excused in this occasion for whatever the reason is often responded to with an exception for that time - saving him a few days - personally i believe if you can serve then you should

I’ve just been called for jury duty. I’d prefer to stick pins in my eyes than be dragged into any form of a court case.
How can I not get picked? For reference I’m a mid 40s, not thin, nerdy female.

Dress like a solicitor or dress like lizzo. Depending on the case the defence or the prosecution will reject you

You could also say you think you know a witness or the defendant when the names and addresses are read out

If it's a sports related case you could say that you are a supporter of the team involved

Just go in and do it. Most people don’t particularly want to do jury duty - OP aside - but don’t think you can really complain about the justice system when you actively try to avoid being a part of it.

Called three times for what it’s worth. First time excused as I knew the defendant (guilty in my head before I even heard the charges), second time applied and was granted an exemption as I had a holiday booked and third time made the jury and couldn’t agree a verdict in a very short trial.

I got called in November. I enjoyed watching the video link with the court and chatting to people.

The judge and the accused were real characters.

I understand why some might find certain cases difficult and this would be allowed for if you had issues.

I went into a room with about 200 people.

We watched This Morning and Lorraine.

They did a roll call.

Then we connected via video link to the court.

First person pleaded guilty.

Then we watched TV again.

Then we connected to the court room again.

They didn't plead so a jury was selected.

I didn't get picked.

Then we were sent home.

Day two was

Lorraine and This Morning.

One case in the court room via video link.

Then were all told were told to go home and were excused.

I’m going to do it alright. I definitely did panic when I initially saw the summons.
Will hope for an early dismissal. As it happens Monday & Tuesday that week are my scheduled off days.. would be just my luck to not even get a day off work out of it.

was trying to google to predict case, but I’m stopping that now.

If you don't want to be picked dress up like a severe schoolteacher from the 1970's. tweed skirt-suit, unwashed hair in a bun, thick spectacles. No defence team will let you near the case.
