my life radically changed for the better, after becoming uncontactable outside of hours, no regrets what so ever, life is now infinitely better, you generally only get one chance at this life thing, never ever give up 'your time', ever!

I've been doing it for over 20 years now and I'm pretty happy with the balance that I have and I'm certain that I can continue the way that I operate and be more than happy with my overall life. I've probably tipped over the excesive end once or twice where Friday comes after a series of 70/80 hour weeks and I've a pretty empty tank but I know where that line is these days. But I've also not got too many more years to go before I don't "have to" do it anymore... maybe!

People act like what I'm saying isn't common

Oh no, I don't think people think it's uncommon. The reaction was to your comical justification of it, sneering at those not as enlightened as you.

working 80 hours a week wouldn’t preclude you from having friends, partners even kids tbh.

In this day and age we can do so much more work remotely. Working 80 hours now isn’t like the old days where it meant being in work for 80 hours a week.

Now that can be 8 hours in the office & a couple hours at home emailing or finishing projects off etc. my brothers an architectural technologist (don’t ask) — he’d often finalise drawings and 3D models after 5pm when he got home. He enjoys doing it a lot and it’s nice to work at home in your own space sometimes.

I suppose I can’t see much difference to doing some light work tasks at home and staring mindlessly at the TV all evening, watching the same programs over and over.

I can do some work in the evening while I listen to music or a podcast it doesn’t have to be intense and demanding. I think what you’re imagining is coming home at odd hours and falling into bed only to roll out of it the following morning at 5am to do it all again.

The modern workplace isn’t like that. Unless you’re a chef or something.

My work has zero impact on my personal relationships outside of having to cancel the occassional mid week dinner with a friend when I get caught on something. My family understands what pays for their home/education/holidays/clothes etc so they couldn't care less if I'm having dinner and then logging back in for a few hours midweek evenings or the odd saturday. They especially don't care if I'm checking my email in bed when I wake up or before I go to sleep while on holidays or when I'm waiting for them to get ready to go out for dinner. I don't dwell on stuff that can't be sorted out remotely and I can switch off my work brain pretty instantly when I want to. I'm pretty well equiped to compartmentalise my mind and I rarely discuss work problems at home or let it impact my mood. I work a lot but when I'm not in work mode I always try to maximise my enjoyment and time with those that I work to make happy.

I never said anything about anyone being less enlightened or sneered at anyone. I clearly said that technology just gives an extra ability for people that want to avail of the option to increase their profitability. My point was that those who don't want to do it shouldn't complain about not exercising that option or say it's wrong for others to operate in that manner to meet their goals. If anyone was sneering it was those referencing mental health or implying neglect of family relationships. Technology merely gives more options and makes it easier for some people to balance work commitments where they need or want to remain connected.

thanks for the kindness but it can’t be removed or hidden. It’s a stock android pixel phone, the only way to even obscure it is with an alternative launcher.

Course you have sneered you did to me last night by saying I wouldn't do it so have to be happy with a package holiday to Lanzarote as if its low. You did a lot of turning your nose up at people in that post

It'd probably preclude you from being an interesting friend or partner though. 80 hours a week means 11+ hours per day, seven days a week. Or 16 hours a day if you managed to keep your Saturday and Sunday free.

First we had the pagers, blackberries came next and followed by iphones. Next we will be replaced by AI.🤪 Good old days our tellies were black and white with one channel but our lives were colourful.

Apologies if that's how it came across. I've no problem with it myself and people are entitled to be happy with what suits them. My point was intended to be about people complaining about the affordability of things or coveting things that other people can attain while also judging them negatively for the extra effort that put in to get into the position when they don't/won't do everything in their power to improve their own earning potential. I wouldn't judge people who choose to have more down time and are happy with their circumstances as a result. We all need to decide what works best for ourselves and follow that path without judgement from others.

I understand them quite well, and how they are widely used to get around geographic restrictions imposed by app providers on pricing options.

So again, given that CNaM haven't specified any particular model to be used for the U16 restriction, please explain how you can claimsm that VPNs won't have a role in bypassing such restrictions?

I've worked my way up to a mid-senior level, but most of the significant changes came from changing jobs and negotiating salary and terms, not from anything I did internally at the time.

Like you I used to do 12 hour days, check mails and reply to things after hours, not claim for small expenses etc - but it still didn't stop my role being ceased (despite the requirement still existing) with only the bare legal warning and certainly nothing extra in compensation.

Luckily I found something else quickly but unless you ARE at executive/owner level, you're still just an employee and you will be gone if they need you gone regardless, and you certainly won't get (as) much internally in my experience vs changing companies
