Deserve what? Ah come on guys, you can do better than this?

Obviously he does live here longer than me so obviously he should know despite the amount of tax payers money being dumped into healthcare, healthcare is still shít , I mean it's shocking. Bar from other things. So there's a bit of a question, why he is so loud on Palestinians and not pushing home problems harder? I mean there's a long list of problems here to be looked at, isn't it? Yet we hear about top heads talking about suffering of Palestinians, in a so called rich country, which can't sort out mental health care, healthcare generally, housing, policing streets etc. Whenever I see progress in any of these things mentioned I'll be all up to clap for Higgins talking about free Palestine. Whenever we reach that point, let me know please.

President Higgins has spoken up on such topics as housing and the Environment. He does have other interests apart from Israel. I doubt the posters criticising him for talking about Palestine would ever get to the point where they would find it acceptable. They just dont want Israel to be criticised full-stop.

In theory (and traditionally) the Irish president is meant to keep his/her gob shut on virtually all specific issues, foriegn and domestic. Mickey D has used the office in a unique manner, and fair play to him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,846 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

They don't like what he says because he's correct.

    And it frightens them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,257 ✭✭✭xhomelezz

So in theory would be better to keep his gob shut and work to improve things.. That would sound like a unique manner to use that office. Will that happen? I don't think so..

Michael D Higgins has a bigger mandate than any single politician in this country.

A President doesn't have to keep his job shut, but the moanbags will always want him to because they know he's right and they know that public opinion is very much on his side.

As grim as the flattening of Gaza has been for the last 18 months, theres just something about this current period which is hitting me as a moment in history that will be looked back on in decades to come as shameful, almost like the Holocaust, and I don't say that lightly or am trying to trivialise the Holocaust.

The world is standing by and watching as a nation armed with every imaginable weapon is eradicating a race of people, with no-one able to make them stop. They are claiming they won't stop until they eradicate an invisible enemy, which appears to have stopped fighting back a long time ago. No-one will be able to quantify when exactly Hamas are defended, so in theory it allows for a war with no end.

And those they don't bomb out of existence, they will starve them out of existence. And maybe a few years down the line, any that survive will be told to get out and piss of somewhere else because we like your land and want to build holiday resorts there, and because some old book told us it's ours, you need to die or move.

    Sad times we live in.

Yet everyone is playing games against Israeli football teams, everyone is singing beside them in Eurovision, running beside them in the Olympics. Everyone is so spineless.

Irish presidents have been vocal on numerous topics for years. The two Mary's were never afraid to speak up about things when they felt either.

There are people who'll blithely whinge about Higgins no matter what he says or does because he's on the left and nothing more. That's the extent on their "thinking" about practically everything, and they're worthless.

It's pointless even bothering to get into any discussion with someone like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,490 ✭✭✭Odhinn

How would he "work to improve things" if he didn't comment on them?

And what specific power does his office have that would allow him "work to improve things"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 877 ✭✭✭Miniegg

    Who is guys?

It just seems you would use any excuse to have people stop talking about the ethnic cleansing operation being undertaken by Israel.

Being here 20 years I'm sure you know that Higgins has no power to improve mental health services or healthcare, he is the head of state. Not his remit. But he did give plenty of years service to the Irish people in his prior roles, and comes across -unlike many politicians - as someone with conviction.

As for your sneery posts when people have the temerity of questioning your obvious bias in this conflict, you still haven't actually nailed your colours to the mast on your opinion on the conflict - why is that?

And lastly- and most importantly - if you and your children were days away from starving to death because some psychotic nation felt they had the right and justification to with-hold all your food because terrorists attacked them - would you hope politicians in other countries would speak up for you?

I can't imagine Mary Robinson would remain silent for a moment on Israel and Gaza if she was President now. Much of her career has been dedicated to protecting human rights.

It's pointless even bothering to get into any discussion with someone like that.

Well with that approach you defo wouldn't be candidate for any discussion..

Why you guys are being so touchy? He's just as much my president as he's yours, the thing I don't really get is why so much attention is being payed to some conflicts in abroad and I don't really see the same pressure applied to sort out domestic problems? I don't mind Higgins as a president, if that's what you think btw.

As you said I'm failing to make a point so no point repeating it 😬

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 877 ✭✭✭Miniegg

How animated do you get when talking about the 97% of people killed in this conflict (who happen to be Palestinian), Vs the Israelis killed on October 7th (which make up 3%) I wonder?

Just because you think 3% >97%, most people know that isn't the case…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,541 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

Mr Higgins is happy to turn a blind eye and get into bed with Iran. Either he's morally corrupt or can't understand how one both sides in a conflict can be bad. Either way he's no hero but a disgrace to the free people of this nation who support the struggling Persians in Iran.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,846 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

And how often do you tune into listen to what he says on a topic other than Israel's atrocious ethnic cleansing program?

You don't like what he has to say on the subject because it's an honest appraisal and it makes you uncomfortable. So you think that he should "keep his gob shut".

    There's nothing more to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 877 ✭✭✭Miniegg

    "Get into bed with Iran"

What does this mean exactly, can you elaborate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,257 ✭✭✭xhomelezz

Wow, you've certainly made loads of claims there. Just as expected. When you do try to push your point of view at any cost and automatically assume I'm a sort of evil, because I won't nod to everything posted here, that would put you on the same side of the aggressor this thread is having a go at? Not everything is black and white. It would be great if it was though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,257 ✭✭✭xhomelezz

You just making assumptions as usual here..

Edit: So you think that he should "keep his gob shut".

That originally came from other poster here, in case you don't read or follow. Just saying, before you'll have another go..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 877 ✭✭✭Miniegg

Go for it - try slither out of it and don't answer any of the questions, good lad.

Oh, and it's fine not nodding to everything here. Just you never seem to "not nod" to the crowd who tell us Israel aren't bombing civilians, there is no starvation, warcrimes are justified and so on.... nope, those people get a very obvious free pass from you. Why is that?

So again I'll ask - what is your opinion on Israel's conduct in the conflict? Do you think it's genocide given all the evidence you have seen?

    Fairly straightforward questions.

There's a big difference between a nation that has typical issues with housing, healthcare and whatever your having yourself and calling out a Genocide and War Crimes.

The President leaves the day to day running of the country to the politicians and the civil service. He speaks on behalf of the nation regarding world affairs, particularly for those who are persecuted and being ethnically cleansed.

Given that the population of increased since Oct 7 2023, it is hard to describe this as a genocide unless the least successful ever; aid would be less of an issue if Hamas didn't insist on controlling the distribution of same; and do you accept that Hamas are using civilian infrastructure (including hospitals and schools) to store weapons, as command centres, and as access points to tunnels?

And the leaders of Hamas are living the high life in Qatar.

I'll just say it again, this is the only successful echo chamber thread created on boards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 877 ✭✭✭Miniegg

Given that the population of increased since Oct 7 2023,

Where on earth did you get this from?

Id suggest you scrutinize your "news sources" a bit more before you embarrass yourself on the internet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 877 ✭✭✭Miniegg

Gas. Another thing you have in common with pro ethnic cleansing crowd - complete inability to answer simple questions...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,152 ✭✭✭dmcdona

It's been a while since that 'auld canard has been posted here.

Do you have a particular number of deaths (or percentage) that would constitute Genocide? If you do, you should let the UN know. Because their definition of genocide does not include numbers.

IDF ready to start Concentrating Gazans and Italy is the latest country to call out Israel.

    • The IDF plans to divide Gaza into three separate districts and force residents into them should cease-fire negotiations fail in the coming days, the Sunday Times reported, citing a map leaked by diplomats who were briefed on the matter. According to the report, Gazans will be prohibited from passing through areas under military control.
    • On Saturday, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called for an immediate halt to Israel's offensive in Gaza. "We have to tell the Israeli government, 'that's enough,'" Tajani said, adding that "we no longer want to see the Palestinian population suffer. Stop the attacks, let's secure a cease-fire, free the hostages, but leave in peace a people who are victims of Hamas."

    I think it's actually 3% := 97%.

There's no winners here in relation to how many more lives are important to the rest of you're thinking 97% is more important than you have it wrong. That any life is lost is a tragedy but I'm a pragmatist. A war is ongoing and wars result in people dying.

But looking at the facts, Hamas started and maintained this . Israel wasn't going to sit back and let them keep on firing rockets into Israel or staging another incursion.

Hamas built tunnels under people's homes knowing what could happen. They used hospitals, schools and homes as operation centres. Israel had 2 choices, fire back with the resulting consequences or let Hamas build up again and attack again.

I'm no more pro Israel than I am pro Gazan but I can understand why Israel is going all out. Like it or not Israel has a right to be there and to exist and has a right to defend itself and ensure Gaza isn't a threat to it ever again.

It's been well known for a time that you won't get any answers, only endless questions will be asked, no matter the post.. Gas is how the few posters go around with blinkers on and any attempt to talk is being turned into this kind of mess. Gas it is as you say.

You can not claim to be neutral and then advocate for the continued killing of Gazans no more so if you said the same about killing israelis. If you support the war against Gaza you are not in any world neutral.

Perhaps when the israelis attempt to deport the Gazans we will see who are the true humanitarians on the Israeli side
