In Thailand the King would give a courtier that had fallen out of favour the gift of an albino elephant.

To prestigious to refuse, too expensive to keep. And you couldn't make them work.

That 747 is a white elephant.

The USAF has over 200 C17's.

Qatar has 4 C17's and use one for VIP transport.

He's a narcissist. They are not people to be followed or admired. In fact they are the people that should be the farthest from government as you could possibly imagine.

It's an easy way to try and distract from the current shïtshow. It's also curious that they're suddenly believing every word written by CNN and Axios journalists. Aren't they supposed to be fake news? 😉

Just like Donny isn't fit to hold office either. So we can agree that Kamala was the best option of the three candidates then? Cool.

With Trumps "Big Beautiful Tax Bill" the devil is in the detail. Just read it last night.

If somebody is earning $15,000 or less a year, they will see a federal tax increase of 18.7% by 2027 going up to 53.5% by 2029 and 74.3% by 2031. 😯

If somebody is earning between $15,000 and $30,000, they will see a tax increase of 11.7% by 2031, a lot less.😯

Why is there not rioting in the streets? Maybe the Americans on low wages don't fully comprehend whats going on with this Trump smash and grab. Sure is an eye opener. If it happened here in Ireland, there would be a lot more fight and push back on this.

lol reminds of the time a number of years ago I read the tax proposals of the now defunct (afaik) Renua party.

Their self proclaimed simplified flat rate tax system would have had me paying double in tax over what I was actually paying at the time.

My opinion is that a significant portion of Americans are very much out for themselves.

The mentality is that if you aren't making it, work harder, get another job, whatever needs to be done - side hustle etc. If you can't make it, that's your own fault.

It's part of the reason I find some very short tempered. It's like America doesn't care about Americans. They don't have proper health, college costs a fortune and they don't have any employee rights. There's also an acceptance that it's okay for people to live in trailers, or worse their cars.

Amongst the working class, there's significant credit card debt, along with "keeping up with the Joneses" pressure.

All of it combined leads me to think that most have a "me against the world" mentality.

They're like that because they've been conditioned to think like that. It lets the state take its hands off of their responsibilities towards its citizens.

Americans are entirely correct to distrust their governments and the apparatus of the state because when the push comes to the shove it doesn't give a damn about them. If you fall on hard times, it's tough shit. The problem is that the loudest of them then go and vote for Trump who's just sniggering up his sleeve at how dumb they are to fall for his bullshit. Because he isn't going to make American lives any better.

Trumps thinking is probably that migrants tend to do the low paid menial jobs of $15,000 per annum or less, so lets tax them out of the USA.

It's a dog-eat-dog, survival of the fittest/richest society. I could certainly never live there. I don't think I'd survive long term!

Most people are like this. Think of the opposition from NIMBYs to new houses, the pushback against tax increases to fund public services or some of the behaviour we saw during COVID for some examples.

What differentiates America from the rest in my opinion is what happened there during the Second World War. I should probably say what didn't happen there. The United States was never occupied and was feeling the benefits of FDR's New Deal. The mainland was never directly attacked so most people never experienced any of the horrors experienced by many Europeans.

Europe by contrast was bombed into rubble. Reconstruction meant a fundamental rethink in the role of the state. This led to the creation and expansion of what we call the modern welfare state, most notably the National Health Service here in the UK under Clement Attlee's Labour government. Free healthcare at the point of use for all. Hard to imagine something less Anglo-Saxon or capitalist but it happened.

Nothing of the kind happened in the US so the whole "I'm alright Jack" mentality was never seriously challenged. It syngergises quite nicely with the concept of the American dream where people migrated to the place en masse to get what they can get. It's always been that way when you look at stuff like Manifest Destiny.

The US is what you get when you take Capitalism without the social contract. European states tend to prioritise the social contract which involves slower growth, lower wages but healthier and happier societies. In the US, the powerful economy masks these problems but this only works in boom times. Come bust, the cracks appear and they're deep.

None of this will get fixed of course. The constitution that they're all so devoted to was written by land speculators and slaveowners. It's working as intended. It provides the average American with the semblance of a choice with the result being irrlevant.

    No we cant agree.

Trump was the best option of the three, that is why he was elected.

The best of a bad bunch but the best nonetheless.

This is the reality of the so-called "American Dream". People, who for the most part, couldn't give a fück about each other. Only interested in making money, getting ahead and beating down on those they think are beneath them. Felon 47 just tapped into that because it's exactly who he is too.

Well to be fair , that a percentage increase , not percentage POINT increase.

So if the tax was 10% , it's increasing by 74.1% in 2030 bringing it to 17.41% etc.

Now don't get me wrong - It's still horrendous and it's only the lower paid that see ANY tax increases - People earning hundreds of thousands will see their taxes drop permanently , but the medium to lower incomes will see their taxes creep up slowly over the next few years.

Typical Bait & Switch by the GOP - Lock in the permanent tax cuts for the wealthy and hope to be out of office when the taxes increases for the masses (which is what happened with Biden in his last year as Trumps 2017 tax cuts expired for most).

Do you believe that the world (and the US in particular) would be in a worse place today if Kamala Harris had won??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,732 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

So you think the person who is rolling back on basic civil rights, firing competent people and replacement them with the incompetent and calling for ethnic cleansing is the best option? You've ignored everything he's done, you don't care about how innocent people suffer and may even enjoy it. You don't care that he's threatening American citizens with deportation or that they're planning to suspend habeas corpus, you'll just declare as some kind of strategy that you're fine with. You think a tyrant is the best leadership for the US, that's the reality and you don't care how corrupt he is. At least you're admitting that you support him at least.

By the same rationale, Hilary Clinton was the superior candidate in 2016.

Somehow I believe Biden or Harris would be focused in on important issues, as opposed to this deranged clown...

Racism is why the US doesn't have universal healthcare. The gift that keeps on giving. I was skeptical for a long time of the ideas put forth with the 1619 project, but the truth is inescapable. Almost every social issue in the US has at its root the desire to suppress minorities, and the poor.

How the president can say such utter nonsense is beyond me. He firmly believes he is somehow responsible for Taylor Swift not being in the news.

For the record, she is on vacation after her world tour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,062 ✭✭✭scottser

He was and still is a shockingly bad president and human being. Harris at least is a normal, well qualified and sensible politician. As for the legitimacy of the 2024 election, well we'll see about that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,739 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

    Yes, without doubt.

We could be in the midst of WW3 if she was in "power".

Not that she would be the one making the decisions if she had been elected mind you.

Trumps bark is far worse than his bite, the world is a much safer place with him in the Oval office.

I'm not sure you're going far enough into the details. One of the complaints about the bill is that it adds yet more complication to the code, but generally speaking, most folks seem like their tax bill will go down because of the various increases in deductions.

If you are earning $15,000 a year, your federal income tax bill is $0 before you do any other calculations, because the current standard deduction is $15,000. The new bill increases this to $16,000. If you're over 65, add another $4,000 to that deduction. If you've been doing your calculations by looking at a table such as the one here… https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/10/trumps-tax-cuts-who-benefits.html

…taxable income is the amount you have to pay tax on after deductions and the like, not the income you actually received. Now, the argument about the folks within that bracket after deductions (eg folks actually earning $35k) having an increase in effective tax greater than those earning $50k is valid enough, but there are going to be a number of other credits and deductions (not the same thing) which may apply to folks in different stages of their life that it's going to be difficult to make a direct equivalence.

Temporary increases in child tax credit (In addition to the 'newborn savings deposit' credit or whatever they're calling it, which seems like a good thing to me) and especially the SALT credit increase in places like California or New York are also going to be well received, though arguably they are more political (otherwise they wouldn't be temporary) than true policy. Then again, the bill also extends a whole lot of other temporary credits which would otherwise expire and increase tax bills. The ability to deduct interest on your car loan, that's a not insignificant additional boost, even if you do have to buy American-built to do it. But the most popular new vehicle in the US is the F150, built in Kansas and Michigan, so all good there (The paperwork may be a bear, though)

Small businesses are also getting a 3% increase in pass-through deductions. That includes anyone on gig economies like Uber or my own sole proprietorship.

There is plenty to talk about in the bill with regards to various policies, and the overall Federal tax take is going to drop significantly (Though some businesses are certainly going to like the R&D or factory construction provisions). But when Joe Bloggs is filing his taxes if this is passed, I'll bet he'll be paying less. Yes, many of the cuts will expire by the time Trump leaves office, but that just means folks will be no worse off than they are now.

Going down the conspiracy theory route again? There's absolutely no reason to believe she would send us down the path of WW3. I'm sure she wouldn't be calling for the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, wouldn't be threatening the existence of NATO and wouldn't be threatening Greenland with invasion. She would be competent and that's the reality. Global stability is far more threatened than it has been in decades thanks to Trump.
