Putin is one of the biggest and most murderous criminals on the planet, start from that point and everything becomes clear. He saw some advantage in doing what he did, thats why he did it, whether it makes sense to us or not.Next week, he will do something else. You are dealing with a psychopath.

No mental gymnastics here. War began in 22 zero contact since then. Russia announce they want talks send their negotiators. So that means they don’t want peace or to talk. Okay.

So many lies in one paragraph

    Where to even start?

Is that the new tactic? Just flat out lie lie lie

    It demonstrates no such thing.

How do you "string people along" without strings? The sham talks are the strings and of course it dupes enough people who really should know better to serve its purpose and is merely a pretext for the Russian propaganda machine to peddle the lie that Russian has any real interest in any sort of lasting peace in Ukraine.

It is just a means to buy time and disarm and weaken their opponents and after all Putin has done with regard to Ukraine and other treaties and agreements to credit them with any kind of good faith in negotiations beggars belief.

This is the same Russian administration which has flat out lied multiple times in public about the contents of previous agreements and who signed what.

Yep even the Ukrainians on the front line must just lie lie lie…

"I hope they will find a solution. Because people are dying here and there (in Russia). But Putin is greedy. His hunger for our land is insatiable," says Yana.

"I want to live in Ukraine, not Russia. We have seen what they do under occupation, what they did in places like Bucha –their cruelty and torture."

That's kindergarten levels of logic in fairness. Sure Ukraine may as well send in Coco the Clown so, because that's who they want to negotiate "so be it".

It's about demonstrating a genuine desire to bring about meaningful negotiations leading to a peace treaty. That's what the two leaders attending would have demonstrated. People have been saying for a long time now that despite his posturing, Putin has no interest in peace. People have also been claiming the same of Zelensky. And here we have it - Zelensky swallowing his pride, taking the outrageous treatment by Trump and Vance on the chin, and agreeing to meet the international criminal in person to negotiate a peace treaty in respect of that criminal's invasion of a sovereign country.

Based on your recent posting history in this thread, however, I think you already know all of the above but it just doesn't suit your agenda.

This was floated to try and stall/distract attention from the 30-day ceasefire and stop the US from upping sanctions on russia.

Outcome has been trump looking weak, putin looking chicken and weak and Zelensky the only of the 3 following through.

putin is really yanking trump as hard as he possibly can.

Meeting in Istanbul turned in to $hit show. Putin asked for it and he did not go, Trump says he won't go if Putin not going. Zelensky not going because Putin not going. Trump wants all the credits and saying it can only be solved if he meets Putin. Wtf. Zelensky should tell both of them feck off.

Zelensky did actually go to Turkey waiting for Putin who proposed the meeting of leaders “without preconditions” to show up

    https://thehill.com/policy/international/5301562-volodymyr-zelensky-vladimir-putin-russia-ukraine-turkey-talks/

and Russian propaganda even covered the arrival sneering at Zelensky for nearly tripping on stairs

Putin proposed the Turkey negotiations to deflect the pressure that had been building for a 30-day ceasefire. He figured that once it became clear no meaningful negotiations would be taking place the head of steam for a ceasefire would be unlikely to build again because Trump has the attention span of this guy

Bild reporter now picking up on this offensive also lately. Last night he reported of another cauldron which has very quickly formed east of Myrnohrad. This morning he is now reporting that the Russian advance has pushed further on towards Mykolaiv. The whole area was just flat a couple of days ago.

Trump coming out this morning saying he wants to set up a meeting with Putin and today most talk will no doubt be mostly about demands for an unconditional ceasefire ASAP.

Further south they took control of the islands in the Kherson region between the banks of the river in the last week. Could just be a diversion to get troops sent back to the region than a risky attack over the river you would imagine.

Squints at map so three or four fields reported by a friend of Russia on Twitter as a major advance

The Twitter is account is so funny. Put “journalist” and Ukrainian flag on it to make you think it is genuine but when you look at what is posted on it….

It would like putting a Mercedes logo on a Lada and say: “Look at my new Mercedes”. Laughable really.

Yes he went Ankara met Turkish President. It was planned to go to Istanbul until Putin decided to send one his clowns. Trump said he may go Istanbul Friday and now says nothing will be solved until he meets Putin. These two clowns are playing with Ukrainians future. Not that they give a $hit unless they get what they want.

That's the 3rd F16 to be lost. How many did they receive?

    From start of this year

96 F16s and “two dozen” Mirages

I doubt the Europeans will continue to enumerate in detail what they are sending, France never really did and Germany will stop providing lists

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,865 ✭✭✭zv2

@Marty Bird "The fact that he initiated the talks demonstrates that they want to talk. If it’s stringing people along then why make the suggestion in the first place ?"

The literal content of what Putin says is not usually the issue. He speaks to manipulate people and control the situation. Putin is interested in the effect his words have, not their literal meaning.

It looks like history is starting up again.

I wonder what Marty makes of “the fact” that Putin started this war

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,354 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

They've received nowhere near 96 so far. I think it's closer to 12. The allies need to get their finger out.

As for Russian gains they're always making some small gain here or there but for a few months now their momentum has seriously slowed. For the next 4 and a half months it'll be perfect weather for attacks. It'll be huge if Ukraine can reach the next mud season without Russia regain momentum. Maybe even a counter attack from Ukraine thrown in?

Denmark transferred 12 of 16 as of this January, Norway claim as of yesterday they will transfer all they promised before this year end

Whatever they had at start of this year impression I got it was more planes than they had trained pilots which is being done on parallel

It’s hard to find exact figures (and going forward Russians won’t be getting a heads up until it’s too late for em), I wouldn’t get too worried since planes are coming from reliable and serious European states like Denmark, Norway and Netherlands who deliver on everything they promise on time unlike the fickle Americans

2025 is the year Ukraine gets more weapons and ammo than Russia both qualitatively and quantitively, and that’s ignoring the massive ramp up within Ukraine itself

Time is not on Putin’s side

To be fair, that’s the total number of aircraft promised, not the number of airframes delivered and operational. Those numbers are, unsurprisingly, not publicly available for OPSEC reasons, but I’ve tried to piece together a coherent picture.

According to this article from just a few days ago, Denmark had delivered 12 of the 19 F-16 it had pledged:

    https://militarnyi.com/en/news/norway-to-hand-over-all-operational-f-16s-to-ukraine-this-year/

Numbers are pretty much impossible to get for any of the other nations, but this piece by Reuters from December 2023 states that the Netherlands were getting ready to deliver an initial batch of 18 aircraft.

    https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/netherlands-deliver-18-f-16-fighter-jets-ukraine-2023-12-22/

Given the age of the article, my assumption is that this batch has been delivered in its entirety

Another article from February 2025 states that another batch of F-16s had been delivered from the Netherlands, without stating any numbers:

    https://bulgarianmilitary.com/2025/02/06/netherlands-sends-another-batch-of-f-16-fighters-to-ukraine/

It is not specified how many airframes were delivered, so it could be anything. But given that the article states that the Netherlands pledged 24 aircraft, my suspicion is that this batch would be made up of the 6 F-16s needed to bring the number from 18 to the pledge of 24.

This would leave the total number of delivered F-16s at 36, which would make sense since this is the size of an aviation brigade in the Ukrainian Air Force. It would make sense to group all of the aircraft together in one brigade to make logistics easier. If we take @RoyalCelt’s number of 3 losses as factual, that would leave Ukraine with 33 operational F-16s, plus that first batch of 6 Mirage 2000 delivered from France. Keep in mind that these are back-of-the-envelope calculations based on very little available information with quite a bit of guesswork thrown in. Also, these numbers don’t take into consideration how many of these aircraft were transferred to Ukraine but are based at the F-16 Training Center at Feteşti Air Base in Romania.

It is worth noting that so far, only Denmark and the Netherlands have actually delivered F-16s. From what I can see, no aircraft have been received from Norway or Belgium yet, and I’m not sure if the transfer of Greek F-16s is still going ahead. I’m also not clear about the total number of aircraft pledged by the Netherlands. The original press reports stated that 24 aircraft had been promised, but I’ve since read that their entire fleet of 42 aircraft might be going to Ukraine. Either way, there’s going to be a sustained stream of F-16s coming into Ukraine for some time to come, and we’re likely going to see at least one if not two more aviation brigades equipped with these aircraft.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

My understanding is that they have as many F-16s as they have pilots/support logistics for. I expect Thomil has the correct picture about F-16 supply.

Best not to have any surplus in Ukraine where they could be targeted by the Russians.

    re Norway

We know they were sent and being used for training in Denmark in 2024

Transferred in full presumably once training completed this year

There is also an an unspecified amount from Czechia used for training

This latest ‘Peace’ seems to be falling apart mostly because the person who called for it refuses to attend and his back up guy - the president of the United States - allows him to get away with that refusal.

One can only be shocked and horrified as Ukraine is being hung out to dry by its former protector - NATO - which itself is being hallowed out by the current occupant of the White House. Mr. Trump has no regard for history or for allies and is happy to work with a dangerous invader who has so far run rings round him.

Surely Europe and its NATO members are going to have to stand against these partners in kleptocracy - the US may be NATO’s largest member but a betrayer, even a large one, can surely be ejected.

It’s interesting that Norway actually pulled their F-16s out of mothballs to assist with training. It looks like it’ll only be around six aircraft in total, but every airframe helps as far as I’m concerned.

As for the Czech contribution, my understanding is that the article is much more of an op/ed “think piece” than an actual commitment for aircraft. Czech aircraft manufacturer Aero Vodochody (Named after the location and factory in the town of Vodochody, north of Prague) used to be one of the primary suppliers of jet trainers to Warsaw Pact members, producing over 6000 L-29 “Delfin” and L-39 “Albatros” trainers. Ever since the fall of the Iron Curtain, Aero has ceaselessly updated the L-39 design, with the L-159 ALCA (Advanced Light Combar Aircraft) being the latest evolution. They’ve had a few sales successes, but nothing coming close to their glory days, despite massive attempts by pretty much every Czech government since the mid 1990s to push sales to every country whose representatives couldn’t run fast enough. To me, that article is more about pushing the current government to advocate for the purchase of new L-59s or L-159s by Ukraine than anything else.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!
