Because Bauer Media Audio Ireland have the money to run Dab test trials. Can considering Bauer give away hundreds thousands week .

Well there is a huge question over that competition that both the CnaM and ComReg should investigate. I don't see how it as any different to TV3's Play TV.

ONIC is NEWS UK not Bauer, so that is not the reason.

Sorry if discussed elsewhere, but a quick question on RTE Gold reception.

Why am I able to receive Gold on some STBs and not others.

Many No information, and Testcards appearing? Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 125 ✭✭Aidan McCarthy

Most set top boxes you will get rte gold and regarding to the test cards are appearing too much about 8 test card channels which we don't need

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,873 ✭✭✭Charles Slane

What make and model of set-top boxes do you have that don't receive RTE Gold? Is there a separate list for radio channels? Is RTE Gold the only one you don't receive?

Sorry but I don't have the saorview boxes. With virgin media ireland but you might know someone who has saorview box or television

The Saorview updates is pretty boring to say the least, all we have is a bunch testcards to look at. Since its launch 15 years ago I was expecting a whole lot more.

There are 8 test card channels and we don't need all these test card channels or are they going launch some new channels or what's the story

Thanks for taking an interest Charles.

Bit complicated, but here goes.I'm able to receive God on channel 32 at a friend's location about 10 mile away in County Down,on an old stb, cost a tenner a few years ago.

If I plug a Humax HD-Fox T,into the same aerial feed,no Gold, just 'No information, and several sync test cards with the 'contact engineer text.

I believe this expensive Humax was the default go to supplied box at digital switch over at the time,I've tried two Humax stb same model same result.

No software updates come in over the air or ethernet cable.

I can get Gold over the App,but not my prefered way.

    Don't think DVBT,or T2 involved,but wiser heads may know.

All the other RTE channels available, just not the Bouquet with Gold I'm after.

II'I'about to try another Humax box shortly, comes with record hard drive, guess one day Freely type service may make all this sound like The Cats Whisker.!

I've said this several times before. The bandwidth taken up by the test cards would be empty otherwise. It still has to be transmitted anyway, so they might as well do something with it. It's up to the channel to make a carriage agreement with 2RN, they can't just put channels on themselves.

Why are you so concerned about the test cards?

It is not Saorviews intention for you to actually view them. In fact on an approved TV or set top box they are hidden. We would all like decent additions to the service but there are different reasons why it is as it is. For some, the test cards are a good indication of changes happening and as Glaceon says the bandwidth they use would be empty otherwise so what's the harm in them?

"I'm able to receive God on channel 32"

Is Highway to Heaven on it too?

I quite like the Test card,it's useful for lining images up,and checking resolution.

Do they still use the 19 lines out of vision at the top for tests!

Broadband costs money, and Netflix and the rest even more money. Enjoy the free content via the aerial and dish while we still have it. Lots of average punters round where I am. Every house has an aerial.

I wonder they will let go of the free market (advert funded). All of the trad broadcasters have some from of on-demand service, which includes live stream of their current channels and with the intro of Freely in the UK.

I don't think we'll see any new broadcast channels in any of those testcard LCNs.

The future is OTT/IP/HbbTV streaming possibly part of the planned DVB-I pilot, with the testcard LCNs allocated test streaming channels.

Expect to see RTÉ Player at LCN 9.

I'd not be surprised if TG4 +1 (full channel) and +2 are the first test transmissions on the DVB-I pilot.

Is there any hope of the RTE News channel going HD? I dip into it reasonably regularly and the picture quality is shocking.

Also, weren't Virgin Channels meant to be HD? Seems an own goal that they're not - for example Six Nations I'd probably watch on Virgin but the PQ is bad so I watch on the BBC….

RTE News is better than it used to be, they gave it a boost after Sky News launched. VMTV is only in HD on pay platforms or via their streaming apps. They refuse to pay for HD carriage on Saorview.

Does it improve any when it is in full screen for sports, mass, government press conferences and live oireachtas?

RTÉ News Now might go HD when the +1 stop broadcasting, would the removal of the Radio Stations provide any more picture quality to the channel?

I don’t know about now but it used to be in 544x576 most of the time, except for events when it was bumped up to 704x576. It’s at 704 all the time now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,264 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Are they still planning on getting rid of +1?

That would be a ridiculous move.

I watch the +1 more often than the real time channels, especially this time of the year when it doesn't get dark until later.

Part of their new direction following the fallout of the scandal last year, I think the plan is for 2029, but radio stations were due to close in 2024 and it still hasn't happened.

Yes they are but when we don't know yet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,508 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

So who was going to provide that content and how was it going to be paid for?

@reboot did you try a retune? Are you getting both RTE1 TV and RTE2 TV on the boxes? (this proves you are getting both muxes)

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

The Irish Film Board channel still exists as part of the broadcasting act 2009.

There is a sense that you need expensive TV on DTT. Soarview has proven this to be false. +1s which I am not a great fan off, simucast children's channels, VMTV repeat channels of no particular value and Challenge.

I had said here on boards many years ago (as a different user) that DTT would only ever have to have RTÉ ONE, N2, TV3 and TG4 to be put on the service. Ultimately that is what we have got, just a few extra repeat channels of no particular public service value.

Do multi city / national stations still need to be within a range? More of a requirement / convenience for a time when you needed to manually retune the car radio as you went; and I suppose for listener directions in advertising / logos.

Increasingly obsolete now with car radios discovering channels and re-tuning frequency seamlessly. Would wonder if anyone under 30 could find or use a retune dial / button in their car?

Have also noticed that stations (like Today FM) no longer using frequency in their logo.
