I presume we'll go with the same 23 as last week - worry is that Benetton have a really strong set piece (scrum and lineout), and then pace to burn.

Id start Scannell for the scrum and hope we've figured out some form of lineout plan.

I'm not worried about our scrum. It's been pretty strong since the 6N. Our own lineout is the issue.

As for pace to burn, well we've got a bit of that ourselves.

I think if our pack put in the same effort as the last day against Ulster we should beat them. If our lineout improves even 50% I'd be even more confident.

Treviso are no walkover though, no room for complacency at all. Should be a great atmosphere at this one, especially with a final send-off for the stalwarts.

I'm not happy with a 6-2 bench but Kendellen is a handy extra forward to have coming on.

I think if we improve the lineout even up to 75-80%, we'll win. Benetton have the backs to hurt us, but we've got plenty of gas with Abrahams, Nash and Kilgallen too. Farrell and Nank seemed to gel a bit more in the last couple of games too.

There'll have been an emotional element to last week, so hopefully that won't affect things and we'll get to the right pitch early.

Season stats are off the chart for Tom Farrell - taken from independent.ie

According to figures circulated by the league yesterday, he’s first for carries (223), offloads (40), post-contact metres (217 metres) and second for defenders beaten (58) and minutes played (1,293) in the URC.

He has been one hell of a signing in all fairness, consistent in all he does, but so bloody effective.

I was concerned when Frisch left that we'd struggle to replace him, such was his importance to our attack, but if anything Farrell has been an upgrade, he's had an absolutely brilliant season. Two jackals and a couple of brilliant tackles as well last week on the other side of the ball.

You'd think he's a shoo-in for our player of the year, which is serious going when you consider the season Gavin Coombes has had.

Fully agree, Frisch had a subtle side to his game, but Farrell has been immense, the fact we haven't really felt the loss of Frisch says it all.

Yeah Munster has been unlucky. Chris Farrell could have been that guy all along but he had to go through no fault of Munster.

Farrell has been class. One they van rely on to carry hard and make meters when they need it. He's so aggressive, great to watch.

Plus add his ability to get his hands free, some of his offloading has been top class this season. Absolutle gem of a signing, and really suits how we're trying to play.

Unchanged 23 from last week to face Benetton.

Munster Rugby: Thaakir Abrahams; Calvin Nash, Tom Farrell, Alex Nankivell,  Diarmuid Kilgallen; Jack Crowley, Craig Casey; Michael Milne, Niall Scannell, Stephen Archer; Jean Kleyn, Tadhg Beirne (C); Peter O’Mahony, John Hodnett, Gavin Coombes.

Replacements: Lee Barron, Josh Wycherley, John Ryan, Fineen Wycherley, Tom Ahern, Conor Murray, Seán O’Brien, Alex Kendellen.

Probably our best 23 that would remain unchanged for the remainder of the competition (assuming we qualify to the knockout fixtures) unless injuries force a change.

Can't think of anyone that would force their way in at this stage.

Casey making his 100th Cap, that snuck up on me.

Given the lineout issues there might be an argument for Ahern to start given his size, but he brings great impact from the bench tbf.

Only ones I could think of are Jager for one of Archer or Ryan and Loughman for Wycherley. Maybe Edogbo for Fineen as well, but might be a bit too soon for him. But not sure on when they are likely returning from injury, mind.

It's as good an injury profile as we could've hoped for at this stage of the season tbh.

    Is Haley injured or dropped?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,220 ✭✭✭budhabob

Had a reasonably long term injury and only came back recently, played well in his game back but struggling to break back into the team (i think)

Diarmuid Barron and Jeremy Loughman are injured, but maybe could be back in time for the quarters and both could take bench spots potentially, maybe Barron could even get into the starting 15.
Edwin Edogbo shouldn't play at this stage in the season in my opinion, not worth the risk of injuring him.
Mike Haley is about the only player available that could come into that 23, but I'd say at this stage Abrahams has the jersey.
I think O'Brien is next up if we get an injury at centre,
Smith is next up if we get an injury on either wing,
Haley is next up at fullback if Abrahams gets injured.
One option would be to go with a traditional 5+3 bench and have Butler instead of one of Wycherley/Kendellen.
I think Quinn or Gleeson are probably a couple of injuries away from the 23 at this stage.

Strong team, and great to seen Edogbo back in a team.

Hope Edogbo goes well for 25/30mins🫣

Farrell is definitely worth a look at internationally, he's been brilliant. Interesting that Seán O'Brien, who has put in some super performances for us, isn't getting game-time on the wing. Kilgallon must be highly rated. He looked fantastic the other day.

Great to see Edogbo back in action. He'll be like a new signing for us next season, serious heft and grunt work that will free up the likes of Coombes to do his thing with ball in hand even more, Tom Aherne too. Is the younger brother injured or just not in the frame?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,698 ✭✭✭50HX

Agree with o brien...it's great to have meaningful competition in certain positions.

Farrell won't get a sniff of international rugby imo...he'll be deemed too old & not investing in the future.

I'd love to see him capped

He's young enough to be a proper option at the next world cup, that's all that matters in the current cycle.

Liam Coombes? Cousins, I think, he's been injured for a fair while unfortunately.
