Never mind you defending a person who was trolling another poster

. That was my point . Said poster has gone now disappeared but no doubt to return again in another guise ..

You're correct, no one has to believe me.

Not so surprisingly the people who don't believe me in regards to this issue also don't believe me on anything else, and are typically hostile towards anything I say about anything and have no problem making statements about me and usually my level intelligence.

So it's reasonably understandable that I don't particularly care what those people think either.

If you want others to engage in good faith with you then there has to be a buy in where you the same.

If anything comes out of this feedback thread, people having a little bit of respect for each other might just be the most important thing.

Of we can remove all the low level snark and insults the whole place would operate more smoothly.

Maybe a little but I think that the main thing was that there were more people who were interested in better things than peddling outrage.

    I don't think it's a Boards thing, I think it's an internet thing.

Back in the day it was harder to be online, any clown with a phone now can post to their hearts content.

I think it's a culture wars thing. I also think there are certain topics where the reasonable middle ground get drowned out by the loud voices at the two extremes. I suspect reasonable people can't be arsed engaging with the loud voices after a while, so just the loud voices are left.

I also think there are Internet witch hunts in general now, doxxing etc. so some people are afraid of putting their heads above the parapet if it may affect or fear it may affect their employment. Probably contributes to the emotional bent when these topics are discussed.

yeah it’s like everyone’s just lost respect for each other online. It’s gone into a Wild West situation.

I think perhaps you are taking things a little personally. It was a discussion about defamation. It isn't a case of believing you or not. There is a legal definition of defamation and if defamatory posts existed they would be obvious. It's not personal

You literally said that not one has to believe me in your previous reply to me.

I'm not taking things personally, I'm observing that a number of people here are happy to make statements about the person saying something as they are about the topic itself. There's a dose of inserting things into the equation apropos of nothing also, simply because it's part their perception of the situation rather than any factual connection.

You feel defamatory posts are always 100% removed on this site, I disagree. End of story.

Do you not remember the old Feedback forum back in the day? Some of the multi quote posts people would put together ripping into each other were a sight to see.

And don't get me started on The Thundedome. I saw some absolutely horrid things posted about people in there over the years. Wouldn't stand at all now.

Good point. People on the the damn tube won't offer pregnant women seats now because they've their noses buried in their phones.

I actually don't think defamatory posts are necessarily removed a 100% of the time. I don't that Trump or Musk discussions are hives if defamation that you seem to be implying they are. In fact, I'd say much of the views are expressed are pretty much in line with outlets across the globe. The fact you're choosing not to point to the actual defamation just indicates it wouldn't hold up to basic scrutiny and it's likely even showing up in Irish news publications cause it's not defamatory.

He says with low level snark included!

You talk as if you are so hard done by.

I see you arguing on every thread the same way . Say something , argue don't discuss , people reply, you move goalposts , they reply asking you to discuss what they / you posted originally . Always ends up no questions answered , no resolution , just bad feeling

You blame others but at some point you have to include all parties in the blame game .

    And that includes YOU .

The only thing that I've refused to do is post links and I've explained why.

Nothing offered as evidence is ever good enough so why would anyone feel incentivised to do so? We're not compelled to do so, why are you and others so worked up about it? Just get over it.

I haven't seen a link provided in any discussion change anyone's mind in years, so what's the point?

I believe one thing, you belive another. It's not a big deal. Why this constant obsession with "winning"? It's ridiculous, mostly because nobody is ever wrong here to begin with, whatever the situation and alternative opinion is automatically wrong and the person presenting it must be incapable of understanding it properly.

to be fair are you not as bad then for engaging?

You state you have observed precedent from the poster in regards bad faith posting yet continue to attempt to engage as though you’ll receive a better result?

All I can see this post being is an excuse to air grievance. Which you did previously with another poster here also.

Why all the hostility? Sorry, but nullzero is not wrong, you are incredibly hostile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,009 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

I don't engage anymore because of the constant earache and whinging from NZ .

Every bloody thread how many posts to say nothing and just argue nothing

And you are one to talk about hostility ! Give over .

It's not about winning @nullzero . It's about reaching some sort of resolution or compromise.

I was not talking about your present discussion . I am just tired of seeing you arguing continually. For pages and pages .

Say something , reply and then move on .If you are not getting anywhere at that stage it's not going to end well.

I don't think that's true, I have learned plenty on boards, and have had my opinions on certain things challenged and changed. With proof from posters. I mean isn't that the whole point of debate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,519 ✭✭✭Flaneur OBrien

I agree with you. If you ask for a source, and someone posts a Daily Mail link, or a Fox News link, I think you're completely entitled to challenge that.

Some think posting a link to back up a point should be the end of the debate, whereas I only ever see it as a part of a discussion

My plan you ask? to whittle out everyone off boards who doesn't share my worldview of course, then the same thing I attempt to do every night, Goldengirl. Try to take over the world!

Why are you replying to me then?

I remarked on a couple of issues, I wasn't insisting I was right and everyone has to take what I'm saying at face value.

I honestly don't even care that there's defamatory stuff lurking around the site, I just commented that it happens and seems to be acceptable in some cases more than others.

That got turned into me saying I think nobody should be allowed to criticise Donald Trump or Elon Musk, two people I've never displayed any affinity for as it happens.

Now you're telling me how and when I should post. Seriously, if I annoy you that much there's a pretty simple solution.

It's interesting that this has popped up here because it's a good demonstration of what's going wrong of late. Time was, mods would step in and tell two people bickering to stop replying to each other or use the ignore function, could be something worth revisiting and some constructive feedback.

Anyway, to get back to the discussion that opened up re the problems on page one, and before the thread is locked -

I said this on the first page - 8th of April

This is my first post anywhere on the site for 3 months (who cares sez you, which is fair enough, but how many more like me have done the same?) I've already seen fantastic posters close their accounts recently, after years of excellent posting, because of what CA has become

I made my own personal decision to not contribute to the site from the start of Jan - I didn't close my account, I just sat back and dropped in for a look occasionally watching how it all played out -

It seems I may not have been alone

    boards analytics.jpg

Looked at another site and -

    boards analytics 2.jpg

The issues mentioned in the first few pages seem to be the problem and don't seem to have been addressed, and certainly no announcements made about it here - I did think anecdotally *coughs*, that things had got a bit better, but seems to be back to business as usual now

I know my own usage of the site is down a lot since Christmas, but that's to do with the 'elastic band' bouncing glitch when trying to scroll down a thread, I spent a full five minutes once scrolling just to see how long it'd take to settle down

The bouncing page issue has to be the root cause for so much of a drop off.

It's a complete joke tbh. I know, I know... complaining about a free to use site... But it's just fundamentally so painful to use.

It's crazy that 6 months down the line the most basic of basic functionalities: a site that that just simply loads correctly - you know like the rest of the Internet - has never returned or doesn't look like it's going to happen any time soon. What is going on? Boards is actually broken.

If the site is never going to improve from from a UX perspective then I'd nearly prefer to hear that at this point.

I'm still here because I've semi institutionalised to the place at this point, but why would anyone else even bother? No wonder activity has fallen off the cliff.
