Buttons on cars need reinstatements instead of those distracting touchscreens

Wired printers too. How many peoples eyeballs have i wanted to gouge out with these wifi/bluetooth ones. Just let me plug it in, hit send and print!

Heard during the week that there will be a row back on touchscreens in cars.

Can't recall the exact detail, but certain regularly used functions will have to have buttons/ switches from 2026 ( I think).

    No harm at all.

Headphone jacks on smartphones. We know now that the only reason Apple removed it was to sell AirPods. Then the likes of Samsung just copied them.

Fuk I just bought a Samsung. Didn't notice till you pointed it out.

My really good headphones are wired because I didn't want to constantly worry about yet another thing needing to be charged.

Also fuk printers with no wired option. Is it that hard to offer both.

That a gift. Even with budget phones it's hard enough to get a jack.

Just put a couple of knobs on the airfryer. So much handier than adjusting the time and temperature with touch buttons.

    People just love pointless tech.

Ovens , fridges , household items connected was a completely pointless development of the modern world.

Apps for your car - seriously , can we just get in the car and drive

Pointless drones flying all over the shop - recording data centers worth of pointless footage.

General use of phones and recording concerts , sport events and even someone singing a song in a pub or something - daft ****. Enjoy the moment

Apps and Tech linked to sport , sleep , health - can people not just enjoy all above or use a bit of cop on and memory and enjoy the ride.

The whole use of air pods in every space is getting a bit daft - full on conversations on a bus , using them in a steam room and sauna. Seriously - can you not just relax in your own head for 5 mins, or a mad idea - say hello have a funny Dublin chat.

General quality of streaming remains poor / unclear - the day of sticking in a Blue Ray / 5/1 , 7/1 concert or movie on a top level home set up was special. Very hit and miss now.

Old Lap Tops and PCs were bullet proof - modern stuff is pure shite and 5 times the price.

New household goods , all the bells , whistles , digital - but they all last about 18 months - old stuff focused on the engineering. It is all tech on outside , but pure **** inside.

II like to think I live in the real world.

Wait forever for the discarded technology to be reintroduced, or buy an inexpensive adapter so I can continue to use my wired headphones? What to do?

I'd be a bit worried about damaging the USB C port and then the phone is fooked. It's not designed to be constantly plugged in as a jack. Too many stresses on it.

I went another way and just went back to a separate music player with a balanced headphone jack.

A fair point. Not optimal, given that the adapter will be on the bottom of the phone. Maybe there is an ergonomic adapter designed to fit securely to the bottom of the phone with the audio socket on the side?

I think most of them seem to simply a cable with USB C on one end and then a 3.5mm plug on the other.

I'm sure they work but just imagine that lateral stress on the USB port on your phone with something sticking out of it as you walk about.

Yeah you'd need something really secure that had a flat base against your phone that stopped those stresses. Can't seem to find one after a quick search.

Nice excuse to buy a fancy DAP and fill it with FLAC music!

This. Saw a review for a Bosch washing machine recently but half of the cycle types were locked behind a wifi connection and use of the Bosch app. And wifi only, no bluetooth or local based connection, absolute madness. What possible reason is there requiring your washing machine to be internet connect other than data thieving and future subscription model for the app…

I bought an airfryer with two big knobs for this very reason. I also bought a nice simple Russel Hobbs microwave with two big knobs for the same reason. The digital controls on the microwave in a previous place I was renting were almost impossible to get my head around.

Euro NCAP will deduct points from cars from 2026 onwards which don't have some minimum controls accessible via stalks or buttons.

anyone remember being able to see all the most recent posts from actual friends on Facebook?

    I absolutely despise the algorithms.

The appification of society is out of control. Prime example, cars. If someone has an electric car they will likely have separate apps for their car, electricity provider, home charging point, solar inverter if they have one plus multiple apps for public charging and parking. The car will regularly need an "OTA update" which could be related to anything from security to adding a new "button" on the "infotainment screen". The owner will think about how wonderful technology is and feel a visceral disgust towards those they deem to be luddites. OMG he drives a manual diesel car, I bet he uses cash too, OMG get with the programme!

Utter nonsense and the dopamine hit addicted normie simpletons who have embraced it are spending a good proportion of their finite lives with their heads buried in smartphones. It is also a factor in rampant consumerism, people get bored quickly and chase the next dopamine hit, they HAVE to buy the latest car (On PCP of course) because the infortaiment screen is, like, 2 inches bigger than the old one and it is, like, sooooo much faster and better.

I'm finding that middle aged people are some of the worst for this whereas those in their twenties can be more sensible. Maybe it's because smartphones etc. are just normal for them and they don't see an expensive phone with 1000 apps on it as a measure of their status and value.

    I have an electric car.

I have one app for topping up my credit to charge publicly. No other apps related to the car. And 99.99% of my charging is done at home. With no app.

There is always usefulness in having stuff connect and controllable remotely imo. For dishwashers and washing machines allows you to start cycles when not there to take advantage of solar generation peak or have a washing machine cycle finish just as you arrive home rather than stuff sitting in a washing machine all day wet etc.

Phones should just be a limited set of apps - weather, bus times, some limited news\sports scores like ceefax.

No video streaming. No access to the entire internet. No need for apps for everything.

AI technology - I was laughing at an article yesterday, HR professionals now lamenting the fact that even though they have been using AI to sift through job applications for years, now that the applicants are using AI to apply, write their CVs, cover letters etc it's an issue. HR are now inundated with hundreds of applications that are getting through the screening processes by having AI write exactly what the job description requires.
Maybe they should go back to old-fashioned reading the CVs and pick them that way.

The app to switch on heating or AC in car in advance is very useful.

Think I have one for my charger, one for car which I never need to use (newer cars generally all have one). Use different apps if I need to charge on the road but no biggy. I get an update of some kind of update on the car and it's every few months at most. That part isn't unique to electric cars though, would apply to any newer car. I use android auto which is pretty much standard in any newer car too.

So basically outside of charging apps which you use once in a blue moon, none of this seems particularly unique to electric cars. Just sounds like a rant about electric cars when all the issues can apply to any car from the last five years or so.

I do hate infotainment screens and car functionality operating from them and other such enshittification but once again it's all cars.

You can get the Apple ones for about a tenner.

Surprisingly given Apple's love of money they are the sweet spot , way better than anything cheaper and way cheaper than anything better.

    Very thin cable though.

It's one of these + a fan. The rest is fancy electronics to turn a relay on and off and blinkenlights.

Like old school microwaves the only control you really need is a clockwork dial that goes ding at the end.

I got a new fridge once that had "smart fridge" stickers all over it. It had one single smart feature and this was it:

Samsung Refrigerators, ranges, and ovens have a feature called Sabbath mode which adjusts your appliance to meet the requirements of certain religious laws for holidays and days of rest. This mode prevents the appliance's panel and lights from responding to input in any way, either from pressing buttons or opening the door.

Some cookers have those electronic temperature controls. How is that better than a knob you can twist in half a second?
