Hansen over Graham is a head-scratcher.

Am surprised that Prendergast has missed out. If the announcement was last week, he definitely would have gone. Don't see any great benefit in bringing Marcus Smith

Irish and English other way round? 9 forwards, 6 backs

i think Scott Cummings and Mack Hansen are real surprises there though.

most interestingly, no Willis, No Farrell

That’s a very strong squad. Feel they got it right. Aching for Doris. Delighted for Kelleher, Conan, Ringrose, Mack, Beirne, Ryan, McCarthy as those less certain than the other very proud bunch from Ireland.

Not sure how they pick as besides Northamption the other englisg sides have been hockeyed in europe and the premiership isnt exactly super strong. A lot of this comes down to TV, if there are not a loot of english in a squad people dont watch and England id the bigegst market for the Lions..Wales thrown a bone with 2 players…

yep, my bad, adjusted in the OP.

i think we've done extremely well to get 15 onto a 38 man squad to be honest. Delighted for Ringrose and JVDF, who should have travelled last time. Gutted for Doris.

Osborne/Tommy O’Brien/Darcy Graham should be in ahead of Mack Hansen & Eliott Daly

    So, potentially a team of:

    Porter, Sheehan, Furlong,
    Beirne, McCarthy,
    -, Conan, Van der Flier,
    Gibson-Park, -,
    Lowe, Aki, Ringrose, Hansen,
    Keenan.

    Kelleher, Ryan

I see the sense in M. Smith over Sam P. the formers ability to play 15 to a decent level is important in a tour environment. 3 dedicated 10s is a luxury.

They finished highest of the Home Nations in the 6N…

He covers multiple positions which is useful for this kind of tour (and he's a good player).

He's only an OK player, in my opinion. He's supposedly an option at full back, but he's poor enough there. It's a big squad, so covering different positions is not overly important. If Russell and Fin Smith are available, I don't think that he'll come close to the test squads.

    Daly going is a joke

I doubt he'll make the test squad either, but the same could be said of a number of players chosen. If they wanted a 3rd ten to fill in where necessary then Marcus Smith was the obvious choice to me - someone like SP can't slot in elsewhere. I think calling him a poor fullback is fairly harsh as well.

He'd make a good substitute if you're chasing a game.

Youve got Keenan, Kinghorn, Daly that can play 15.

IMO controversial selections (lesser calls in brackets):

LCD and Kelleher over George (and possibly Lake)

Cummings over D Jenkins (and Lawes)

    Pollack / JVDF over Willis

    Hansen over Graham

Fair play to the media, managing to get Marcus onto a tour he should be nowhere near!

12 for Leinster is a record, held previously by Munster in 2009 (10 over the course of tour).

Not surprised Hansen is going to be honest, his playmaking off the wing is a unique trait he brings over the other wingers, and is central piece to the Irish attack.

I think Joe McCarthy is a bit lucky to be there, not sure his performances have warranted it

Mack hansen and James Ryan are very lucky

Osborne and O'Brien over a player who is always picked ahead of them (and delivers something neither of them can). Hmmm

Disappointed for Bealham, think he's straight up a better TH than Furlong at this point. Think Prendergast has been better than Russell and Marcus Smith this season but Saturday hurt his chances greatly. Daly going is ridiculous, especially given there's multiple players who are better than can cover 10 and 15. Osborne and Graham both better options imo.

    Intersting question re M Smith

barring injury, i think he'll start the First nations / pasifika game, and he might bench on some of the other franchise games.

However for test games, do you keep slots 21 and 22 for guys who can only play 9 and 10, and then 23 has to cover the rest of the back line? Daly would be perfect for that, and shows perhaps why he is a selection.

i think it would be a travesty if M smith benches ahead of F Smith, but can i see it happening??? yeah possibly.

    I'm not.

As a Leinster supporter I've watched him play himself out of it for the last few months. He needs a long pre-seasom, time to recover and take stock. He doesn't need a Lions Tour right now. There'll be 3 more for him to go on, all things being equal.

Who else should have gone though as third choice? I would have had Farrell personally but brought M Smith as a back 3 option but Farrell hasn't played much this season, Prendergast killed any chance he had last Saturday, Crowley has been poor most of the season, had some good games but more poor than good and Ford imo is behind everyone else mentioned.

He didn't really have a huge amount of options of anybody in decent form other than Smith as that third 10.
