Yeah the rural standing charge is insane €422.23! Massive increase on last year, I switched to Energia because of it. Flogas would have been cheaper but for it. I guess it's a hedge against wholesale electricity price increases down the line and a way of keeping the unit prices competitive looking.

How long does it typically take to change over? I signed up with Flogas on the 26th of April. Have gotten the initial email. Currently with SSE & my usage hasn't been appearing for close to a week so wondering if that means it's gone through? Thanks

Hi, i have a stupid question. For the

BWG Smart Dual Fuel Day/Night 18 Month Fixed Energy

do you need a day/night meter or is that a night rate as its a smart meter it kicks in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 922 ✭✭✭ECookie13

Wonder is it a case of "say nothing and they'll forget".

My energy plan is up for renewal. I have a Smart meter but have never chosen a Smart plan. Is the advice still to avoid the Smart plans as they lock you in forever? Or do they work out much cheaper? I have no EV or solar panels or anything like that.

You need a smart meter. This is a smart plan so will activate your meter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,720 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Yes that's still the advice. The smart plans are crap for about 90% of the population

put your details into the energypal webstie and see the recommended plans are for you, the smart rates are getting more competitive but it’s all depending on each household really

    The internet isn’t for everyone

Update - Flogas just called me (I was planning on calling them this evening) - they said there has been a technical issue with some people signing up to the BWG offer. Asked was I still happy to switch over. They said they're crediting my account with €30 for the inconvenience.

She said the only thing I'd need to do was to submit an updated gas reading. I thought she was going to ask me to send on the BWG offer letter.

I never even thought to ask about the Emerald Park tickets.

I got a phonecall from Flogas offering to sign me up to the 24hr BWG plan I had applied for which hadn't gone through, I didn't bother going ahead with it.

Dumb question. energypal.ie is amazing. But it doesnt ask my existing provider (which wins again).

If im already with energia = and the winning plan inlcudes 75 euro cash back - can i get this? do i have to ring them… i dont see that offered online. Is it a better strategy to switch to another provider, then switch back the next year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,984 ✭✭✭bren2001

energia typically don't offer new customer offers to existing customers. They will give you an offer to stay but usually it is worse. When you initiate the switch, they may make you a better offer.

There's no strategy. Just go to whoever is cheapest the day your contract is up.

No tickets for me, I have a funny feeling I won't get them as my welcome email never arrived after I signed up on 1st April. I did call them and they confirmed I am on the BWG contract.

I was in similar situation with Energia. Had a smart meter installed and wanted to switch from 24hr plan to Smart Data 33 plan.

Offered me poor smart meter rates as existing customer. Switched online to the BWG Flogas smart plan on 02/04 but after 4 weeks and no action I gave up and switched to EI. After signing up online, EI advised my account switch was in progress after 3 days.

Energia rententions team (called lost contract team or something) called me and offered me the Smart Data 33 and €100 cashback.

Note - you cant call them back if you miss their call, but they should call again. If your 14 day cooling off window is closing, call the customer service line and ask to speak to retention team and they will forward on a message you called.

It seems mad from a business sense that it costs Energia €100 to give me what I wanted before switching, but I guess theres more folk who dont make the switch than do to make this practise worth their while.

Actually forgot about the Axa Plan afterwards and should of asked for that, but the annual difference between the two plans in my case is €24 so wont be losing any sleep.

@yankinlk - So yes you need to do the switch. Energia are hoping you dont. And the Smart Data 33 plan with lower rates and €100 cashback is far better than their Smart Data €75 cash back plan which has slightly higher rates.

Incidentally Flogas actually called me back yday asking if I still wanted to switch - they must miss out on a bit of new business because of shambolic systems.

Thanks! Very helpful. I plan to swap to EI at the least. Was with them before and found them good anyways. I get the extra Supervalue 30 euro thing as well.

On a side note looking at the HDF file is always useful. 79% of my usage is at 2-4am! Less than 4% at peak. I think next year is my payback year based on rough calcs. Lot quicker than i ever expected. And since i used a 2 year CU loan rather than cash this whole solar adventure has been a total no brainer.

I only recontracted in the middle of April and got tickets the other day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 953 ✭✭✭POBox19

    Just in:

    Hope all is well.
The emerald park tickets are not part of the BWG Affinity rate.

    Kind regards,
