So ive been getting some system crashes but its been 10 days without a crash since i disconnected my wired USB xbox controller so im pretty confident that was the issue.

I plugged it back in this morning and the system refused to boot, upon disconnecting it boots up fine.

Can a usb device be so troublesome as to prevent a system even booting?

Now the issue seems to be how if ever can i use this yoke, ive been using updated drivers, even installed xbox accessories app as i read it as a suggestion somewhere but as of yet this device is proving very troublesome and close to getting binned.

Ive also been using Device Cleanup app again another recommendation but as of yet hasnt fixed the issue.

The controller in question Turtle Beach Recon which is actually a very solid yoke to use.

As your PC boots up it will look for boot devices. A USB device can be a boot device so if this is not in a good way it can cause the system to behave badly as it tries to query it for information.

Have you updated the firmware and/or reset the controller? Double checking as you don't explicitly mention it. Worth a shot and would be my first port of call.

Drivers and apps won't fix it as they are only loaded after the OS is installed and seeing as you are getting the issue before boot it's something closer to the hardware if not the hardware it's self. Firmware is software written directly to the device so making sure this is in working order at least rules out that potential issue.

If this doesn't work, try different USB ports and if you are consistently having an issue just bin the controller. Some might recommend updating your BIOS of your motherboard but I suspect you didn't change that before you were having issues so I seriously doubt it's the cause here and not worth it if you are not comfortable doing it.

I presume you’ve tried a different USB port? Ive seen USB devices before stopping windows from booting.

To me you need to move around your boot sequence in the BIOS, have USB as the last option for checking on Boot and I would be fairly confident that would solve your issue.

Thanks guys, firmware is up to date according to xbox accessories app.

I did update BIOS last November as i was trying to troubleshoot BSOD but i tracked that down to faulty ram stick and got it replaced.

I have changed to a different USB port and so far so good, it was in one of the blue coloured ports in the pic below but ive moved to one of the cyan ones lower down beside the ethernet port.

What you've done is move it to a different USB controller. As in the chip on the motherboard controlling the ports. The blue ones are USB 3.0 and the teal/cyan ones are 3.1. USB tend to be handled by the CPUs chipset and 3.1 is an extra controller on the board. It's fixed your problem but I wonder what caused it in the first place. Maybe count your blessing and move on ? :)
