Leinster confirm the Doris injury and that surgery has been scheduled for this week. I'd imagine that's him out of the Lions tour entirely. He was a shoo in to be a test starter and maybe captain the your as well. Feel so bad for him.

Just seeing this now, that's a real shame.

Will stick my colours to the mast here on my prediction for the announcement tomorrow.

Props: Porter, Genge, Schoeman, Furlong, Stuart, Fagerson
    Hookers: Sheehan, Kelleher, George.
2nd Rows: Beirne, Ryan, Itoje ©, Chessum.
Back Row: Morgan, Baird, Earl, Van Der Flier, Curry, Pollock, Conan, Doris if fit, 1 of Faletau/Lawes if not.
    Scrum Half: Gibson-Park, Mitchell, Williams.
Out Half: F Smith, Russell, Farrell.
    Centres: Aki, Jones, Tuipulotu, Ringrose.
Back 3: Lowe, Freeman, Graham, Van Der Merwe, Keenan, Kinghorn, M Smith.

    38 total: 15 Irish (14 w/o Doris), 13 English (14 w/ Lawes), 8 Scotish, 2 Welsh (3 w/ Faletau)

    Some thoughts:
Quite a few of the Irish selection aren't in great form. Still think they offer more than others not chosen.
Baird only makes mine as he can cover backrow and 2nd row.
Realistically Doris doesn't make it so 1 of Faletau/Lawes to bring some experience to the back row. Faletau can cover 6/8. Lawes 5/6 to bring extra options.
Again, most of that backline hasn't been on a Lions tour so I'd bring Farrell for experience, along with the fact he can cover 12. The Irish and Welsh 10 contenders aren't up to it at the moment. Wouldn't personally consider Ford.
Would bring Marcus Smith as a full back. Can cover 10 if needed. Kinghorn plays wing for Toulouse so lots of different options and combinations available.

Interestingly no-one is picking Prendergast. Can't disagree, though he is an incredibly skilled player any decent team will exploit his defensive frailties successfully. He needs to at least become a speed bump before he can be regarded a serious test ten.

Sam can't defend yet pundits are putting Ford and Marcus Smith in their teams? Ok

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,058 ✭✭✭✭bilston

The media and social media has done a bit of a 180 with Prendergast. It's one extreme to the other. I'm not a Leinster fan (not Munster either) and have felt since the start of the year that Crowley should have been starting in the 6Ns, but some of the stuff about Prendergast over the last few days has been ridiculous.

He may yet make the squad tomorrow as I think F.Smith and Russell are nailed on, but the third spot is wide open and Prendergast did start at 10 in a Triple Crown winning team. Its definitely one to look out for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,168 ✭✭✭ersatz

Yeah, I don't disagree. Im fairly neutral on the provinces but never understood why Crowley got so few minutes and no meaningful starts, even if I give the coaches the benefit of the doubt for what they see in training. But Crowley would be a stronger candidate for the Lions for me, he just hasn't had the game time to warrant it. But against a Joe Schmidt trained Oz team I'd be picking him all day over Pendergast. Rewatching the Leinster match I was reminded in the first couple of minutes that he also has a habit of being a bit casual about kicks, he was blocked down in Leinster's 22 on one of the first kicks of the match. While no player was responsible for Saturday, it was a team plus coaching collapse, there's one other moment worth remembering about Sam on Saturday. 61st minute the ball comes loose in Leinster's 22 and the NH 6 picks it up, falls and he gets back to his feet as Sam tackles him. He drives Sam backwards (as you'd expect) and eventually breaks free as Sam falls to the ground, we are now 10 metres from the Leinster line as NH recycle sam is lying on the ground out of play with his hands in the air as if he's claiming a penalty, he's down for about 5 seconds for no reason and as he casually gets to his feet NH pass and score. Zero urgency or involvement from him as they are literally breaking the door down. He was mentally checked out.

Ford in particular is an absolute p!ss take.

All the focus on defence these pundits can quickly forget that Prendergast with ball in hand was the best attacking 10 in the 6N AND Champions Cup this season, pretty sure I’d prefer that than some middle of the road player.

However while the British media have gone on a mission to try get Pollock onto the plane, they’ve also gone on a mission to ensure they get Prendergast off, we’ll find out tomorrow just how influential they truly are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,040 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

There'll always be parochialism when it comes to Lions selections. Monye, Youngs etc were singing the praises of Prendergast not too long ago, but now that there's a sign of weakness they'll advocate for an Englishman to take his place instead.

I can see the benefit of George Ford going. He's a steady presence who'll put his side in the right areas if the pitch. Would much rather him than Marcus Smith which I find to be a baffling call.

Can't see more than 12 Irish travelling in a 38 man squad.

We don't have enough versatility in our back line for then to be selected ahead of others in those last place picks.

    My Irish tourists are:

Sheahan, porter, furlong, beirne, McCarty, JVDF, Conan, JGP, aki, ringrose, lowe and Keenan.

Possibly Doris, but I don't expect him to make it after the surgery.

Can't see a reserve center spot going to henshaw ahead of more versatile, but perhaps lesser centers, such as Jordan or Daly.

Similarly I can't see Hansen travelling, and as much as he's been talked about on here, I can't see Casey being ahead of Ben White if there's a 4th SH brought. It will be JGP, Mitchell and Williams.

They've had some nice jerseys in the past, but just not a fan of that current one…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,824 ✭✭✭snotboogie

I think Kelleher and Prendergast go too. Baird and Henshaw have a really good shot. If Hansen or Doris have any prospect of being fit they'll go too.

Anything more than 12 would be a very good return. I'd put Kelleher, Ryan, Prendergast and Crowley as possibles too but equally none of them might go.

It will be interesting to see if guys with injuy clouds like Doris, Tuipolotu and Feyi-Waboso get a call-up.

Hearing rumours of a 42 man squad, which is big and would certainly allow for those borderline players to be named.

    My take for Irish lads:

Porter, Sheehan, Kelleher, Bealham, McCarthy 😑, Ryan, VdF, Baird, Conan, JGP, Prendergast, Aki, Ringrose, Keenan, Osborne.

    Edit: Beirne obviously 🤦

Personally don't see Prendergast, Osborne or Baird making it tbh.

Potentially first Lions tour for Ryan and VdF tho which is mad.

picking people on versatility when there are that many options and you arent taking a boat to go on tour is a mistake

Take a bigger squad, if theres an injury, fly in the next best person, they will only be 3rd or 4th choice anyway

Keep the style of play simple thats when it works best, you have 4 teams to choose from in a sport with maybe 8 decent teams in total, the thing the hosting team has on any lions team is cohesiveness and time to gel. If you have that many good players, you dont even need that.

The whole argentina pre game and the dates of the club seasons ending is always a mess and should be gotten rid of

Prendergast should go for sure, had a brilliant first season, albeit on a very good team, which is what the lions should be

if it is a 40-42 man squad, i can see predergast making it for sure. and Owen Farrell. Maybe he will get a few suggestions on how to toughen up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,900 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

I can see Prendergast and a lot of the Leinster boys getting the nod with Andy Farrell in charge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,190 ✭✭✭Bogwoppit

I hope it’s not a 42 man squad, the last time they tried that it was an absolute disaster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,202 ✭✭✭✭phog

Farrell won't go with a 42 man squad, he's never had a large squad with Ireland, why would start now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 711 ✭✭✭bingobango12

Was reported yesterday that 40 will be named. Think 38 would suffice but maybe they will name a Doris and Lawrence who are injured currently in the hope they make the tests? Not sure why else 40+ would be chosen.

With an hour to go, it’s time to lock in my Lions prediction

    HK

    Dan Sheehan (Ireland)

    Ronan Kelleher (Ireland)

    Jamie George (England)

    PR

    Andrew Porter (Ireland)

    Elis Genge (England)

    Pierre Schoeman (Scotland)

    Tadgh Furlong (Ireland)

    Will Stuart (England)

    Finlay Bealham (Ireland)

    SR

    James Ryan (Ireland)

    Joe McCarthy (Ireland)

    Maro Itoje (England)

    Tadgh Beirne (Ireland)

    Ollie Chessum (England)

    BR

    Jack Willis (England)

    Jac Morgan (Wales)

    Josh van der Flier (Ireland)

    Henry Pollock (England)

    Jack Conan (Ireland)

    Taulupe Faletau (Wales)

    SH

    Jamison Gibson-Park (Ireland)

    Alex Mitchell (England)

    Ben White (Scotland)

    FH

    Finn Russell (Scotland)

    Fin Smith (England)

    Sam Prendergast (Ireland)

    CE

    Robbie Henshaw (Ireland)

    Bundee Aki (Ireland)

    Sione Tuipolotu (Scotland)

    Huw Jones (Scotland)

    Garry Ringrose (Ireland)

    WG

    James Lowe (Ireland)

    Elliot Daly (England) *

    Tommy Freeman (England)

    Mack Hansen (Ireland)

    FB

    Hugo Keenan (Ireland)

    Blair Kinghorn (Scotland)

     * I genuinely think this is a toss up between Daly and Jamie Osborne. Osborne is the better player but Daly’s experience, especially in a position where there is no Lions experience, will edge him onto the plane.

I could also see Earl or Baird squeezing into the BR but I think there are better players who do what they can do (Beirne for Baird) & (Morgan for Earl).

Zander Fagerson and Caelan Doris would be locked in instead of Bealham & Willis if it wasn’t for injury. I could still see Fagerson going due to the fact there is a real chance he could make the final 2 tests but that seems too big a risk for a position like Tighthead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 396 ✭✭CalmaftertheGav

I can’t see Doris being named if he’s not the captain, the fact that Itoje seems to more or less confirmed as captain indicates to me that Doris is out.

I suspect they’ll name Fagerson and Tuipolotu in the hopes they’ll make the tests but will name their replacement just in case!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 396 ✭✭CalmaftertheGav

Worth noting that no player that plays in a URC/Premiership final is eligible selection for the Argentina game the following week, this might be taken into consideration for the Lions selection.
