I don't think I've seen pure passion fruit like that in supermarkets… possibly an Asian supermarket might?

Off licences have something like this but given the price making your own from fresh fruit might be cheaper:

I'm wary of the various negroni bottlings also… It's the Campari and Vermouth substitute that seems to be where they fall down.

they are so easy to make too, all you need is quality ingredients and the ability to stir

Here's a nice one without complicated ingredients… the Enzoni.

    The "correct" ingredients are:

5 muddled grapes, 30ml gin, 30 ml campari, 23ml lemon juice, 15ml simple syrup. Shaken together with ice for 20 seconds, then double strained into a glass filled with ice.

It's a lovely drink with nice colour that's supposed to convert even the biggest campari skeptics, anyway, what I do is basically increase every element by 30 or 40% while keeping the campari at 30ml and I go for maybe 6 - 8 grapes depending on their size. And I don't bother with double straining because I quite like tiny bits of grape getting in there

Lately I've only been drinking Aperol Spritz

Vieux Carre is my new fav.

Equal parts Rye whiskey, Cognac and sweet vermouth.

    A third part Benedictine

    4 dashes peychaud's and 2 dashes ango

Stir with ice and strain onto ice. Express a lemon rind over the top.

It's so complex and delish. I use Powers Rye and Hennessy.

Limoncello Spritz is also supposed to be amazing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,360 ✭✭✭limnam

Probably doesn't matter too much for a spritz but it can be difficult enough to find a good quality Limoncello here

Made a nice Old Fashioned with Powers Rye last night

    • 60mls Powers Rye
    • 10mls Rich Demerera Syrup
    • 5mls of the syrup from a jar of Luxardo Cherries
    • 2-4 dashes of Ango

Mix all the ingredients with ice in a mixing glass, and strain into an Old Fashioned glass with a large cube of ice

Garnish with an orange peel twist and a cherry.

Really wish it was as delicious at it looks. Limoncello spritze I've tried and made have all tasted v medicinal/lemsipy, if you looking for a lemon spritz I'd say try a tom Collins but with prosecco and see what tastes like

I don't know why I haven't before, but I finally got myself some Orange Bitters, and holy hell it's such an upgrade on Old Fashioneds, I made myself 3 last night, one with Powers Rye, one with Three Swallows and one with some Hennessy that was left in the end of a bottle.

Using just semi rich brown sugar syrup, orange bitters and a luxardo cherry, stirred in a mixing glass and served over a large cube. Such a different drink to using Ango, but much, much better.

I knew it would be different, but I'm an absolute convert now.

What else can I use them in I wonder.

    Any particular brand you recommend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,924 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

The off licence I was in only had the Angostura brand so I just got them.

Anyone able to recommend a good source for Maraschino cherries? Last time we had them was from a boutique in Sligo, but I'd prefer to shop somewhere a little closer to Limerick this time around!

Have you tried Cavavin on Bedford row? If you know someone with a Musgraves account they usually have them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,360 ✭✭✭limnam

this is most likely down to poor quality limoncello.

very hard to find good limoncello

I looked in Tesco for the luminous red ones, but no sign of them or anywhere else around Galway. I would prefer the Luxardo dark ones and I do have access to a Musgraves wholesale card so I will try there. Let you know.

I tried the Arthur's Quay and Coonagh stores with no luck last week. Will try Cavavin next week. I've found them in a number of good off license websites but the delivery cost is nearly the same as the cherries themselves.

Had a fantastic cocktail in my local last night. Smoky mezcal, blackberry, lime.

The blackberries were pureed with agave syrup, then strained. A really fantastic, simple combination for fans of margueritas.

I had mentioned on the whisky thread that I'd been gifted 2L of JW double black.

It's Mrs Beer's birthday tomorrow and we're having a party, so I decided I'd do smokey whisky sours - with a twist. I infused the whisky with fresh rhubarb and some ginger slices (surprisingly, the ginger didn't come through much) for a few days to make rhubarb and ginger whisky sours 😋. The infused litre of whiskey (with about 50ml of Cointreau added) is absolutely gorgeous. These are going to be great. I'll report back.

Rhubarb whisky sours were a big success! I'd highly recommend trying infusing spirits with rhubarb. It works really well and gives amazing colour, as a bonus. The flavor is much brighter and fresher than making a rhubarb syrup.

Anyone any nice gin cocktails? Quite enjoy a G&T with bitters whilst making dinner but have also started making the odd negroni or gin sour/gimlet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,140 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

I'm afraid gin doesn't agree with me but I do know a good gin quote which you may or may not agree with :)

“We sat in a corner of the bar at Victor’s and drank gimlets. ‘They don’t know how to make them here,’ he said. ‘What they call a gimlet is just some lime or lemon juice and gin with a dash of sugar and bitters. A real gimlet is half gin and half Rose’s Lime Juice and nothing else. It beats martinis hollow.'”

I've not seen Rose's in years! It's very sweet though, don't think i'd enjoy it mixed solely with gin.
