I assume this is a weed, but just checking before removing it. It has appeared in the last week in a raised bed.

Looks a bit like a fuchsia, but I am not convinced by the leaf groupings.

    100% fushia ;-)

Those triple buds are always the best choice for cuttings. Some plants have two buds at each node some three and some a mix. You get better branching with the three buds at each node.

Thanks - it may well be fuschia. The raised bed is a few feet from where a massively overgrown fuschia was removed last year (see below). I was sorry to lose the fuschia, but it was in the way. It would be nice to be able to revive it now in a pot maybe. Should I try pull it up and pot it, or take a cutting?

Carefully dig it up. Cut it down by half when you put it up and use the bit you cut off for a cutting.

I think its a hazel, alder is very similar but i think its hazel.

Seen leaves like that before that was an Alder tree. Are there any big trees nearby?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,278 ✭✭✭The Continental Op

I's tend to go with Hazel over Alder. If only that main leaf wasn't damaged I'd be more confident.

What is this plant please? Seems to have vigorous and long lasting flowers on the roadsides so I want to get it going in my wild verges (unless its an invasive):

red valerian i think. native wildflower.

No big trees near us. I threw a wildflower seed mix in there last year so presumed it was something to do with that at first but it does seem to be some type of tree. Any harm in leaving it? These other things

    are popping up

Sorry these other things are popping up around it which I hope are from the wildflower mix

I think they look like Yarrow (Achillea) which have nice flowers.

Trees tend to get fairly big with time so if you don't have the space for them it is easier to dig them out when they are younger.

    Happy gardening!

Thanks yeah I'll get rid of the tree now so cause my garden is tiny!

    Hydrangea?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,938 ✭✭✭10-10-20

    Is it a Guelder Rose?

Actually, scrap my hydrangea idea. I'd say you're right.

The maple-like leaves make me think it is. Plus I had been looking at native Irish hedging plants recently, and this one is common as such.

Chaenomeles for me, probably 'crimson 'n' gold'. I've been admiring them anywhere I've seen as they've been great this year, as has pretty much everything. An underrated plant.

You're on the money, I'd say. I just downloaded that pic and increased the brightness. Here it is.

Hi, I'm not sure if I am in the right thread. I have a lawn issue and I'd like some advice. We bought a house about 5 years ago. The problem is that it has yellow grass at the front (pic attached). Is this from the type of seed that was planted? There is a significant amount of it. How do I deal with it?

If you take a rake to it - you can get special ones for thatching grass but any rake will do really, and scrape it to remove all that dead stuff. Then feed it.
