Wildlife act prohibits it from March to August.

But there are some exceptions - including for reasons of safety. If your trees fall under this category you can take them down.

    Also:

trees within 30 meters of a building (excluding walls or temporary structures) do not require a felling license, unless the building was built after the tree.

Are they completely dead or just suffering OP? A suffering tree is a good way off being dangerous and may recover, I don't like to see trees being cut down on an off chance or being preventive.

But as above, if they 'pose' a danger they can be cut anytime.

I imagine a felling license falls under a different category to the Wildlife Act ie. It would apply year round, and there wouldn't be too many buildings built before an old tree.

Please make sure no nests if decide to cut now though. You don't want baby birds starving to death if they didn't die when the nest hit the ground.

It would be pretty easy to see a nest in an ash tree any time, with Ash Die Back there should not be any problem at all.
