Local elections can rely more on grass root activism. After getting wiped out in the 2011 general election I think Fianna Fail won the most council seats. It was very much business as usual for at the parish pump.

There probably is a more significant shift at grassroots level in the UK, but I don't know if the success of Reform will just dilute the right wing vote again at the next election.

Leaving aside the ridiculousness of idea of Canada ever joining the USA for a moment, it is almost three times the size of the USA in area. Below the ignorance of the idea, there's also a distinct layer of insult and dismissiveness to say that Canada would only be one state. It would be at least ten, based on the current provincial map of Canada. Population wouldn't come into it - Wyoming is its own state, despite less than a million people living there. It'd be like Nigel Farage suggesting that Ireland should become a county of England.

And to make it all even more distasteful to Canadians, making it the 51st state would abolish any provincial autonomy in law that Canadians currently enjoy and would therefore mean that people in Saskatchewan would have to have all the same local laws as those in Quebec. Unworkable, in other words.

It just further underlines what we already knew. It's all something Trump says to demean, distract and intimidate.

Or Trump's lizard brain tells him Canada may as well be part of the USA. it would chime with his MAGA rants, making America bigger again.

Invading Ukraine was never going to do anything to arrest Russia's demographic and economic decline but it was the most convenient thing to do to hold together a populist regime with no answers.

When the tariffs really hit home I won't be surprised if MAGA militias start preparing an invasion force.

Eli Lilly are spending $1bn expanding in Limerick. So much for American pharma companies going home. The Trumpster wont be happy when he hears that news.

And the right has nothing besides hate, racism and fascism. It's politics for hateful troglodytes who are anti democracy, equality, education or any kind of progress.

I roundly reject this notion of "it's all the fault of those people who dare to want to live in a functioning democracy". People didn't reject liberal values, they embraced fascism because of hate, stupidity and racism.

So you can stick your "critique" of whatever you see as "the left"

And you know why that is true?

Because we live in a world where people can use the N word and get $500k as reward.

    Racist MAGA dirt bags.

No surprise, same fundraising site raised millions for that murderer Rittenhouse.

All planned long before Trump second term. I would watch for any new large scale investment from this point on as an indicator. I work in that industry and nobody is spending anything beyond long planned infrastructure.

What a truly bizarre thing for a leader of a country, any country, to post.

There really is something deeply, deeply, wrong with him. It's scary to think that this guy has access to the largest arsenal in the world.

Unfortunately that's how the right wing view running a country. To the modern right a country is just an economy and its people are just consumers. A functioning social fabric means nothing to them.

An interesting piece from back in March explaining how interest in an escape route from the USA is becoming common

Eric Major, the CEO of the immigration-advising firm Latitude, began his career helping rich Hong Kongers make exit plans to relocate to Canada or the United Kingdom ahead of the territory’s scheduled handover to China. Major went on to work mainly with clients from China, Russia, India, and the Middle East.

Today most of Major’s clients are American. Volek’s firm has more clients from America than from the next four biggest feeder countries (Pakistan, Nigeria, India, and the U.K.) combined. Fifteen years ago, the firm did not see much point in opening a U.S. office. This year, it’s launching its tenth. “I never would have imagined my No. 1 source market would become America,” Major told me. “But now the top brass of America is hedging.”

This bit is stark and reminded me of how super catholic some of my US relatives. Some of them would be fine with Trump as pope.

The couple had been looking forward to their homecoming, but it quickly became clear that the U.S. they’d left was not the same country that was waiting for them. Hsiao felt unsafe as an Asian woman, particularly when she went out wearing a mask. Carter’s family was divided along political lines. Even their church felt like a minefield. “We were hopeful until November,” Carter recalled. “But after I saw how many people voted for Trump, after the first term, after January 6—and people of faith in the church embracing Christian nationalism …”

“The Christianity that somehow has morphed in this country is not our expression of faith,” Hsiao interjected.

You are right. I was being a bit of a smart arse. It's good to see that investment though.

Spotted this on Reddit and had a good laugh. Trump truly does have the poorly educated under his spell, doesn't he.

The average price of a house in America. Is 300k plus tariffs will increase the cost of most consumer products. The fall in the value of the dollar will have many negative side effects the dollar for 200 hundred years has been the safe haven for international trade and investors this no longer true

Trump is offering a 5k tax credit to new parents who gave a child while doge destroys the federal agencys that provide provide help to family's and children and cutting back on Medicaid that provides services to 75million people there are 500 billion cuts planned. For government services and medicare so that they can give more tax cuts to the rich

These cuts will effect everyone but the top 20per cent as there will be cuts in education scientific research and agencys that run public infrastructure like national parks and road maintenance schools will have less funds to provide scholarships. Harvard is losing 3,billion in research grants

Universitys will face a choice lose all government grants or agee to a long list of rules that cut back on the right to protest by students and the right to free speech

America is becoming a laughing stock as trump attacks free speech and seems to change his mind weekly as to his policy's on trade tariffs

Trump seems to want to destroy the things that make America great free speech and government services that make it a good place to live for ordinary people Right wing conservative judges are reducing women's rights including the right to get an abortion

A lot of poorly educated people do like Trump, I presume, but you'll also find that many people who've graduated high school, can read & write, hold down jobs, have a 3rd level qualification also support him. If you just slap a badge of 'poorly educated' on whoever likes Trump, then I don't think the psychology of MAGA is being fully explored.

I think there's quite a bit more to it in terms of the materialism, the tendency towards fervour and the brashness that exists in American culture. It doesn't matter how much education you have if your ego allows you to get locked into a particular idea and the resulting myopia shuts out basic common sense. Plenty of people with decent educations have got sucked into Scientology and plenty more have been sucked into MAGA. In both cases its a cult mentality.

It's more like there's a group of tweens who were playing a SIM game called 'The White House' than the actual administration.

He doesn't seem to have much problem with the comparatively recent artificial line separating the US and Mexico. Funny that

Kathy Hochul (Democractic - Governor of New York) has come out with the below tweet today:

    https://x.com/GovKathyHochul/status/1918785556810469770

However she has also received funding from EMILYs List  a left-leaning American political action committee (PAC) that aims to help elect Democratic female candidates in favor of abortion rights to office.

So having a joke about being the pope is offensive to Catholics but advocating for abortion isn't.

It appears for someone who claims to be a catholic she doesn't really follow the rules of it very closely.

This is the sort of bullshit that doesn't help the democrats pathetic posturing about a non issue that can be seen right through, there's loads of thing you can criticize Trump for this Pope picture isn't one of them.
