A really “poppy” start to the day musically today with Pink, Samantha Mumba, and Ryan regular Benson Boone amongst others. A bit too commercial for my taste tbh.

Artistic Director of the “Theater of War” (note American spelling) in now which prompted a brief discussion on the “correct” (quote) spelling of words - UK v US. The American guest insisted the British spelling was correct, despite his employer using the American version. Awkward moment for Ryan when he had to explain he had a somewhat difficult relationship with “the Empire” - that’ll really endear you to a British audience…..

Connemara got a mention too for good measure.

    Here is a crossword clue:

    A number in the theatre/theater.

The answer has 11 letters in our English spelling. 10 letters in American English spelling.

Ryan is playing too much American music. It is one of the sources of the pollution of our language.

Ryan starting the show with Guns ‘n’ Roses, I can say with almost absolute certainty they never got an airing on his RTÉ show. The track in question is “Paradise City”, with its chorus including the line “Take me home” - subliminal messaging perhaps?

I think you're reading too much into that. Equally "paradise city" for him could well be London and "take me home" could well be an acknowledgement that having become a titan of UK radio London is now his home.

Angela Scanlon in for Ryan, I’ll only be in for a part of the first hour, but it’s not a great start. We had a period of dead air after the GNR track - it was as if she didn’t realise it was her time to talk…….hmmmm.

True, I hadn’t considered how much he is tearing up the radio scene in London and the wider UK. I would imagine there will be lots of disappointed listeners today in his absence.

Tubs was broadcasting from Dublin yesterday. His accent and language have completely changed since moving to London. Speaking pidgin Hiberno-Cockney English now. She has Chris Evans in the studio with her now. He never joins Tubs in the studio.

Go easy on her, she's probably just overwhelmed to be in that chair this morning.

Yes that’s a very astute observation. I wonder why that hasn’t happened yet? You’d think two titans (thanks to yagan for the appropriate descriptor) of UK and Irish broadcasting would be eager to leverage each other’s brand to their own audiences?

Two big egos who both want to dominate the room. Remember when Ryan was over in London two summers ago and they both tried to outdo each other with tales of style and debauchery. It was brilliant radio but you can't have them both operating out of the same studio. Don't think that Evans is willing to put himself at the mercy of Ryan.

When you're at the top table one must still adhere to table manners. The rest can grovel.

Angela seems fascinated by the Bank Holiday Weekend. The Evans chat aside, it’s all she’s talked about in a “what are you doing this Bank Holiday Weekend? Text the show now!” way. Once or twice would be fine, but it’s in every talk segment.

RDS completely all over the place again today btw.

Can someone please make a case for a return to RTÉ Radio for Ryan Tubridy..

Let him work his way back slowly - stand in for Shay in the morning- Louise at Lunchtime - and a tryout on Late Date…the guy is more talented than many who are still on air…

Listening to him on Virgin - he sounds uninterested - just going through the motions…..

When you think about it - was he just badly advised when he was given back his morning and should stayed silent?

    No thanks

Leave him to.rot in London where there is no safety net to cover his mediocrity

I wish Ryan all the best in London but I am glad the licence payer doesn't have to pick up the tab anymore.

I'm sure he has powerful friends who can make that case for him.

In my opinion, he has done his broadcasting reputation a lot of damage thanks to his stint in London. Without the safety net of a large production crew, he has been found out as a mediocre broadcaster. There's no shortage of anecdotes on this thread about him speaking too fast and making basic mistakes in the studio. He has made no impact whatsoever in the UK despite his glittering CV. Why is that, do you think?

His sounding uninterested and going through the motions in his current job smacks of entitlement. Unlike most people who are presenters on RTE, he didn't have to make his way up through the ranks to get to where he was. The jobs were more or less handed to him. He was in a fairly unique position in his old job in RTE - he was insulated from the instability that's part and parcel of his industry. If you scan the listings of smaller radio stations around Ireland, there's a good chance you'll recognise some of the presenters. They're people who used to be on RTE or Today FM or Newstalk back in the day but now they're plying their trade on smaller stations. Yet they're professional enough to do a good job and to sound like they're happy to be there.

We may never find out why Tubridy made that ill-advised statement that led to his ejection from RTE. My personal opinion is that he went on a solo run, not appreciating what a lifeline he had been handed. If he wants to come back to Ireland, RTE isn't the only game in town. Perhaps we'll see Today FM and Newstalk vying for his signature…

He's too big for rte now.

That horse has bolted. Look at his majestic ascendency into the lofty English uplands and just accept that our loss is their gain.

He sounds like he's uninterested at Virgin and goingthrough the motions?

Same as he sounded at rte for the last 10yrs or more.

It might be good for the Radio Forum. We used to get a minute by minute commentary when he was on RTE, similar to the Live Line. Even now there is more interest in him than the new 9 am on RTE. Probably only Joe Duffy has a more powerful hold over the forum.

I think a lot of the posts on the RTE show were coming from posters like me. People who forgot to change the channel after Morning Ireland.

Change the Duffsters slot around so that it no longer follows The News At One. It would probably be the same for his show.

No danger of listeners forgetting to switch off before Ray.

    • News at One has 307,000 listeners (+5,000 BoB).
    • Liveline with Joe Duffy has a listenership of 314,000 (+7,000 BoB/ +11,000 YoY).
    • The Ray D'Arcy Show weekday afternoons on RTÉ Radio 1 has 194,000 listeners (+6,000 BoB/ +8,000 YoY).

Not really moved on, have we Ryan?

This is not the way to weasel your way back into RTE when sll the fuss has died down 🙂

MOD NOTE: This thread is for discussion of Ryan’s show, not the RTÉ controversies. This has been mentioned before so warnings and bans will apply from here on

Come on folks, Ryan is too big for rte now. Besides he'd miss Greggs.

    Move on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,093 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

Not true. I read a large portion of it “for research purposes” on a flight to Tokyo some time back (yes, I was that bored), and it was largely posts from a departed poster giving updates on Ryan’s opening monologue. There were even full weeks when that poster was the only poster to even comment in the thread. It would occasionally pick up when something of note would happen but it was not remotely comparable to the activity levels on the Liveline thread - indeed even a quiet day on the Liveline Thread would surpass a busy week on the Tubridy thread in terms of post count.

Just in. Ryan went to the wrong airport yesterday for his trip back to London Town; he went to Knock for his flight from Shannon. He’s gone off on a weird monologue now that said nothing of any substance and went in a myriad of directions without arriving at any destination. He sounds very distracted.
