Missing the last leg of a flight...

…what's the worst that can happen?

Dublin to Nairobi return with Lufthansa.

DUB - FRA - NBO on the way out. The return leg is NBO - BRU - FRA - DUB with Brussels Airlines/Lufthansa. I was thinking of getting a cheap Ryanair flight from Brussels to Dublin, to save me the hassle of the extra flight. Can I request my bags not to go all the way through on a 3 leg flight? I seem to remember an airline a while back (possibly Lufthansa) suing a customer who skipped the last leg.

You can't request that your bags only go part way. When you check in they'll send them the whole way.

At that point if you fail to board a connecting flight you'll cause considerable hassle as your bag will need to be offloaded.

Regardless, even with the extra flight I'm really not sure why anyone would subject themselves to Ryanair when they've a confirmed Lufthansa booking that they've already paid for. To each their own I guess 😀

My guess is it's a single booking.

Bags will be routed to Dublin.

If you don't take the last 2 legs your bags will be unloaded from the aircraft and held.

You could arouse suspicions too and be asked questions.

For the sake of 3 hours or so, best not to change

Just to clear things up, I haven’t booked, but this is an option that came up. With the bags going all the way through, I wouldn’t purposely miss the flight and cause chaos for everyone else.
Why would I consider it? The thoughts of flying to Brussels and then back to Frankfurt just to get a flight to Dublin is psychologically off putting :)

Not worth the hassle of changing nor trying to circumvent. Just enjoy a nice beer in BRU or FRA and then fly back to DUB.

Why not end your itinerary in Brussels and then just do a completely separate booking to get home ? Or is it round trip from Dublin?

Exactly. Just book two one way flights, Dub NBU and NBU BRU. Then book BRU DUB.

One way flights or stopping in Brussels brings the price up a bit, to make it not really worthwhile. It’s on a par with a round trip with KLM via Amsterdam. The two stop in the original post is a lot cheaper.

This is called short checking and is often facilitated by some airlines but perhaps not by all. It’s essentially the check in desk at NBO which will decide based on LH instructions and their own preferences.
