How to use the absolutely rock hard green avocados in supermarkets?

They're like lumps of green granite.

Any time I bought them, by the time they were nice and soft they had those stringy things inside and were black and rotten.

How the feck do I "do" these avocados?

I know you can buy more ripe ones, but they're more expensive.

    Please share tips and tricks.

I rarely buy avocados and I gave up buying the rock hard ones as I ended up either throwing them because when one ripens the others go manky, so I spend the extra for one or two ripe ones. I'd be interested in other options though.

Always buy them a few days before you plan on eating them (3-4days prior).

Similar to a pear- feel them for a slight softness (too soft = black inside) & make sure there are no bruised parts (small pockets of gooeyness).

I only ever get the large single Avacados in Tesco @ €1.59 each, because I rarely have an issue with those.

They have a 2pk "ready ripe" smaller Avacados but I found them to be be hit or miss.

(If ever they have Avacados on offer, I won't get them anymore because I've had too many crap ones)

Aldi's Avacados are a solid no no. I don't think I've ever had a good one from them!

Sometimes I have no choice but to use the rock hard ones.

Peel and remove the stone. Slice the avocado into a jug/high sided bowl, together with salt, pepper and some lemon juice. Get a hand blender and blitz it to mush.

You need to put them in a paper bag with bananas to help them ripen, but there’s still generally about a four-second usable window between rock hard and sludge. I

Buy them before you need them, then keep an eye on them and give them a gentle feel daily to check if they're ripe. As soon as they are, either use them or refrigerate them or freeze the flesh.

Are the rock hard ones which don't ripen properly just fruit that has been picked when too unripe?

I know they have to be picked unripe or they will go off too soon on the shop shelves but I know that, for example green tomatoes (loads at the end of the season in the garden) may never ripen into anything decent and many will just rot before they even turn red.(you can make decent jam with them)
