Graham Walker and Richie in Vector will give you a better price for your car than Tesla.

Albeit not as good as selling private, but they're taking away the hassle and pain for you so that's worth a lot.

I think you have worked it out for yourself. If you want the convenience of holding onto your own car until delivery of new, avoid hassle of selling privately with "tyre kickers" that option is there from Tesla but comes at a price ( a deal breaker for you) . Selling your car privately will likely yield a better price but has the downside of perhaps not being able to get timing right . It appears as though you like the "set menu price" of new car from Tesla but want to dine "a la carte". It really comes down to personal choice and everything has a price.

In terms of trade in values from Tesla these are always "low ball" because of their business model. Essentially they pass your details to the trade and solicit offers (buyer has to make a cut, offer warranty, Tesla have a cut and it is an offer sight unseen…helps understand why it is considered low). So its best to accept that in terms of managing expectations, wishing it was different unfortunately wont change things.

Not necessarily. It depends if they have a forecourt. Going for the same brand as my current car is an option. They'd sell it on the forecourt for sure because it's a high spec model. Therein lies my problem really. I need a person to look at it and see that it's not a bog standard paddy spec and deserves more than a bog standard trade in. I'm not looking for private sale equivalent, I know you get less for a trade in. But Tesla are taking he Absolute piss. 10k of piss.

I'm looking to trade in a diesel skoda for a Tesla. The other option is to get an Enyaq or ID4. I'm fairly certain an old fashioned approach of a car expert taking a look at the car and taking it for a quick spin would increase the value over some comparison Web site that assumes its a base paddy spec that's in rag order.

I'm really talking myself out of a Tesla aren't I?! 😆

I Guess I've answered my question. I'll look elsewhere for my new car.

The car is for me, but I'm finding it difficult to see past this problem. I thought I was missing a trick, hence coming to forums to find out.

I think it's probably a generational thing. There's a generation now thst don't realise there's another way of doing things that is fairer, especially if you have well cared for car or well spec'ed car.

I've also just discovered another stumbling block. I would add the advanced autopilot add-on. I've found out this is tied to the car and is not transferable. OK, I can live with that. But it gets worse, they disable the add-on on their trade ins. So when it comes to upgrading the car and doing a trade.in, it adds nothing to the trade in value AND you have to purchase the add-on again on your new car.

In other words it's a 3,800 recurring fee that cannot be recoup on a trade in. If you.trade in every 3 or 4 years, that's roughly a €1,000 annual subscription fee in disguise.

The moral of the story is the best way to buy a brand new car is to go for the base paddy spec and don't bother putting any effort into caring for your car because it's.poinless in the end. It's quite sad really, for someone who loves cars and loves caring for his car.

It's actually fairer having the Tesla option. No more having a sales person blow smoke up your arse about how good a 'deal' you're getting on the trade in. If you want to get the best deal, you put in the leg work and sell the car privately. If want convenience let dealer do the leg work and trade in. I've done both. I've sold a VW brand car privately when trading in against a newer model in the same garage because it was financially a better option for me. Tesla choose to give buyers great value on new cars. They choose not to get involved in the 2nd hand market and focus on running a lean, efficient operation. That is their prerogative and there is nothing unfair about it. But I agree, it's not for everyone.
