Leah Larkin, who blogs as The DNA Geek, periodically releases an update of a post about how many tests are in different places, etc.

Apparently 53m people in the databasese now.

Thank you for that and for the link. Now I know why FamilyTreeDNA has been next to useless for me.

There were some quite interesting comments when she posted it on Facebook. I posted one below but others noted that they don't have a subscription model and records like Ancestry or MyHeritage.

I did a big Y700 test on familytreedna, some interesting information but probably not worth the cost. I got no 700 marker matches. I found interesting is that I thought my surname origins are from Co. Meath but all my 111 marker matches surnames are from north Connacht where I live. It has my haplogroup split estimated around 1250ad. It has previous haplogroups splits and estimates times. I'm a subgroup of R-m222 which is quite common here. I put my DNA on GEDMATCH too which helped confirm my only non northwest of Ireland ancestry line from my 4xG grandparents. I haven't invested enough time on understanding dna to make full use of that site. Ancestry is probably the best site because of their data base to tracing different branches in your family tree

Every bigY test will ultimately add to what we know though. My brother only has one match at that level but it's too far back to figure out.
