4 wins for the SA sides this weekend....they mean business now....

Sharks looked really good there when they got going. Thought Ulster were quite decent again just got overpowered in the second half.

The four SA teams will be at home against Welsh opposition in round 17 and 18 so expect the SA teams to rack up points.

Unfortunately our three struggling provinces will be battling it out, Munster v Ulster and Connacht v Edinburgh.

Then Munster v Benetton, Edinburgh v Ulster and Zebre v Connacht.

It’s all getting very dicey now.

4 Irish sides lost this round...when was the last time that happened?!

My top 8 prediction after that round:

    Leinster 76

    Bulls 68

    Sharks 63

    Glasgow 62

    Stormers 56

    Benetton 50

    Ulster 47

    Cardiff 47

These are the teams from 4th to 14th who can still make the top 8 and their remaining games.

I think Munster will make it, but I don't see Ulster or Connacht making it. Wins for the teams above Connacht will mean even if they get 10 points they won't make it. And I don't see Ulster winning their two away games.

    Cardiff 46pts - Bulls (a), Stormers (a)

    Stormers 45pts - Dragons (h), Cardiff (h)

    Scarlets 43pts - Lions (a), Sharks (a)

    Benetton 41pts - Glasgow (h), Munster (a)

    Munster 41pts - Ulster (h), Benetton (h)

    Edinburgh 39pts - Connacht (a), Ulster (h)

    Ospreys 38pts - Sharks (a), Lions (a)

    Ulster 38pts - Munster (a), Edinburgh (a)

    Lions 35pts - Scarlets (h), Ospreys (h)

    Connacht 35pts - Edinburgh (h), Zebre (a)

There are too many possibilities to be too confident but if results go to home advantage Munster should sneak into the playoffs hopefully.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,070 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

There's no should or sneak if Munster win their 2 remaining games. They will qualify handily in 6th place IMO if they win both. Cardiff are unlikely to pick up many more points. Scarlets might beat Lions, but they're not beating the Sharks. I don't see Benetton beating Glasgow or Munster.

5 Stormers, 6 Munster, 7 Edinburgh, 8 Cardiff is my prediction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,567 ✭✭✭niallm77

Benetton have Glasgow at home, Glasgow are ravaged by injuries to half their starting XV. It's very possible Benetton beat them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,164 ✭✭✭Jump_In_Jack

And Glasgow have secured a playoff spot and a win would only help towards home advantage in the semi-final while Benetton are fighting for qualification, so expect Benetton to be the more motivated team, which should make it a 50/50 match considering Glasgow are better generally but Benetton at home and must-win scenario, Benetton could win that alright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,164 ✭✭✭Jump_In_Jack

The sneak part I meant it will be touch and go for each of the two matches, other results could go against them as well, mathematically possible for Edinburgh, Scarlets, Cardiff to finish on 49 or more so bonus points, wins and points difference could play a part.

I’m far from confident we will beat Ulster, let alone Benetton as well, so we will be doing very well to finish 6th, fingers crossed it’d mean a quarter-final away to Glasgow and not the Bulls.

It’s exciting nonetheless, can’t wait for Friday week!

It essentially all boils down to the Ulster game I think.

They'll be absolutely sick about that Sharks result. Had they won that they would have been coming in on a high. I'd pretty heavily favour Munster now though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 725 ✭✭✭bingobango12

The break week is probably coming at a good time for Munster but if both teams continue to play the same way they have the last couple of weeks I can’t see anything but an Ulster win. Munster need to fix their lineout or they will find it very tough to win any sort of game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Remember that Ulster will also have a break but then home advantage will favour Munster I think. Watching how clinical Ulster were in the first half V Sharks and contrasting it to their second half performance I'd say going in losing at half time wouldn't be the end of the world either for Munster.

Looking at the fixtures remaining, taking into account log position and home/away teams, this is my prediction for the top 8:

    Leinster ±75

    Bulls ±66

    Glasgow ±63

    Sharks ±61

    Stormers ±53

    Munster ±49

    Scarlets ±47

    Edinburgh ±47

Cardiff ±46 (could squeek in depending on bonus points and other results going differently than expected)

    Quarter Finals

    Leinster vs Edinburgh

    Bulls vs Scarlets

    Glasgow vs Munster

    Sharks vs Stormers

    Semi Finals

    Leinster vs Stormers

    Bulls vs Glasgow

    Final

Leinster vs Bulls (would love Stormers to make it though, so would the Bulls and Glasgow obviously.)

    Round 17. Nearly there.

    Today

6pm Sharks v Ospreys BBC Two Wales Prem 2

    7:35pm Munster v Ulster RTE2 Prem 1

    Saturday (5:15pm unless stated)

    3pm Bulls v Cardiff S4C Prem 2

    Stormers v Dragons S4C

    Leinster v Zebre RTE2 Prem 1

    Treviso v Glasgow Prem 2

    7:35pm Connacht v Edinburgh TG4 Prem 1

    Sunday 2pm

    Lions v Scarlets S4C Prem 2

Leinster should clinch the No 1 seed and home advantage through the playoffs with a routine win against Zebre (or less likely if both Glasgow and Bulls fail to win).

Glasgow and Bulls have both already clinched Top 4 and and will want wins to take their battle for No 2 seed and home advantage in at least the QFs and SFs to the final day.

Sharks clinch top 4 with a win.

Cardiff and Stormers will want wins to keep outside chances of Top 4 if Sharks slip up this evening.

Beyond that no one is locked in, with everyone down as far as No 14 Connacht still mathematically in a chance of making the playoffs, but this weekend will likely rule a lot of those teams out.

After a very disappointing round 16, what are the chances now:
    Round 17,
Leinster at home to Zebre, an almost certain win will put them clear at the top, with their final round opponent to be Glasgow in Dublin, could probably give all the starters a rest for that one.
Munster in 9th on 41 pts, a win would hopefully push them up a place or two, a bonus point win could leap them up to 6th (Expecting Stormers to smash Dragons so they should be out of reach in 5th).
Ulster in 12th could jump up a few places and possibly make 8th if other results are favourable.
Connacht would need a very unlikely set of results to qualify now, but a bonus point win might keep the possibility alive.

Munster V Ulster tonight at will come down to the basics, passing the ball backwards, scrum, lineout etc. if Munster get them right they will win, otherwise it's Ulsters game.

The winner will be well fired up and will likely go on to win their next game and secure a top 8 finish and Champions Cup next year.

This evenings game is too close to call, before we got our asses handed to us by Glasgow in Thomond I'd have said the home advantage would get us over the line

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 725 ✭✭✭bingobango12

Looking forward to Munster Ulster tonight. Should be a good one with probably both teams strongest 23s of the season named. Really like Ulsters 11-15 but Munsters half backs are a good bit superior imo. If Munster sort their line out I reckon they win by a score, Ulster to win if not.

Connacht can do the winner of Munster v Ulster tonight a big favour by beating Edinburgh tomorrow. I don't know if 2 wins from the last 2 games will be enough for Connacht but not letting Edinburgh win tomorrow should help get at least 1 of Munster or Ulster into the last 8.

It's been a long time since we only had 1 team in the Heineken Cup.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,070 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

Even with 10 points from their last two games, one win from the last two rounds from Munster, Benetton and Scarlets would put top 8 beyond Connacht.

It is a long shot but it's not impossible that 2 of those 3 teams will lose their last 2 games. Scarlets are away in SA and Benetton play Glasgow and then Munster.
