Really don't like the direction the new bmw are going with the Dashboard. Seats and steeringwheel look spot on as usual but the single long screen just doesn't look right for me.

General consensus is the whole car seems to be a downgrade in terms of quality from the old shape.
A 2024 i5 or 530e for €50K in 12 months time though would be very tempting though.

have to say I’m delighted with the economy of this car- got my first electric bill last week and it’s was by no means excessive (just over €300 for what are winter months and charging the car regularly). Driving up the country got me from the far side of Kilkenny to between Tyrellspass and Mullingar on a single charge run in a busy evening traffic. You definitely get the best economy on longer runs like this as the car is up to full speed and temperature and probably saving a bit of charge from regeneration. To be honest it’s working out far more economical than previous diesel 3 series I was driving. I’ve only put petrol in three times since January despite doing lots of long spins mixed in

    You seem surprised.

I am to be honest , I didn’t think I could get over 100km range from the battery and it seems very possible. I did have it in efficient mode but was driving normally and not sparing it

    Outside my door right now is a 2015 535d, 2017 530e, 2019 520d and a 2023 520d MHEV.

The 2015 is the best built, ignoring the engine. It’s rock solid. The 530e is the best spec but has given the most trouble! The 2019 is plain, relatively base spec MSport (all are MSport) but the 2023 has some cool features buts cheap inside. Feels like the accountants designed the materials.

Why do you have all the 5 series Gumbo?

They're not all taxis are they?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,155 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

    1 was, 1 is.
    The rest are private.

I’ve had more BMW’s than hot dinners, still a bmw fanboy to some extent. Currently chasing an M140i and current favourite car is an M2.

Silly hobbies and all that 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭maddness

I’ve had a couple of M140i’s and both model of M2’s. Best cars bmw have made in the past 10 years. The M2 is way ahead of a M140i but the M140i is incredible value for what you get. I’ll definitely get another at some stage.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,155 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

Love the M2 but budget not there for one at the moment. I’ll have to wait a bit 😭

My mate has 2018 M140i which triggered the interest there’s a few on DD at the moment that are appealing.

On another note, 535d sold today.

Resurrecting this thread to see if anyone any things to look out for in a G20 330e. Had been looking at EVs as our second car but came across these which have caught my eye, a case of heart overruling head really.

Looking at M sports, spec seems the same in 2019/20/21 years bar the odd one having the m performance pack which I'm not mad on, all the ones I've went to look at were UK imports, some had patchy service history but seemed relatively in line with the intervals I saw online. Anything particular I should be looking out for aside from that?

I'm aware the battery is tiny but our last family car was a 231 Tiguan PHEV that only did 30kms during winter but most of my trips are much less than that.

Mrs.Milltown had a '182 330 for a bit. The ride quality on her m-sport was harsh I thought. She suffers a bit with her back so the ride quality and getting in and out of the sports seats meant it was changed for an X1. The 330e never gave any trouble, only cost was service and brake fluid. Hers was a UK import originally. Surprisingly, it had a mechanical handbrake lever and an analogue MPH speedo. Can't imagine they continued much longer!

While shopping for hers, the most striking thing for me was the difference in tyre noise from one car to another. Proper tyres too. Not Triangles vs. Pirellis. The ride must make them sensitive to it.

    NFTs funged. No questions asked.

Only advice is to make sure you go for the larger battery version - 192 reg or better (Later 192) - 12kw/hr capacity vs 9kw/hr.

The cars with the larger battery have the updated Speedo etc. as a quick way to check when looking at online ads

The older dash looks like this

The newer dash looks like this

Thanks for that, all the ones I've viewed are the newer dash. I think the older model might be the previous generation F20? Had been looking at them too but just nowhere near as modern or nice as the G20 IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,493 ✭✭✭Ivefoundgod

Thanks for that. I test drove the M sports and didn't find it too bad anyway nor did I notice any particular noise from the tyres. May be due to the newer versions I was in, all were 2020/21s.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,879 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

It would still be the G20 model since mid 2017 but it got a mild interior facelift in 2019, the 530e getting a larger battery too.

The cabin refinement of the G20 5 Series is light years ahead of a 2018 F30 3 Series so your not going to hear much in the way of tyre noise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 436 ✭✭GPoint

No amount of insulation will help with tyre noise on rough surface at motorway speeds. But yes it’s a lot better than f30.

Replace tyres with non run flat with a lowest dB you can find and you will improve comfort even more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,493 ✭✭✭Ivefoundgod

Anything I've seen online has G20 from 2019? Prior model F30 from 2014-2019, exterior of both looks substantially different too rather than a facelift. I might have confused things referencing F20s though. This is the model I've been looking at anyway; https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-3-series-330e-m-sport-290bhp/39581769

Haven't really considered 5 series, seems like overkill for our use plus not sure wife would be comfortable driving it around town. They are lovely though.

Sorry your right. The thread title threw me off, thought we were talking about the G30 5 Series.

G20 3 Series came out in early 2019 and the 330e came with the bigger battery from launch. The G20 is a much better car than the previous F30.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,493 ✭✭✭Ivefoundgod

Yeah my own fault for posting about a 330e in the 530e thread! Yeah it does seem like a big improvement inside and out. Going to look at another one tomorrow so hopefully it works out.

Ended up test driving a 530e as well today along with a few 330es. It was a 191 UK import m sport model but seemed to be missing a few things that I'd have assumed was standard, reverse camera and apple CarPlay/android auto. Were these options does anyone know or why might they have been missing? It's possible CarPlay was there to be fair but I tried find it for 5 minutes and couldn't. Was much easier see it and add my phone on the 330es I test drove.

5 series was beautiful to be fair and may have won be over, torn between the two now.

I have a 191 530e that came without Carplay/Android, but was able to get it retrofitted for about 120 quid by an indie guy who does all that kind of stuff. FWIW, I absolutely love the car - have had it for just over 3 years now which is a record for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,493 ✭✭✭Ivefoundgod

Yeah I could probably survive without CarPlay but the reverse camera is a pain to go without. Wife in particular would be very nervy without one. Just a bit shocked that a 2019 5 series was even possible to come without one. I had a 2015 c class with one, just assumed they are standard on all the German premium cars since that era.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,283 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

My expectations are a bit lower for what BMW will consider standard equipment!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 433 ✭✭Woodie40

Wouldn’t buy any car that didn’t have Car Play, even budget brands have Car play now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,205 ✭✭✭joe1303l

Reverse camera can be retrofitted too but not cheap. Probably makes more sense to find one with the spec you want.

  • Subscribers Posts: 17,116 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

I had reverse camera retrofitted on my last one, it’s not that major a job once you have the part and loom. It’s basically swoping out the boot handle and routing the cable back to front footwell. Apparently it’s a doable diy in saloon, but it was too tricky in estate. Took about 4 hours to get it done. Got CarPlay and speed sign recognition coded at same time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,283 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

I probably wouldn't want to have a car long term without it, but as it's often a quick and affordable thing to retrofit, I don't think it'd be a dealbreaker for me while buying. Though it did feel a bit odd that the original buyer of mine skimped on the carplay but did get a few other extras.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,156 ✭✭✭jayo44

Reverse camera should be on all five series it's crazy.

Also I never wanted a car with 360 cameras but after using them on my g30 I bloody love them

Yeah I think that was my expectation that it would just be standard across the board but it's even more baffling to me that M Sports don't have them as standard. Very little excuse for any car made in the last 10 years or so not to have one but a 6 year old 5 series not having one is mental to me.
