Great comparison clip between show and game where Joel saves Abby. Ah this point in the game, you have been controlling Abby with little of her background which, again, pissed people off that they were put in control of the character that kills Joel. Tommy is with Joel instead and he gets KO'd for the scene. It's so great to see Mazin recognise the scenes from the game that absolutely should be kept in the show.

Ive never met a human being who said the second game was better than the first. The second turns into a slog (at the obvious point)

I loved every second of the first.

I don't really think comparisons with TWD are fair or warranted, because the issues with that show extend far beyond one or two things. It became a show that was so padded and bloated, constantly just filling time between mid-season and end-of-season episodes since they were the only episodes something important happened, and just trying to constantly raise the stakes with "This new group of enemies is even more dangerous than the last group" endlessly. It was a show that went on far too long and ran out of steam about 5 seasons before the show actually ended.

The Last of Us will quite possibly only run for 3 seasons by design. They have a framework to work to rather than just trying to spin wheels to drag the show out for more seasons. It's a smaller story rather than ensemble cast constantly introducing new characters.

Sure, the infected are basically zombies, and there'll be a good bit of "escape the zombies" scenes, but I can't imagine TLOU on its worst day being anywhere near as bad as the majority of TWD from Season 6 onwards.

Great ep. Reminiscent of a big GOT episode but without the polish. And a coincidental Ned Stark moment! Haven't played 2 so didn't see that coming with Joel. I don't really feel invested in any of the characters so it doesn't bother me. Don't dig the cast at all.

Joel still doesnt want to expose the secret if Abbys lot dont know it.

I hope so. I havent played the second game but the series so far has been faithful to both games. I think its fair to say the first game and season were well regarded and this season like the second game will probably be more divisive.

The second game was not divisive. It was universally acclaimed by critics and remains one of the best reviewed games of all time. Personally I thought it was a bit long (a view a good few people shared) but it was still incredible and not divisive at all.

There were a lot of losers who had a problem with Abby being muscular and Ellie's sexuality but those voices aren't even worth listening to.

It has a metacritic user score of 5.8. but yes you are right it was universally acclaimed by critics.

Metacritic user scores are not worth the digital paper they're written on. They are literally indicative of nothing.

As someone that knows nothing about the games that episode was a massive shock, gave me early Game of Thrones vibes. Not sure how the show will manage without Joel though, Pascal has a great screen presence.

Well the show is definitely recreating the doubts some had when Joel was killed off in the game. Just rolled credits on the remastered version of 2nd game tonight. Still 1 of my all time favourites. Although it does slow up a bit in the final stages the ending makes up for it easily. I'll be watching every Monday for sure. Wouldn't miss an episode.

    Ahh that was some episode!

Glad we resisted the spoilers. And discussion from the gamers in our house.

Will miss Joel but his days were justifiably numbered after the murderous rescue of Ellie from the Fireflies.

I don't really want to see too much more of Abby ( except Ellie killing her ) because Dever has had way too much exposure recently ( liked her in Dopesick) and am sick of her after the last ott dose of a series . But I think I will have to put up with it by the looks of what is in store . She is a great actress to be fair .Just seeing that she performed that scene 3 days after a major bereavement which is something . Did not like her in Apple Cider Vinegar or was that her character ?

What a great attack on Jackson and so glad that Tommy and Maria survived .

Wooden fence , all they had out in the wilderness ?

What happened the other 2 horses ? Abby and crew were leaving on foot .

I watched Episode 1 without recapping Season 1.

I thought Abby was actually Ellie in the future that now had a death wish on Joel, I'd forgotten about the whole Fireflies rescue.

Nice to see the tribute to Grand Slam winner Rory McIlroy by her choice of 9 iron for the torture. My mind works differently.

Why was Abby riddled with frostbite one minute then just sets off with the crew after killing Joel, does a good hour of torture raise your core temp.

Somebody compared the infected hoard attack scene to Hardhome, sorry it pales in comparison.

It's winter, their earth work ditches may have all been filled in by the snow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,394 ✭✭✭PhiloCypher

Your 1st question was explained in the show, Jesse told Ellie about a patrol stumbling on a group of infected buried in the snow where the outer layer of frozen infected acted as insulation for a core of still living infected. Abbey is unfortunate enough to awake an even larger group.

As for your 2nd question , spores aren't a thing in the show, They replaced the spores with tendrils as a method of infection. They even poke fun at it in the 1st season where Ellie asks Joel and Tess are spores a thing and they tell her no but explain about the tendrils.

Maybe just the critical circles I engage with, but I think it's perfectly fair to call TLOU2 divisive. Putting aside the moronic 'UgH tHeRe'S WoMeN iN iT' crowd, I heard and read a lot of debate and discussion about how successful or not the second game was at the time of release - in the games forum here, in podcasts, and reviews on quite a few major outlets. Certainly came across a lot of reasonable takes on why it did / did not hit the mark for individual players. I personally think it has its moments but is far too long and shoots for themes it neither has the capacity nor focus to hit as effectively as Druckmann hoped.

Lots of people loved the game, no doubt. But it's certainly a much more controversial game than its predecessor, for legitimate reasons alongside the idiotic ones.

The term divisive here was used in terms of it being "well received or regarded" vs the first game. I'd absolutely agree that it was subject to fair criticism and had issues and controversial elements to it. But the OP was framing it in terms of quality and reception which I would still stand by saying was not that divisive. That doesn't mean it was universally loved but the overwhelming opinion was positive.

I thought the second is far superior to first. The second is my favourite game. The first game is heavily trodden path story wise, the second was a truly original narrative experience.

Well I'm truly shocked that a video game would have a critical reaction from lads similar to that of Comic Book Store Guy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,505 ✭✭✭bren2001

The second is a slog at times. Anyone I've met has said the same. It's still a great game.

I think johnny_ultimate says it well above, it was very much a game that was divisive (ignoring the silly stuff)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,814 ✭✭✭EltonJohn69

I find the majority of games a slog but I didn’t with Last of us 2, I really connected with the story, characters, game world, loved the combat, each to their own I guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,505 ✭✭✭bren2001

ah yeah, they both won game of the year for a reason. They're both very good games.

Playing as the othe character, i just didn't enjoy. Most of my friends had the same view.

As you say, each to their own. I was really just responding to the aspect of the comment "it was obvious it was better than the first" - i disagree.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,500 ✭✭✭✭expectationlost

there no signs of ditches in the first two episodes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 42 Romario11

Jeez I thought that first episode was poor. Turned seemingly into a soap opera, no purpose for the characters other than their feelings and who's upset with who and who fancies who. Nothing there to want to watch anymore of it, apart from a mysterious pipe!

The Last of Us 2 is one of the greatest games ever made…….. AND it's a slog!

I loved it, but the criticism of it from me would be that it's too long. There's a very obvious part of the game where the game SHOULD end, or at least feels like it's ending, but it doesn't

It won game of the year for a reason! Originally I was really just responding to the aspect of the comment "it was obvious it was better than the first". I don't think there's anything obvious about it. The first never felt like a slog to me.

I personally wouldn't put either in the pantheon of greatest games ever but plenty of others would.
