It's not the only reason we love him.

We love a decent story that makes some semblance of sense. Some action, some smart quips, certain tropes from the originals.

I know this …… Ian Fleming wanted David Niven to be Bond …… I think in a serious film made in the late 1950s he'd have been a very good Bond too …..

I wonder how people view Bond compared to similar franchises such as Indiana Jones, Mission Impossible, Jack Ryan, Jason Bourne, Jack Reacher, John Wick, et al ….. The main difference is there are more Bond films than films in all these put together ….. MI being the closest to the amount of films ….. but with say Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, Keanu Reeves or Matt Damon so dominant in some of these as the only incarnation of the main character it makes it v different to Bond ….. that may lead to a comparison to the superhero closest in nature to Bond …. Enter Batman ….. Like Bond Batman was played by many and is quite often featured in cinema ….. and one could ask is Bond not just a superhero in all but name anyway ??? …. and is Luke Skywalker or Han Solo of Star Wars just Bond in space ….. and Moonraker not that far removed from either Bond or Star Wars ….. and is Mad Max just Bond in post apocalypse ??? …. Bond indeed preceded most of these …… and inspired some directly you bet …..

Getting back to Bond …. I like films from all incarnations and accept that each actor brought their own take to it …. Let's pick my 2 faves per actor …..

Connery ….. From Russia With Love and Goldfinger ….. pretty much what most people say ….. 2 of the greatest Bond films and action films ever made …..

Lazenby ….. just one, On Her Majesty's Secret Service …. defo one of the best of the Bonds …..

Moore ….. Live and Let Die and Octopussy ….. the first highly rated and the second very much underrated ….. both offer Moore's Bond at its best for me …. good fun but a serious believable story at the core too ….

Dalton …. The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill ….. obviously ….. but 2 of the best ….. one a conventional Bond the other a drug dealer revenge tale that would not be out of place on Miami Vice or as a Lethal Weapon film …. and Dalton's Bond fits easily into both worlds …..

Brosnan …. Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies …. again a highly rated Bond and an underrated one …. both provide the best of action and fast moving pace expected from the Brosnan era with a good story to back it up …..

Craig ….. Casino Royale and Skyfall ….. the jury is out on the other 3 but these 2 are brilliant ….. modern Bond at his best …..

A View To A Kill is underrated ….. I cannot understand the hate ….. Zorin is most likely the best villain ever and the film is fun and there is great action and yes it is better than SPECTRE for me too ….. SPECTRE is defo okay too but they ruined Blofeld by making him Bond's fake 'brother' …..

If there is a character called James Bond and he is the secret agent of that name ….. it IS a Bond film …. parody or otherwise …..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,135 ✭✭✭lumphammer2

Triple X and Octopussy were supposed to have made cameos in A View To A Kill ….. Maud Adams instead made a brief appearance uncredited on a bus ….. and Pola ivanova was invented to replace Triple X …..

You're right. Robin Hood Men in Tights should definitely be critiqued at the same level as Prince of Thieves.

Seeing as Casino Royale was mentioned, in passing just noting BBC Radio aired a new adaptation of it today with former on screen Bond baddie Toby Stephens as Bond.

I agree with the general gist of most of this post, including the comparisons with other franchises and the favourites for each actor. In relation to the later, Sean Connery: Goldfinger, Roger Moore: Live and Let Die, Pearse Brosnan: Goldeneye, Timothy Dalton: loved both and can't choose between them and Daniel Craig: Skyfall. As regards George Lazenby's sole offering On Her Majesty's Secret Service, I'm not overly keen on it and it would be in the running for my least favourite although there are a few others competing for that. All of Sean Connery's offerings were enjoyable except for his non-Eon production, and therefore unofficial Bond film, Never Say Never Again. I enjoyed all of Roger's films. I had mixed feelings about Pearse Brosnan and Daniel Craig's offerings- some good, some bland. Overall, I would say Sean's films were by far the best, even though there were a couple of outstanding ones from Roger. As it happens, my favourite Bond film, amongst all the different offerings, is Live and Let Die.

They should go back to the sixties era with Sean Connery as that when it was at its best. Brosnan was second.

I've always liked the idea of retro Bond but set during the fifties or even forties. Budget and the difficulty fitting advertising in makes it pretty unlikely though.

Budget is no problem now, but advertising is the issue. There'll be no Sony branded product placement in a 1940's set movie.

I didn't say there was no Sony in the 1950s. I said there would be no Sony product placement. So, unless Sony decide they want to boost sales of a pocket radio, that is not going to change.

I know you didn't you said 40s but in the fifties you could use some high tech secret device that may be used now? Or launch some retro looking new device?

It’s just a really hard sell. Brands use Bond to sell their flagship products. Once you go down the road of actually designing retro products just to fit the movie, you’re into niche fandom stuff. You’ll sell some, but less, and you’re spending money just to get there.

The beauty of Bond advertising is that you just plug in your own products and they’re instantly into the premium new fancy gadget category.

Some things would likely translate… the more storied and historic drink brands and fashion houses for instance, stuff that’s more focused on the brand legacy itself than the specific product. It definitely hurts the high end phone/watch/camera/car/misc gadget bracket though.

Maud Adams had quite a big part in TMWTGG before being the main female character in Octopussy.

Bit of an odd move that!

    Quick question for Bond fans.

In Moonraker did Jaws' girlfriend Dolly have braces on her teeth or not?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,151 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

Going purely on memory, no. She did have glasses though.

I'm not googling it, so open to correction.

Interesting question (braces on Dolly or not). Seems to be lots of debate about it out there, whether it's a Mandela effect situation or alternatively that the scene was filmed with & without braces and the not-braces has now become prevalent.

FWIW, I'm on the 'she had braces when I first saw it' side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,795 ✭✭✭✭salmocab

definitely has braces, I thought until I read this and now I just don’t know as I’ve been caught with this stuff before

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,616 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

Definitely she had them in my "memory".
Seems maybe not in reality… though other articles claim they were removed in later home releases.

Love the Mandela Effect conversations. Very interesting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,790 ✭✭✭saabsaab

Definately had them in some releases. There is a VHS tape and a newspaper review from the time that mentions them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,790 ✭✭✭saabsaab

I get what you're saying but it shouldn't be beyond the capacity of the scriptwriter/ad men to drop in a new product call it a new prototype device made by Q as a sideline .. Bond picks it up and looks at it with distain saying 'it will never catch on' or 'maybe someday everybody will have one'
