You think Rupert Murdoc owns Sky

He has not for years, that's illinformed.

Anyone remember when RTE had 3 pm kick offs?

Or when they had their version of MOTD to hilariously gazump the BBC they had it had 7 or 8 o'clock.

    Oh Billo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 563 ✭✭✭FazyLucker

I did not say anything about Rupert Murdoch owning Sky. I knew full well Comcast bought it a few years ago.

Et el as you may or may not know means and others, and the like, etc.

But if you want to nit pick, work away.

Sly have a tiered system which means you must have a basic pack to then go for sport - which is the core of the issue, pure greed. If I or any fan just want FTA channels and sport, then they should be able to do so.

    Now TV fixes that issue.

You buy the sports package and just the sports package.

    No contract.

Now TV? You're living in the past pal that was modern 8-10 years ago.

Did you buy a load of those dongles and are trying to flog them, or are you on commission or something? Nobody is buying that sort of thing any more. Nobody.

I dont get why it matters WHO decides 3pm games aren't shown on Sky etc. They aren't and that's that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,150 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

My point is that there are a lot of people on here who just don't seem to understand the basics of TV rights and in particular EPL rights and rant and rave about it.

People rant at Sky and other broadcasters about not showing 3pm games when it has nothing to do with them.

They rant about broadcasters not allowing them to watch all games when again it has nothing to do with the broadcasters.

They wonder why they don't get the choice of just buying a subscription for their team.

They wonder we why their cousin in Vancouver can get all the games at a very decent price and they can't.

    They make statements like

Sorry Rupert et al but the good times are over

even though Rupert is out of Sky for a good few years.

I mean, why would he care?

They wonder why the legitimate broadcasters can't match their illegal IPTV streaming service on price, oblivious to the cost of actually producting the content.

They think that if Sky were gone and some other entity took over then everything would be suddenly cheap.

You yourself even said a while back that you would like to see so and so shakeup the market

When I challenged you to explain how they would shake up the market you declined to explain.

Basically my point is that this thread is full of clowns who don't have a clue what they are on about.

I know how broadcasting rights work, I know why Sky etc can't show every game, I know why you can't just buy a club package, i know why it's cheaper in Vancouver, and I know that as long as the EPL is a top tier, high profile European league rights no matter what shape or form they take will never be cheap.

You need to direct that reply to the poster who says they have to buy a basic TV package from sky and then buy the sports package.

I explained to them that Now TV solves that problem.

It would do football no harm to have a financial reality check across the board.

I've been predicting the burst of the Premier League since the day it started.

The original UK owners gave way to the oligarchs and US owners with even more money, and then came the oil rich owners with even more money again, all constantly inflating the bubble.

There seems to be no end to it

I've given up predicting it's demise.

I think 99% of people know how it actually works with broadcasting rights and the 3PM ban. The thing is with IPTV you have every game for 60 quid a year in 4k. With NowTV Think first year is is 480 or something and doesn’t show every game.

It’s not just Sky people are complaining about its the overall Setup that frowned upon IPTV will force something to change hopefully for the better.

Not sure what points your trying to make.

Now TV is a month by month, no contract, keep it for as long or as little as you like.

Lots of discount codes on Bargain Alerts here.

I've got it before for a low as €10 a month.

Their sports package are exactly the same as the Sky Sports or Sports Extra packages but without the need for a satellite subscription or any sort of a base package.

Where are you getting 480 for the first year from?

IPTV will force something to change hopefully for the better.

So what will it change and how will it be for the better?

Or should I ask what should change?

Nothing is happening for at least 4 years.

After that you may have the end of the 3pm ban, you may have all games broadcast.

But it won't be cheap regardless of who owns the rights.

I think it is a massive bubble and it will burst.

It already happened in rugby in the premiership in England. Same pyramid, players getting paid big money, TV deals, clubs running up massive debt…

It collapsed, clubs went bust and strict salary caps had to be brought in. Never recovered.

Same will happen with football on a much bigger scale but it could go on a while yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,363 ✭✭✭jj880

But it won't be cheap regardless of who owns the rights.

That's why IPTV will continue to grow. Servers can shutter but theres no shortage of sellers ready to jump in if another seller can't get his service back up sharpish. We can debate the rights and wrongs of it but it's only going to get more popular as the cost of living soars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭Murt2024

still unsure what point your trying to make to be honest. It’s 28 a month for first year and extra fiver extra for 1080P and 8 euro extra 4k then jumps to 73 euro after first year. Obviously you can change household name and order put on a different card but it’s not cheap compared to IPTV. Now TV does have minimum terms just like Sky.

If you’re buying a day pass for 15 euro every Saturday and Sunday that’s 1500 euro a year. Still not understanding you and you don’t get TNT and premier sports.

if your buy the sports month for 20 quid rolling you don’t get TNT and Premier sports which is kind of pointless really due to the amount of top games on premier sports and tnt.

I still honestly have no idea what point your trying to make.

The reality is the rights situation in the UK and Ire need to be changed, the only difference between the two countries is that we get one 3pm on a Saturday compared to them.

The 2.45 to 5.15 rules need to be changed in the UK to allow us to watch the likes of the goals show that the PL produce for the world-feed. If they don’t the “illegal boxes” will grow even more massive.

Next 3 years are obviously taken up by Sky & TNT. Wonder what will happen after that. We shall see I suppose.

The future of football on British tv already involves Amazon.

And in the coming years I can see the likes of Meta and Google etc getting involved.

Sky, TNT etc will do well to compete with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,706 ✭✭✭irishgeo

It doesn't. Amazon don't have any of next seasons rights.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 563 ✭✭✭FazyLucker

We understand how TV rights work. We know the 3pm blackout was to not affect live attendances.

You don't seem to understand the meaning of Et al and continue to rant about people ranting

You seem to think you're the smartest man in the room and the only person who knows anything while talking about a TV service which modern service and technology have long rendered obsolete and overpriced.

You can feel free to keep paying over the odds all you want as you sit on your delusional high horse. The rest of the market is elsewhere enjoying what they want on demand.

    Have a good day

back on topic, how are UPC for blocking streams lately without VPN

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,714 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

A new trend I find lately is that service on the dodgy boxes are going down during PL games. I was trying to watch the hurling on Sunday and noticed the whole service was gone until Arsenal/Ipswitch ended

Not a problem I've had with NowTV in the past although that was a while ago, back when sky showed the GAA

If you can put Proton vpn on it it sorted it for me on the Firestick using America, it's free but only a few countries available to use.

Don't expect anything from life, just be grateful to be alive.

This is exactly what I am talking about when I said that this thread was full of illinformed posts.

As another poster pointed out Amazon are no longer in the mix when it comes to broadcast rights.

And there was no interest in the last rights auction from the likes of Meta or Google.

Now the EPL made some changes, they extended the term of the rights by a year and they reduced the amount of packages available, getting rid of the really small packages like Amazon had held.

But still it looks like the big tech companies were not interested.

So why do you think Sky and TNT would do well to compete with them ?

    Explain that for us.

As I keep saying, people who think that some big tech entrant is going to suddenly make it cheaper for access to EPL games are delusional.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 900 ✭✭✭Butson

I remember reading that it costs Netflix, all in, the same to fully make/produce an episode of something like the Crown than Sky pay to show one premier league game. That's everything - everybody paid and produced.

So that's an episode that can be watched over and over, all over the world, by all demographics.

When a premier league game is done, its done. Nobody is going back in two years to rewatch Aston Villa v Newcastle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,583 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I didn't say anything new entrant would make it cheaper, I just think there will be new entrants in the future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,297 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

This wrecks my head. I use my dodgy box nearly exclusively for F1. First few races were early in the morning, so no clashes. But the races during the day tend to have Premier League matches on at same time - so sometimes I do need a VPN to watch. It can be hit and miss, but VPN (I use Surfshark) always clears issues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 278 ✭✭left_hander

People who think people are going to miraculously return to pay €20/30/whatever to Now TV for a hugely limited service are delusional.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,150 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

That's why the solution that solved music and video illegal downloading will not work for sports.

There aint nobody offering every game in 4k, it would cripple any servers. Be very wary of anyone offering this.
