I I was born 87 years ago. For 65 years I've ruled as Tamriel's emperor, but for all these years, I've never been the ruler of my own dreams. I have seen the gates of Oblivion, beyond which no waking eye may see. Behold, in darkness, a doom sweeps the land. This is the 27th of Last Seed, the year of Akatosh, 433. These are the closing days of the third era, and the final hours of my life..

Well lads, it's been a long long, long, long time since I've played this. I will probably ended up buying this shortly. But I am looking forward to it! Anyone going to give it a go?

The last 10Gb are downloading now. My first ever pc game. Played the crap out of it on my first gaming laptop, the Dell XPS M1710 back in 2007. Looking forward to giving it a go, my pc is surely able to run it somewhat decently, hopefully.

A Bethesda game running well a launch? Oh my sweet summer child...

That shader preload on starting the PC version is a reminder of how things are nowadays.

I was just coming in to give out about that. It's been 5 minutes and I'm at 71%… If this was the PS5 I'd have the character created and be exploring Tamriel already!

Edit: The last 25% jumped, off I go!

TBH...it's one of the quicker ones compared to Uncharted etc

Game appears to run quite well in the initial sections, ultra wide support, DLSS/FSR options, frame generation etc

Be interesting to get it across to handheld like the Steam Deck and such to see how it fares

Skyrim was my introduction to the Elder Scrolls universe, so how Skyrimmy is Oblivion?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,185 ✭✭✭_CreeD_

    Skyrim is better.

My ES intro was Morrowind, Oblivion was technically far superior and while still really good lacked some of Morrowind's magic. When Skyrim was being released one of the devs said they deliberately aimed to put that sense of wonder at unique looking things on the horizon or top of a mountain, the need to go there and find out what it was leading your adventures along the way because they knew they'd missed it with Oblivion. There are still some great stories and gameplay but I think so much of it happens in underground dungeons with little overworld presence that it felt muted. Still it's well worth playing and if Skyrim is a 10, MW a 9 then Oblivion is about an 8 to me.

Ah, just finished downloading. See you all in a few months :).

Pretty impressed so far. Still in the opening dungeon because search everything followed by constant inventory management because I'm fully encumbered in the opening dungeon already (temptation for unlimited carry weight cheat intensifies). But it looks good. Bit more fecking about to do, but getting 70+fps with most things on medium. Bit juddery, but I'll turn down a few more things and see how I fare out. Outdoors to be tested yet.

But my main worry is it would look like an old game with new skin. However, they seem to have put the effort in here. So far. Still so, so early. Also tempted to hook up a controller…

I put my 100 hours into Oblivion (barely realising it was 100 hours) when I got a 360 back in the day - the scale matched with fidelity was pretty unparalleled at the time, but the game was a janky, unsatisfying mess of half-baked systems, uninspiring combat, repetitive dungeon crawls and uncanny valley NPCs. The sense of grandeur and adventure carried the day, and I’m glad to see some of the more egregiously frustrating systems have been tweaked here, but I probably need another 20 years before considering revisiting this one :)

A janky Bethesda game? I don't believe you.

    Console :

    setgamesetting factorstrengthencumbrancemult xx

-Sets carry weight as a multiple of str, default is 5lbs per. Seems to work oddly. or maybe it just took my first value of 10, when I increased it to 100 the value in inventory changed but I still got encumbered at roughly 2x the original. Which lead to….

    player.forceav encumbrance 0

-Every time you are encumbered run this to remove the effect. Presuming again it runs on multiples of the original carry weight.

I'm outside now and it's gorgeous, not just a reskin. UE5s nanite and the way it can render incredible 3d landscape variety and detail is on full show and really suits the setting. It hits the system hard, with everything maxed at 4K+DLSS-Quality I was getting around 90fps inside, outside that dropped to around 60 with some stuttering. FG smoothed it out mostly but still some stutter occasionally.

Gameplay has been really smooth, no crashes, oddities or being hit with archaic systems I'd forgotten about.

Yeah. I'm definitely impressed with the work put in. Got outside and it shone even at medium, although it also dropped my frames to sub 50 so a few more settings dropped and I get 60+ outside and 80+ inside. The torch takes 10 fps… I upped the brightness. I must mess around more and see if I can do more, but wanna just play it right now. Using a controller is better for my situation too, and it plays just as well. Looking forward to getting more into it now. Pity the fan noise is reminding me of my PS4. The temptation to leave it and pick it up on PS5 when it's cheap/added to Plus is not as strong as my want to play it yet though.

Really enjoying it so far. A great nostalgia trip. I love Oblivion!

I loved Oblivion , and played it modded to within an inch of its life on PC before Skyrim came out . From what I heard this is the same Oblivion game engine with UE5 graphics on top so theoretically easily moddable , so hopefully all the old Oblivion mods get converted . (I need my fancy townhouse pad thats hidden in the city walls for a start!!

Also from playing it last night , archery seems to be a lot closer to Skyrim than regular Oblivion.

Never played it. I'll wait for this to have the new release glitches ironed out on PS5, and when I've reduced my backlog a good bit. Or when it hits 20 quid or less. I hope there is a physical copy for PS5. The music sounds great, same composer as Skyrim. Something about these Bethesda games that other games don't match.

I bet the same team and engine is used for Elder Scrolls 6.

Hopefully they redo Morrowind and Fallout 3, as I've never played them either.

Anyone playing on a PC using a controller?

If so how is it compared to a controller for Skyrim?

Have read mixed reports on it today.

Can't do keyboard and mouse playing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,365 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

I have it installed on both Xbox and PC, using an Xbox controller. I'd have played all previous elder scrolls, fallout games and starfield on an Xbox controller. Seems fine to me, what's the issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,116 ✭✭✭paulbok

The original game didn't have native controller support, and the community fix for it was not great. Have read the controller support on this remake wasn't great, note on Steam as having partial controller support.

The best part is thanks to many years of partying in my 20s, eventually settling down and having kids, and thanks to work, my brain is so fried I've largely forgotten a huge chunk of the game.

Catching vampirism is every bit the pain in the hole that I remember it to be in this game.

Outside of that, I'm really enjoying being back in the game. They did a great job.

Only played a few hours on first release so it essentially a new game for me. Id never have paid for it but on Gamespass its a must. Played for about 2 hours last night, it looks lovely and zero glitches thus far. The only thing thats grinding my gears is swapping between weapons ie having to open the menu to do so. Is there a way it can be done using the direction pad ie down for melee, right for bow, up for healing etc?

There's a way to assign items like bows/swords to a wheel for quick switching but I'm PS5 so buttons are likely different.

The difference is pretty staggering from the original, I know it's an old game but everything is so much clearer, they clearly put a lot of work into the Daedric stuff as well as it just looks phenomenal.

No glitches at all alright though every time you come out of a loading screen the player character looks like they're falling from a height, I'm worried the game is loading too fast at times and I'll end up falling through the map😂

Are oblivion gates spawning before you reach Kvatch a bug? Once I left the sewers and went wandering and joined the mages guild. Came across a portal out by itself.

Id completely forgotten about the persuasion mini game for battering.

Also finding lock picking much more difficult compared to Skyrim.

    But,

They have done a wonderful job with this. It's looks magnificent and plays very well. Only had one crash so far.

Totally jealous of those players who are getting to try this for the first time! "Oh boy it's got Patrick Stewart, hope he's around for the whole game"

You have 9 quick slots, from the inventory click the left analog stick, use the right stick to highlight which number you want to fill and press X/[] on whatever item you want in the quickslot. Then in game, hold the left bumper (LB/L1). Plays fine on an Xbox controller for me.

They did a great job making the game look good, but the rose tinted glasses are off now and its still the same game behind it, so it still plays old. If you've never played it, but have played Skyrim, you'll want to play Skyrim. You can see where Skyrim put all the improvements, and I miss them tbh! Even how skills and perks upgrade is just a poorer version of Skyrim, which makes sense.

Not sure how long more I'll play, and I've seen comparison videos of the PS5 Pro and my rig can't do the same level of quality and performance, so might stop and wait for it to be cheap/free on PS5. Even then, I don't think I'll play it to completion because while I don't remember most of it, I still get the "played it already" feeling now the graphical shine is making way to old systems which were great in 2007. Graphically, it looks like a remake, but it is still 100% a remaster behind it. Modern games just highlight how much we've evolved, and it's hard to go back to what Oblivion offers in gameplay, because Skyrim improved on it in every way. Which again, makes sense. Or should. Sequels should always build on the original, and Skyrim really did do that, especially the rerererereleased version they last did!

I dunno, I love the fact that in Oblivion you can just sneak around the first couple of dungeons and max it out killing rats in a way Skyrim didn't make that as easy😂

I get what you're saying about it feeling old if you've played it before mind you. But I guess the remaster might put new eyes on the game, which I'm slightly jealous of!

I wonder how many of the 4m are actual sales? Either way, it's been a big success alright.
