You will find that very few young Irish people will watch even a minute of it. They have no interest whatsoever and probably view it all as plain weird. I have huge confidence in our young people to position all organised religion exactly where it should be in Irish society in the near future. They simply have no baggage or brainwashing and will abandon all the nonsense involved.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Robert Harris barely renamed the cardinals when he wrote "Conclave"

I always cringe when I hear that stuff. Like the hint is literally in the name.

Interesting just catching up with the thread that the opinion seems to have swung in 24hours form not reacting enough to it to reacting too much. It kind of goes to show that as with anything in this country there will always to some people to complain irrespective of the situation

Talk about completely missing the point.

The item should have coverage but it RTE should not be a platform to promote the Catholic Church which I find it often is.

Also, in reality not impacting many people. In work this morning and nobody mentioned it.

Another day and another list of potential popes - I certainly don’t want to see either of the American options chosen - that will set the church back decades, ironic considering how forward thinking and “modern” America was perceived by us 30 years ago.

Going purely on the commentary in this article and nothing more, Matteo Maria Zuppi (Italy), 69, Archbishop of Bologna seems to be one of the more progressive and down to earth choices

I was watching the news last night and my 12 year old came into the room.

“Still dead?!” He asked with a smirk.

    I was very proud

I was pleased to see the Pope out and about on Sunday.

When news of his passing was announced yesterday morning I posted a message of condolence.

I like to think I reacted correctly on both occasions.

RTE show an awful lot of stuff which few people want to watch. Many of their programmes seem to exist only to keep a favoured presenter in a job.

They still don't dare remove the twice daily catholic call to prayer. They're an organisation stuck in an Ireland of decades ago.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

I hope he has no access to pets or other children

I suppose the next pope is going to be another Ratzinger type who is much more of a fire-breathing traditionalist with questions about Vatican II and little regard for nice public pronouncements.

Why? Maybe he correctly identified adults fascination with round the clock news cycle focusing on a story for hours on end that can be covered in 15 minutes. Not a dig at the pope, but as with many other stories I could safely guarantee that not much new in the story is offered after hours of conversation.

As much as Francis has loaded the voting cardinals with his chosen ones, I’d tend to agree with you- I’d be very surprised if they did elect anyone even half similar to Francis

Classy. Sounds like the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree so.

Similar experience years ago and decided then that while I believe in JC I could not follow a religion whose leaders were so hypocritical and judgemental of others while not keeping their own house clean .

I agree he did not do enough for those abused and for women but he did make some efforts to change the Curia and the system and he apologized publicly and acknowledged the wrong doings which had not been done before

Not enough for many who suffered at the hands of nuns , priests and bishops. Certainly no attempt at proper reparation .

I think that the RCC needs to be dismantled completely and its wealth distributed and to start again with the involvement of ordinary people if that is what people want ...but that's not going to happen any time soon .

And there is a lot of people young and old who are happy with the church and will not see that it needs to change so our talking about it from the outside is irrelevant to them .

Any change needs to come from those religious faithful themselves .

Most definitely not better, far darker. A quote from the book of Isaiah comes to mind "And they will say evil is good and good is evil".

I'd be proud. A good healthly scepticism and laconic attitude is a virtue

While I’m not celebrating the death of Mr Pope, I will laugh at a joke about the woo that he was a big part of.
I’m delighted that my children grow up in a world where it is ok to ridicule such foolish beliefs.

    this is quare funny

sorry to single you out Murph but how did the thread go from “RTE should be ashamed of themselves 9:01 in the morning and not a lick of coverage!”

    But fast forward and now

“How dare RTE show this crap”

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,190 ✭✭✭Raichų

But that’s just plain wrong because there’s millions of people in Ireland who do practice religion and those programs are for them. It’s a state broadcaster and whether you like it or not people in the state are religious to varying degrees.

Like when you compare to some other countries, namely the states, we’re very mild in our approach to God and religion etc.

every morning our children don’t pledge allegiance to a flag, we don’t say “God Bless Ireland” every time we finish a sentence and besides communion and confirmations being still practiced for in school we’ve come a long, long way since I was a young lad in primary school towards opening our eyes and minds a bit.

I personally follow no organised religion or religion at all for that matter. But that said it offers some people the peace and comfort they require in a dark time and just something to believe in which is no harm at all. Why do you (and so many others for that matter) care that other folks practice religion? When’s the last time, honestly now, you had someone “force” it on you?

Honestly like some people really do act like they are raped daily with a crucifix. Religion is all around us whether we like it or not; it’s an individual choice to decide if you follow it or ignore it. But you can’t expect everyone to agree with you because you don’t want to see the Angelus or hear about the Pope.

I was watching House M.D yesterday on Netflix with the Mrs. No point to that comment only to say it didn’t have a mention of the pope- so if RTE’s coverage is upsetting you, maybe be a big boy and just change the fcuking channel?

27% are practicing Catholics. Millions is a bit optimistic.

I would say the coverage from all media in Ireland is a bit excessive given the following.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,182 ✭✭✭Iscreamkone

For balance maybe RTE should have “The Life of Brian” on the other channel

I'm an atheist but that's my belief. I don't have a problem with the angelus. There are a great many Catholics in Ireland. They are not forcing me to pause and bow and pray. I read some priest say that people can simply take it as a minute to breathe/relax/reflect. And I like that. But even if it was more overt as it was when I was growing up, I still wouldn't have a problem with it. I don't have a problem with mass being on television either. Nobody putting a gun to my head, forcing me to watch. I don't want to watch it? I have a remote control. And before people ask, no, I don't believe we should have a call to prayer on state broadcaster. Just as I don't believe that Islamic countries should have the angelus on state broadcasters.

I will go to church for weddings and funerals, christenings etc. I stood for my Godson at his confirmation recently. Why? Because it wasn't about me. It was his day. It was a day important to HIM. I won't force MY beliefs on HIM by refusing. At weddings, funerals, whatever, it's not about me so of course I'll go and go through the motions. There is an element of narcissism with these people who make a show of "not being forced". A sort of "Look at me. I look down upon your silly superstitions and am better and smarter than you".

I have no problem with the coverage on TV. He was an important part of many people's lives. Not mine. But an important and respected part a great many people in Ireland that they will miss. Don't like it? You have a remote control too.

Do you mind them running all the primary schools?

Do you mind when they lobby to change the laws of the land to suit their weird beliefs?

Do you mind when they discriminate against LGBTQ? They are allowed to do legal weddings (unless you’re gay of course). We should take the legal weddings off them immediately. It’s 2025 ffs.

Let them play their woo by themselves but their ridiculous beliefs have no place outside in modern society.

It’s news that Mr Pope is dead and they will put on a great show because that’s what they do best - marketing. They are selling eternal life to fools at a cost.

Do you mind them running all the primary schools? All? My niece doesn't teach at a catholic primary school. My brother in law teaches at a protestant secondary and my nephew at a lay secondary

Do you mind when they lobby to change the laws of the land to suit their weird beliefs? No. Just as people can and did lobby successfully against their beliefs. So you're saying their NOT entitled to their opinions?

Do you mind when they discriminate against LGBTQ? They are allowed to do legal weddings (unless you’re gay of course). We should take the legal weddings off them immediately. It’s 2025 ffs. There is nothing forcing people to get married in a church. Their own orientation and how that fits (Or doesn't) with their own beliefs if their own business. Not mine. So we should make it illegal for people to get married in a church?

Let them play their woo by themselves but their ridiculous beliefs have no place outside in modern society.

It’s news that Mr Pope is dead and they will put on a great show because that’s what they do best - marketing. They are selling eternal life to fools at a cost.

So Archbishop Malcom McMahon, of Liverpool on CH4 News tonight- and I quote:

On the question of change in the church
“It’s not his job to change things - his job is to preserve the teaching of the church and pass it on to next generation of Christian’s”

Hmmmm- sounds like a standard defence response

    “the church is pretty inclusive”

    Bollox

“I don’t want to go back to the past”

    Ok
He wishes the next pope to be Pope Francis 2- some hope there. However, at the start of the programme, Ch 4 interviewed people around St Peter’s square- whether by editing or just by chance I don’t know, but vast majority wanted a reversion back to more conservative Catholicism - not good in my view- and no surprise, one of those soundbytes came from an American priest

I’m sure no more inquisitions and not backing crusades is some kind of change from back in the day.
