Very odd list and high up choices to be honest. Destiny's child MIssing from the list. No six, no jedward(somewhat tongue in cheek but they had some of the biggest selling singles ever in ireland) but no damien dempsey just a very very odd list, its more like a top 500 based off the past 3 months number of plays

Very good shout on Feel Good Inc and Clint Eastwood missing out yet Dare and Melancholy Hill making it (not that they aren't great). I wouldnt have been surprised (dissapointed but not surprised) if Gorillaz missed out entirely but if I had to pick their best Feel Good, Clint and 19-2000 would have been the trio I'd have expected.

On Melancholy Hill playing again now.

No harm if a good chunk of these 500 start making regular appearances now.

Sorry but on what planet is Pink Pony Club the number 1?

Not having that. Nobody is voting for that as the best of the last 25 days never mind 25 years.

This thread, and presumably TodayFM's instagram/twitter/facebook etc. are busier now than theyve been in recent times. Its all about the clicks, Bauer/TodayFM probably couldnt give a toss if no1 was deserving or not, it was a good choice as it got people talking and drove traffic.

Ray not holding back on the backlash he has gotten since revealing the #1.

The ‘new’ Music Master just a very watered down version of the old one. Sounds to me like they don’t want to put in the effort of writing the volume of questions required anymore! Disappointing, as it was definitely the best thing about Dave’s show.

    yeah its pretty lame

Well we're going to be very surprised. And very disappointed.

As far as I can see, the third oldest song in the list in terms of earliest appearance on a release of some sort is Californication by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The album of the same name was released in June 1999. The song was released as a single in June 2020.

In second place is Babylon by David Gray. It was on his November 1998 album White Ladder and was released in July 1999 as a single. White Ladder got re-released in April 2000, and Babylon got re-released in June, so I presume that's why it's eligible.

But while those two songs got releases or re-releases within the cutoff, there's no excuses for the inclusion of You Make Me Wanna... by Usher. It was released in August 1997 as the lead single from his album My Way which came out the following month. But there's no indication anywhere that it got a re-release this century. Wikipedia says it the vinyl got released in the USA in 2001 but that came out in the UK in 1998. So it has no credentials at all for being in the poll, and even the DJ at the time on Saturday afternoon mentioned that it got a 1997 release and muttered something along the lines of "Maybe it got re-released, let's just forget about it..." or something, as if to say "We'll let that one slide, moving quickly on..."

So the poll includes the same song twice and another song that is too old to be eligible, and no-one saw fit to do anything about it. What a crock of ****.

I can't remember her name, was it Eimear Shannon? Her replacement's first name is Shannon, maybe that's what's confusing me. Anyway. The first named lady was the brains behind the Music Master questions, and when she left the station to great adulation in February or March, it was stated on the show that she'd written questions to last until some particular date in April. So I'm guessing that's what's happened; they've no-one to write 40-ish questions per weekday so they've watered it down to 50 questions a week.

Yep theyve ruined the only reason to listen to the show now. Cut the time it takes and they use that for more ads or bad music.

Yeah, the new format of music master isn't as good.

Someone messaged in Dara Quilty (covering for Ray Foley) with a theory that makes sense. When you submit your votes for the song of the quarter millennium you get entered into a draw for Electric Picnic tickets. Chapel Moan is headlining EP so the voters only care about entering the ticket draw.

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,986 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Heard that, Quilty then pointed out a song or two later Hozier is also going to EP so could explain how he got 2 in top 5.

Might explain it tbf. I'm sure some voted multiple times for a chance to get tickets.

So you only got an entry to the draw if you voted for CR or Hozier?

More musings on the Top 500:

    1. Here's the highest placed songs that weren't promoted on the voting page:
      32: Fix You
      30: Vida la Vida
      27: Uptown Funk
      20: Toxic
      15: Crazy in Love

If songs like that, typical for the Today FM playlist, were always going to do well, why bother with promoting any songs or artists in the first place? The next time round they should just use a straight poll and no messing. The cream will rise to the top anyway.

    2. Gracie Abrams is conspicuous by her absence! That's So True spent seven weeks at number 1 in the Irish Singles Chart in the last half of 2024, with I Love You, I'm Sorry getting in for two as well. What's going on there? Did those songs seriously get forgotten about??? Something's up there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,986 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

No but if you were a fan of theirs and didn't have EP tickets you'd naturally enter this as often as you can to get tickets.

And obviously if you want to win tickets to see Hozier and CR you would naturally put them at the top repeatedly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 184 ✭✭EveryoneKnowsNobodyCares

I will say though that Hozier made it to 3 and 5 last year with no tickets being given away (or were there??!?), so 3 and 8 this time around might be expected without tickets being given away for him.

Still enjoying* the new Music Master despite it being watered down. Now they've taken to not letting the contestants know after they answer each question whether they've got it right or not. Instead, when they've had their five questions each, he then goes through the answers one by one and gives the score updates. I can appreciate them trying to give it a bit of edge. I'd like though for someone to be able to get the certificate and €250 voucher based on some sort of excellence such as getting 5 out of 5 or maybe a playoff against other top scorers.

    *But for how long?

i wasnt impressed yesterday and even less today, its rubbish, get a few questions and your a musicmaster, no final question, no challenge at all,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,589 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

Exactly this. 3 of us here at work would play it daily but we all agree it's rubbish now. Completely dumbed down, easier questions and too much sh1te talk and Ian Dempseying at the start too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,838 ✭✭✭billie1b

No €250 or certificate anymore I believe, just the bluetooth headphones for the winner and mug for the loser.

It's terrible, the only part of the morning radio that I liked, i'll give it until Friday and if I still feel the same i'll tune out at 9am and tune back in at 2pm

Do the top 500 this weekend Daichee "Anxiety" could well make top 3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,884 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Find it funny that the "Top song of the past 25 years" isn't worthy of ever being played in full on the station. Instead a completely butchered radio edit is played every time.
