That's why I think that the Catholic Church is overdue a schism. The traditionalist hardliners and the progressive hardliners absolutely hate each other and are just waiting to get into power so they can excommunicate the other faction. Any moderate compromise would simply be unacceptable to either faction - Pope Francis was supposed to be that compromise candidate and has completely pissed off both sides during his 12 years as pope.

Catholic numbers have tripled in the last century to over a billion.

The ban on contraception is surely a contributing factor.

It might also accelerate the decline of Catholicism in Europe, as the ethnonationalists start branding Catholicism as a "third world African / Asian shithole religion" and start claiming that Europe needs to "return" to pagan European religions because being European is more important than being Catholic.

The fact that the world population has more than quadrupled in the same period suggests it's been counterproductive.

I didn't know that but it makes sense now. So the Vatican sided with the Nazis and now they side with the modern day Nazis led by Putin. Fcuk me they're a great bunch.

Don’t beat yourself up. The mainstream media depends on clowns like you for swallowing their propaganda.

I wasn't talking about Irish cradle Catholics, but rather cradle Catholics in some parts of continental Europe like Germany and the Benelux region.

Wait I'm confused? I thought you agreed the church supported the Nazis? They don't directly support Russia btw but even sitting on the fence is a bad look to me.

    Pope Frank anecdote:

Herself has a cousin whose granddaughter has downs. Said granddaughter and another kid with downs are going to be confirmed, the church they're members of, had voted (uhuh) that all the kids would be confirmed by the bishop in the main chapel - except the downs kids, who were to be confirmed in the basement chapel. For their own good, of course.

This was some years after Frank became Pope. The pope's visiting NYC (where cousin's family is,) around this time and after his Mass he walks among the audience. Well, the mother of the other kid had taken him and the granddaughter to the Mass and they made their way up to Frank at the end who waved his hands over them and said kind things. The mother mentions to one of Frank's assitants this business with the confirmation in the basement. Said assistant takes her information and says he'll talk to Frank about it.

Fast forward and in a few days, there's a message from their local priest, that those Downs kids are to be confirmed in New York's St. Patrick Cathedral by the local Cardinal. They're the only ones from their congregation getting such a prestigious location for the event.

Seems like Frank was a good guy, and at lest in this case he did (or his people did) the right thing. Pretty awful those kids fellow congregation members were so cruel, but hey, it is the RCC.

Absolutely incorrect that the Vatican sided with the Nazis. Hitler despised the Church and thousands of Catholic priests were sent to concentration camps. The Church viewed the Nazi party as sinister and depraved from the outset, especially their links with paganism and the occult.

The burning question for me is why people in the Republic of Ireland can forgive the British for centuries of tyranny but can't forgive the Catholic church for it's wrong doings? Maybe you are only quick to forgive when they have something to offer you.

    Quite a bizarre leap.

Why are you so sure that they're the same people and why are you not acknowledging that there are still significant numbers of practising catholics here, people who don't have time for the church but judge men of the cloth as individuals, and people who are still hostile towards the British? (Despite the British today not being the same people who colonised and brutalised the Irish, and massive numbers of British being of Irish heritage).

    I'm mint.

Because they denied, blamed the victims and refused to pay their part of the redress scheme.

People have moved on from Catholicism anyway as they have in most of the developed world. Forgiveness isn't really a thing for most I'd imagine, they have just lost interest and the church plays no part in their lives.

Sad to hear of the passing of Pope Francis, a very good and humble man who acknowledged the past wrongs of the Catholic Church and was very open-minded and progressive in his stance. A true man of God.

Pope Francis wanted to make the church accessible to all who were willing to believe - I myself walked away from organised religion with no regrets more than 30 years ago but I know how important the church still is to many in this country.

In particular, Pope Francis's statement some years ago on LGBT people and families was a real effort to reach out to sexual minorities after decades of isolation, exclusion and condemnation from previous pontiffs.

May he Rest In Peace. 🙏🕯🕊

The churches wrong doings in Ireland didn't happen in a vacuum.

British monarchs are not over here robbing our independence as we speak; however priests are still raping children or attempting to?

Did you read the news recently yeah?

I know you're not Christian as such now.

But that's a really genuine post, what Christianity should be about. A good heart.

    Agree.

RIP Pope Francis . A man of humility who did his best to reshape the Church's path from greed and bigotry to something that is worthy of Jesus Christ .

Hopefully whomever succeeds him will carry on his work and improve on it further . Badly needed .

Many lapsed Catholics may never return but at least the Roman Catholic Church should not be driving people away

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

Still a big conservative group in the Vatican - but considering vast majority of voting cardinals are Francis’ appointments there’s a chance more liberalism might emerge

He was still fond of the auld greed when it came to paying out to victims of rape and human trafficking.

This reformer narrative is being massively over played. Wow he took them from complete evil to very slightly less complete evil. Big whoop.

The only things that spring to mind are calling for a greater role for women in the church and welcoming of those of a LGBTQ persuasion. Some people call him radical, but if that's what they call radical there's little hope for it's revival in the western world.

I was sad to hear the news about the death of Pope Francis today.

In my eyes; he was a champion of human decency & compassion within the Catholic Church. He never faltered his belief or desire to become a person of unity to those who were within the Catholic faith & outside of it. He never gave into negative opinions or viewpoints about his path as being the Pope. He carried out his own duties with humility, decency & a huge amount of self respect for those around him.

He had a steadfast attitude to looking after people who were poor & vulnerable. And the people he had helped throughout his lifetime as Pope will remember Francis for making their own lives better when they needed it most. They may regard Francis as their hero within the Church when they pray for him now when he is no longer with us.

The church now has to go through a difficult period of thinking & reflection over the next few weeks about who is going to take over as leader of the Catholic Church after Pope Francis left this world today. There maybe an opportunity for the Cardinals being eyed up to take on this role to embolden & enhance the legacy of Francis after his death. It maybe a good time for the cardinals within the church to accelerate that message of decency & respect even more now when the firebrand stance of Conservatism is ringing through the world with a huge amount of destruction & misery among our own populace today.

Will it happen though? Who knows! It will be a question that will be answered for another day.

    RIP Pope Francis.

People expect too much from a pontiff. The struggles with the Curia etc mean progress is very, very slow.

I think Pope Francis was a good man. But is 76 too old to begin such a role..
