DOOM : The Dark Ages PC/PS5/Xbox Series X|S / Gamepass Day One

Eternal was so crazy but this looks crazy boring so far. rolling my eyes at the Lovecraft mention tbh, probably the most overused influence in art/theme design in games imo

Disc in, 80Gb downloading. I said I'd give it a go. Liked the 2016 one but never finished it. Tried Eternal but way too fast and didn't like the constant rush. From what everyone is saying about this being a slower more grounded affair, I'm hoping I'll like this.

Edit: I'm 3 levels in and I'm liking it. Definitely slower than previous entries (so far), meaty combat as expected. Game plays as quick or as slow as you want but the fights are still somewhat frantic. It's still Doom, just not as fast. Exploration rewards skins and upgrade collectibles. But you can also just mainline the story/levels as quick as you want. Loads of difficulty options to make it as easy or hard as you want too, which is nice to have. Plays fairly smooth 60fps on PS5 Pro.

It's definitely not what I had expected. The setting is mad. I'm still in the learning things phase but I'm enjoying it.

Throwing the shield saw into enemies is class. But I feel the gore kills leave a lot to be desired. Not half as gorey as 2016. I just seem to punch them and stuff pops out.

But I'm enjoying the slower pace and how to put things together.

It looks amazing.

Yeah I definitely can ramp up the speed when I get going. There are so many settings to tweak gameplay it really opens it up to lots of styles.
