100% - they created the global trading environment they now have the cheek to complain about.

It looks like though that the messiah is about to bring whole thing crashing down.

What is leading to the fall in his approval? I don't see anything that he has done that would be a surprise.

Those numbers would suggest that those people are easily swayed, and the next bit of good news will see them flock back to support

Despite the spin put on things by the liars / propagandists in Fox News, I think the US public are well aware that 'Liberation Day' and the tariffs thing has been a total car crash and has gone very badly for Trump.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,949 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

People might indeed be beginning to lay the blame at trumps feet but I also think you would be surprised how many still probably believe the tariffs are paid by the other countries and not US consumers and therefore this is the other countries fault somehow.

Trump complaining about countries having trade deficits with the USA is like somebody maxing out their credit card and buying everything in Brown Thomas and Weirs jewelers and then complaining that Brown Thomas and Weirs are cheating them and ripping them off. All they are doing is outspending their income by maxing out the credit card.

The USA is maxing out their credit card by $2 trillion a year and Trump is blaming every other country on the planet except Russia and of course the USA for this.

Good news for Putin - thank you Mr trump

Russian ruble becomes top-performing currency amid Trump trade war, peace hopes. The ruble has appreciated by 38% against the dollar in the over-the-counter market since the start of the year, outpacing gold's 23% rise, Bloomberg reported.

Russia has linked the ruble to the war economy, and increased interest rates massively in the civic economy to compensate. In other words, they've based the ruble on their weapons based manufacturing, and not the general economy.

It's a boost right now because they're manufacturing weapons on a scale not seen since the Soviet Union, but it's not sustainable in the long run.

I think they just believe the sh01te they’re fed - they’re like robots. Lets see how he feels when the migrant workers won’t turn up at his farm come harvest time because they’re scared sh1tless ICE will nab them on their way home

I wouldn’t be holding my breath on people laying the blame at trumps feet- considering the number who voted for him, believing all the rubbish he’s spouted, they’re not going to turn away that quickly - they are in general, thick as two planks - they will believe what MAGA tells them

I'm sure that's some of them, yet, sometimes you run across someone that otherwise seems intelligent, yet now is deep in 'leopards ate my face' regret.

    https://www.nj.com/politics/2025/04/trump-maga-voter-being-decimated-by-tariffs-wanted-sympathy-he-found-only-scorn.html

This particular Trump supporter 'thought small business infrastructure would be in place' so that bringing manufacturing back, could happen.

Obviously in hindsight, he was a fool, but I wonder why he's a fool. An ignorant, bigoted pig? Probably not. A poorly educated product of the US educational system? Probably has a lot to do with it.

What I found most interesting about the guy, is how left-wing US he sounded. "I'm a good person."We should all care about each other regardless of who we voted for." Definitely sounds on the left, but clearly is full on (if not aware) Trumpist. The heavy use of profanity is kind of telling, too.

It's why recovering from Trump is a LONG way away, if ever. Hopefully the world survives him.

Yeah, I think America is a lost cause. A great country in so many ways, but what made it great seems to be going or gone.

And as long as the MAGA crowd are there, it'll never be a well country again. Let's be honest, they're degenerates who's main hope is that hope for Jesus to come back to life to start wiping out people they don't like. Between fundamentalist religion, racism, greed is good, hatred of their government, cuck-level slavishness to money, a "me first" philosophy towards society and ever increasing stupidity, in their soul the MAGA crew are a fundamentally broken and hate-fuelled people.

And if that's what the majority of Americans vote for after 10 years of this nonsense, then that's what they want as the character of their nation, and there's no disguising the fact the Americans, either through devotion, support, indifference or quiet deference, are happy to have the MAGA agenda be their doctrine.

MAGA is America now. It is the mainstream, it is the driving philosophy, and the most popular one overall. MAGA isn't a fad, after more than 10 years of this carry-on, it's the true character freed from it's shackles. This what the majority of Americans are, and thus this is what America is.

And to be honest, if that's the way they're going, the further we are away from them as a society, the better. They're only going one way, and it ain't up or forward.

A big drop in the dollar affects their purchasing power. There's reports of people being told to hold off on their retirement due to stocks taking a walk off a cliff. That will impact approval ratings before the inflation issues actually hit.

Some of them are too far gone though, thats the problem. Rather then realise they are stupid, ignorant a*shats, they would rather dig their heels in.

You reap what you sow, this man really thought trump had a plan and had supports in place for importing businesses?? How stupid can you be and how smart did he think Trump was? Even more then that he did not seem to admit he was wrong, rather just that people should not make fun of him for making the wrong decision??

I don't buy that "left wing" for a second; he's reaching for the "We should all care.." bit because he's been adversely affected and can't deal with the same Trump style retorts he's now experiencing. He cared not one jot for others when he voted for Trump yet others are supposed to care for him now?

Ten years ago DJT impersonated a disabled journalist; they all laughed along with him; he can stick his "We should all care" up his hole.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,338 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Yes to all of the above, but there must be a good 80m or so voters who haven't been been voting for Trump since 2016 and are probably looking on horror. But as you say, the MAGA goons appear to have taken over the country and are sending it over a cliff, without much opposition either.

Republicans in general are socialist when it's on a really small scale in their immediate bubble, it's kind of funny.

The most obvious example is that due to the ridiculous cost of healthcare, many Christian Church groups have their own shared "insurance". Essentially they all pay into a group fund and then if any member of the church gets sick, medical expenses are paid out of the fund.

They'll also be really helpful within their own community (hilariously despite being anti-regulation and government overreach they'll generally sign up to live in a HOA estate with ludicrously restrictive rules - see Florida for examples!) But they'll be neighbourly and help shovel snow from other people's drive in winter or share food or donate to local charities etc.

It's only on a national scale or where they think their money will help people NOT like them that they have a problem.

If it's medical bills for someone from their own church? Sure! Socialism is great! But if their hard earned dollars go to pay for a faceless stranger to get the benefit of the social security net? Fúck em. They should have worked harder.

Look 22.2% of the population directly voted for Trump which in a winner take all election system means the rest become unrepresented

It’s a mathematical fact that half the population have below average intelligence

So it’s quite likely that most of this 22% are thick as planks and deserve all the leopard face twerking coming their way

It’s the small percentage of population that are smart and voted for Trump (tech bros, ceos) who are now looking on in horror (f**k em too)

And of course we had the “but but Trump would be better for Palestine” crowd who were incredibly enough cheering for Trump

The UK must allow free speech if they want a trade deal!

    Meanwhile in the US

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,338 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

I'm surprised people aren't warning Starmer off signing a trade deal with Trump. It sounds like potentially bad news for the UK with many alarm bells flashing.

He might want to chat with Canada and Mexico about what free trade deals with Trump result in

I know Canada and Britain are facing different scenarios, but it's gotta be annoying for those in the colony to see their daddy kowtow to Trump while they are so willing to fight against it. Elbows up and all that

As I said before, absolutely zero sympathy for any trump voter who is subsequently hurt by his policies. I will give them this badge maybe, but that's all..

I wonder will our universities make a move like the French? Maybe the French universities are quicker off the mark than our own, who probably feel they have to look to the relevant Government Demartment(s) for permission to do anything.

    https://www.theguardian.com/education/2025/apr/17/nearly-300-applications-to-french-university-offer-to-take-in-us-academics

Given our common language, Irish universities should find it easier to attract top talent. Maybe joint action by European and other nations could shift a huge proportion of the USA's human capital abroad. Ultimate triumph of the Know-Nothing party.

We should definitely be making plans regarding it, but more as a European entity rather than individual countries offering 'deals'.

It's so bizarre what is happening rn on the US side. Fine, they want jobs and infrastructure back. That's pretty understandable really, but they seem to think that people will just decide overnight to relocate their careers and residence, and somehow at the same time smuggle all of the multi billion dollar factories with them while they do it.

    The US is cooked

By free speech they mean what we agree with.

It's all getting stranger and stranger.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,615 ✭✭✭nachouser

"We doing a deal, a beautiful… with Keir Sutherland... he's the Prime Minister in England and I said if you want a deal we've gotta have free peaches… you gotta give us free peaches… beautiful, perfect free peaches… and Kiefer… Sir, he said, Sir you can have all the free peaches you want… so we're gonna go and deal and have free peaches… I'll sign the deal…"

Saw that, but what hit me the most was he said something along the lines of "When the rest of the world are starving, they'll come back to the table". He seemed to believe that all other countries were reliant on US farming exports to survive.

Looks like Trumps jackboot has the republican party representatives firmly stamped in place

“We are all afraid,” Lisa Murkowski ( Alaska Republican senator ) told Alaska nonprofit leaders on Wednesday, according to The Anchorage Daily News. “It’s quite a statement. But we are in a time and a place where I certainly have not been here before. And I’ll tell ya, I’m oftentimes very anxious myself about using my voice, because retaliation is real. And that’s not right.”

    https://www.huffpost.com/entry/lisa-murkowski-donald-trump_n_6800fb8ae4b027910a15d38f

I did hear elsewhere that the retaliation is threats to representative familys and also violent threats. Trump is definitely a Mafia Don owning & turning the US into one big crime syndicate.

Im still puzzled as to why its taking so long for the US Citizen to cop onto this and do something about it. Its almost as if the vast majority of the population are in denial, believing Oh No this is NOT happening in the USA.

And another thing - I hear some talking that the midterms in 2 years or an election in 4 years will sort this out. Dont think so, i think they only have weeks, maybe a few months to deal with this, not years.
