I think that's correct; certainly used to be the case anyways, I believe? Wasn't there something like SOB looking for a Provincial Contract instead of a CC as he could then manage his own image rights?

    By all accounts yes.

Maybe I misunderstood earlier, but the province paying 30/40% isn't altering any of that. It is just an internal allocation of funding.

That is also why the idea there was any legal issues involved is completely off base.

So basically the IRFU offers the central contract and negotiates the salary with the player, then deducts 40% of that from the direct salary allocation they give to the province to manage?

Or do they manage all the money and contracts themselves centrally?

Genuine question - if leinster aren't able to hold on to as many players in future due to changes in central contracting etc, leading to even more leinster players lining out for Munster, will this impact how fans view the team?

I don’t expect this to happen to any significant degree beyond what the current make-up of the squad is, tbh.

I’ve alway said you don’t want to dilute the identity of the Provinces.

And even tho the diverting of the 40% to player pathways will take some time to bear fruit, I don’t see there being any significant shift in the squad make-up, even in the short term. Munster have some very good young and academy players at the moment.

Was expecting a little bit more rotation. Good to see Lee Barron straight into the mix and Kilgallen back.

Yes, I thought we'd see more rotation but then again it's a game we need to win.

4 games left of the regular season with a weekend off in the middle because of Europe. The strongest available team will be named for each of those 4 games.

Didnt realise Barron had made the move already.

I wonder has he been training with Munster long?

I assume it's simply a case of the budget the IRFU allocate for provincial contracts will get diluted.

So essentially if leinster have 11 players on 500k and Munster have 1 then Leinster get 2.2m less in funding and Munster will get 200k less. This will likely have an impact on giving provincial contracts to some of their fringe academy players

Of course, the flip side to that is that leinster will still have 11 players on the central contracts vs Munsters 1

Yep, as niall said, both himself and Milne have joined up early, it seems in large part due to injuries.

Decent team but would have liked Gleeson starting 8. Good that Kilgallen is back. Will be a tough game with the team the Bulls have named.

Yes, especially after the ref getting a bit snarky with Kendellen two weeks ago.

Tough game ahead, but we really need a performance after last weekend and ideally a win.

Just hearing that Casey and POM are out of starting 15, casey with Illness. Murray and JOD start

Rory Scannells and Patterson onto the bench.

Super counter ruck from Tom Ahern there. Kleyn with some nice hands. Crowley looking sharp

Some errors so far by Munster but good intent so far. Serious pressure on the breakdown

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,387 ✭✭✭budhabob

Jager looked sparked there, seems to get his head on the wrong side of the tackle quite a bit

Apart from his missed touch, pass to grass and kick out on the full

You can dive over a ruck now?

I feel like I've seen that disallowed in the past.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 613 ✭✭✭darkened_scrum

I was also wondering about diving over a ruck, found WR issued a clarification in 2022 that what the Bulls did for their try is legal, as long as you're legitimately trying to score (which they obviously were, given they did in fact score).

    https://www.world.rugby/the-game/laws/clarification/2022/3/

In principle, in a try scoring situation, if the action is deemed to be a dive forward for a try, then it should be permitted. If a player is deemed to have left the ground to avoid a tackle; or to jump, or hurdle a potential tackler, then this is dangerous play and should be sanctioned accordingly.

SOB having some big plays so far, he's been a such a key signing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,387 ✭✭✭budhabob

What's Barron like on the basics? Know little about him other than he is supposedly dynamic

I'd read that as not relevant in this case. That's not diving forward, it's diving over players, and avoiding the tackle you'd meet if you picked and went. Still seems illegal to me.
