Don't over think it, there's nothing in it.

However, if important to you, Energia's system for reminding and entering manual meter readings is better, and the website is more easily navigated.

The Flogas urban & rural standing charges make no sense to me.

That's my thinking also. I just switched to Energia AXA 41% because I figured it would take a 20% price hike across D and N rates for the Energia plan to match Flogas BWG current rates, standing charges included. That doesn't seem very likely to me. But the calculations change if you consume more than 2K units per billing cycle. In the end, both are good plans and I could as well just have stayed with Flogas, but I must say that paying EUR 1 a day for standing charges is a bit of an insult for me.

You should have gotten an email with a link to renew

If you're on gmail it might have ended up in the Promotions folder instead of Inbox

Unfortunately I can't send you my link as it's personalised, you'd be signing me up to the BWG deal

I'm with Electric Ireland (ESB) 25 years, never changed. A few years back they installed a Smart Meter but I don't think I have signed up to any of their plans. Now I need a home EV charger installed for my 1st EV. Advice welcome, thank you

I didn't get any link sent via email, checked other folders etc

Probably need to call Flogas then and ask to renew. Tell them you got told about the renewal but never got the email

If you want the one line answer, sign up to the Energia AXA deal (there's a link back a page or two) and you're probably going to be fine

If you'd like a slightly longer answer, create an account with ESB Networks and download your smart meter data as a HDF file. Then upload to Energy Pal and see what it recommends

Make sure to select Day/Night plans since EP only shows smart plans by default

If you already have the EV then you can set the date range to whenever you started charging it. It's a very rough estimate but it should give you an idea

If you don't have the EV yet there's a few ways to estimate your usage, all of which are highly inaccurate 😁

First you can take your annual mileage and multiply by 0.2 to get your annual EV consumption. That's based on 200Wh/km which is pretty bad for a lot of EVs but is a useful ceiling of consumption

So say you drive 30,000km per year that'll give an extra 6,000kWh usage. Multiply that by your night rate and that's the added cost

If you want EnergyPal to factor in the EV usage then you need to work out what to add to each 30 minute interval for charging

    This formula should do it:

(EV usage kWh/365 days) / 7kW = nightly charging time in hours

Plugging in the 6000kWh above gives 2.35 hours of charging per night

Taking that, open up the usage editor and add 3.5kWh for each 30 minute interval from 2am until you hit the required hours. Scale the last 30 minutes to the decimal

    So we'd add the following

    2.00-2.30 +3.5kWh

    2.30-3.00 +3.5kWh

    3.00-3.30 +3.5kWh

    3.30-4.00 +3.5kWh

    4.00-4.30 +1.23kWh (3.5kWh * 0.35)

If I haven't lost you yet then that should make EP recommend a bunch of EV plans 😁

Why 2am? Because that's when all the cheapest EV rates kick in

I finally got off the bloody fence, I renewed with BWG (urban day/night meter)

    day rate: 26.49 (includes VAT)
    night rate: 13.35 (includes VAT)
    standing charge: 331 (includes VAT)
    fixed for 18 months

I asked the rep on the phone if there were any higher rates if you go above a certain number of units per billing cycle and she wasn't aware of any. (she didnt seem to have a clue what I was on about:)) Do flogas not charge for this scenario?

e.g. If you go above 3,000 DAY units in a 2 month bill, you get charged a higher rate etc

Yeah but it's like a cent more per unit for the excess - not worth worrying about too much.

anyone know the rate per kWh for micro gen on that AXA offer? I’ve searched high and low on their plans and it’s not displayed.

For folks moving to Energia and needing to decrease their level pay, you'll need to wait until the first bill is issued before you can do so

I was on to customer service and they tried manually generating a bill with meter readings, but it wasn't working for some reason

The agent said she'd try again in a few days and call back next week. They seem pretty good there to be fair

For some context, Energia calculated my level pay at €315 and I worked it out to €80 per month based on my usage for the past year

I had to tell their stupid calculator I live alone on a building site and it dropped to €185, still too high

I hate those level pay plans, I wouldn't bother, just put money into the account using your card each week or whenever it suits you.

i was on a gas bill - level pay plan a few years ago with Brod Gais, i was constantly in credit, and asked for a reduction twice, they refused, when i passed €500 in credit, and it was early summertime, so it would have been 7 to 800 in credit by Autumn, i asked one final time to reduce, they again refused and i left them the same day, and took the refund.

It might be handy for some users for budgeting cashflow, but i would never go near them.

Ive been with flogas over a year now and never had to submit a reading.

I see on the website when you login there is a place where you can submit your meter reading

Is there a time when you should submit readings?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,908 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Do you have a smart meter? If so then don't bother

If not, you can submit a reading once a month and they'll generate a bill from it. I found it handy for tracking usage since it's difficult to estimate from the 2 month bills sometimes

More of meter question. Dunno where the thread is for smart meters. When you get a smart meter installed it's there a day night one or does it matter. Currently on a 24 rate been waiting for a smart meter install for ages.

While currently only have a small battery EV is handy being able to plug it in any time and while it would charge in 3 hrs or so, I'd like a bigger window. Thinking day/night plan but do I need a different smart meter for that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,960 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Not the actual rates though. You would be better off quoting the VAT inclusive figures which push this plan up a bit.

Also @Stallingrad why did you choose the 34% discount over the AXA 41% discount?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,222 ✭✭✭obi604

I have a meter that looks like below. I don't think its a smart meter, but not an old school meter either

    image.png

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,908 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Yep, that's the non smart digital meter, it does the old 24-hour or Day/Night plans

Your meter code is probably MCC02 if you're on a day/night plan

In terms of meter readings, it's always sending in updated ones to your supplier and avoid the estimated readings. I think ESB guarantees 4 readings per year

    ah ok.

Yep, im on day/night and Flogas has never asked me to send in a reading. and I never see anyone calling to the house to take a reading, and now I know why. I didnt think this type meter communicated with supplier

I just got my written Flogas BWG plan renewal confirmation in the door. It states that the standing charge, PSO levy AND UNIT RATE are subject to change. It also specifically states that this applies to Fixed Energy Tariffs as well.

This is just the usual Flogas incompetence, right? And not a 'fixed' plan that is actually variable?

They never asked me either, I would just send in regular readings every month. Flogas will generate a bill every time you submit a reading which I thought was pretty handy
