I'm not sure if I'm the only one person here who gets conflicting messages when someone posts "fine" as a description of the weather but then go on to use other terms to describe the same type of weather such as "mostly cloudy", because they seem at odds with each other. I'm not directing these comments at any particular poster, BTW. Just using the most recent as an example.

Fine/clear on a met eireann report means the sky is clear or mostly clear with minimal cloud cover. I use the fine/clear description is such a case. If there a few clouds present (but still sunny more of the time than not), I'll describe it as partly cloudy. I think Met Eireann use the term "Fair" for the same thing so perhaps I should really do the same…..see, I may be just as guilty!!!! If more than half sky is covered in clouds, then it would be mostly cloudy....... And so on.

A person's judgement of the amount of clouds present above ones head can vary a bit with regards to what word or combination of words to use to describe it but using fine (or fine/clear) and mostly cloudy to describe the same weather phenomena is very confusing for me. Not sure if anyone is similar?

snowing this morning down to 600ft asl west of Arklow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,458 ✭✭✭highdef

Wow, snow falling below 200m ASL puts a fair few people in the snow category! Is that falling snow or lying snow? I'm guessing the former. Even so, that would mean snow may be falling at relatively low lying built up areas such as Blessington and Roundwood.

Falling snow,it wasn’t sticking except at about 350 to 400 metres

Wind was NW so blowing directly through lugnaquilla en route which would have helped

On the radar there looks to be some clearance coming from the South so hopefully we get some breaks in the rain. Miserable here in Rathdrum Wicklow, it's been raining since about 11pm last night.

The heavier of the rain isn't even due until tonight with UKMO and HARMONIE forecasting 35-45mm for the next 24 hours. Could be some flooding from this one, although river levels around here aren't high at the moment so it might just be more surface flooding.
