Ralston leaving due to lack of game time ? Very handy player, alongside prendergast the best defender at the club. Crazy Connacht are losing so many due to game time issues.Shame porch was let go on loan the need a 15 as Jennings doesn't have the kicking or positional awareness which is why the only offered 1 year extension. How crazy is it that Connacht have 4 good 9s but zero 10s sums up the issues. They overload in positions like wing and centre but no 15. Heard they offered the U20s 10 a academy spot

Hadnt seen anything about Ralston leaving, where is he going? He had been contracted to the end of next season I think.

With Porch, Smith and now Ralston leaving we have kind of gone from having an overload of back 3 players to the opposite. Ralston obviously played a good bit in the centre too

I think he's also out with a knee injury at the minute as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 473 ✭✭ShineyShiney

That would seem short sighted, hes a decent wing and a good 13. He's a better defender at this stage than all the options we have been trying there other than Piers.

Piers, Ralston, Smith, Porch, Cordero all leaving would leave us with just Jennings, Mullins, Mack and Bolton and Tracey stepping up to a full contract, as our full roster of back 3 players for next year. That's not going to work!

I really hope this doesn't mean Cordero is staying, nothing personal but it really hasn't worked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,559 ✭✭✭testtech05

Yeah Id agree with all of that plus I would imagine Cordero's wage would be much higher than most of the others listed. I still havent seen anything about Ralston being allowed to leave though, not sure where the OP heard it originally

I wouldn't pay any attention regarding Ralston leaving.

    Anyone can make up stories.

Ralston is under contract. Our back 3 for next season is looking quite lean so he will get minutes, I think his position in the depth chart is correct as he has the lowest ceiling of any of the options there.

Regarding fullback, apparently Edinburgh are deliberating whether to renew Bofelli or not. Would be an amazing signing for us, solving our 15 problem and our goalkicking problem in one fell swoop. There's also the potential there for a Henry McErlean or Ruben Moloney to come in and nail down a starting jersey very quickly should they be interested.

Boffelli would be a excellent addition if he came available

I saw him at the weekend and he had a fairly serious looking knee brace, so that tallies.

Byron listed as a long term injury (knee) last week.

Don't take much if any heed of that JD poster, well known stirrer across the internet .

Jim Demps flying a kite. He does that for a living. Probably hoping Ralston moves to Munster.

Porch and Andrew smith were under contract when they left. Andrew smith has already started more urc games for Munster than Ralston did for Connacht. Ralston didn't start any urc games for Connacht this season. So his plan is to sit out next season again and hope to get some challenge cup games? That will get him a great contract in his next club. What's the story with the Connacht hooker who is still under contract but playing in Romania? is he getting much game time?

It seems pretty bad… Our coaching set up is in a very bad shape right now…

The loss of Senekal can't be underestimated.

My main problem is that even if we found our best team setup we seem to be constantly changing it… JJ and Murphy this week and Ioane and Devine the week before… How can you play with that consistency…

I would have faith but we were the team that let Tom Farrell go last year… We loaned out Andrew Smith who was capulted on to the wing for Munster….

Carty is a complete mystery… He doesn't do well when you have a poor set up, he plays a lot on the edge but he has more of a tactical brain than our other tens and a better boot from hand…

So many players have disapproved by what looks like systems they either don't understand, not working or have little faith in… Generally Connacht was the team with good coaching and maybe not the talent or bulk all the time… We are definitely underperforming…

At the moment our attack seems to have improved and the scrum seems to be OK…

Our line out is a mess, Maul attack and defence is falling, Defence is a disaster..

Team selection seems confusing and the team seems to be frustrated too… I say communication is probably bad.

We are two years of looking at this now and we don't see improvement. I understand coaches need time, Pat Lamb barely won a game for the first 6 months…

We have the best attacking lineout and the 4th best defensive lineout in the URC.

Rumour mill says wilkins has left connacht with immediate effect

And now we have to start looking for a new head coach late in the season, the whole thing is in a shambles at the minute.

Best of luck to Wilkins. Any criticism posted was exclusively down to his professional skillset for the headcoach role but he always came across as a gentleman, even when it was all going to ****. Our poor performances and lack of belief are not solely on him but I think a change of coaching is badly needed.

This is good for all parties but hopefully we don't repeat mistakes and appoint Tucker "because he knows the setup". He hasn't done a good job in his brief caretaker tenure. Fresh eyes are needed.

Best of luck to him in the future. This was Willie Ruane’s fault more so than his and this outcome was entirely predictable, in fact many did predict it on here two years ago.

Not even running a competitive search for a provincial head coaching position was completely ridiculous and a terrible reflection on the leadership of Connacht Rugby. Hopefully lessons have been learned at least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,593 ✭✭✭FACECUTTR

It's not ideal but it was absolutely the right decision. Hopefully we can attract a quality coach and 1 or 2 marquee players to get things on the right foot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,559 ✭✭✭testtech05

I think from reading the article on the Connacht website it sounds like both parties are happy enough to call it quite. Hopefully Pete's health is OK, as others have said any criticism was of the team and his and others coaching nothing personal and he always came across as a nice guy trying his best unfortunately it hasnt worked out.

Anyone have any ideas who would be a realistic target for the job, any chance we could tempt Nigel Carolan back I wonder although I know he doesnt have head coaching experience

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 844 ✭✭✭RonnieL

I got the following message forwarded in a whatsapp group, so I have no idea if it's true "Connacht have already spoken to Noel McNamara apparently"…….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 2025Connacht

100%. Let's not forget that he was also responsible for the Kieran Keane debacle.

Keane was undoubtedly a knowledgeable rugby man but a bit of due diligence would have found he was not suited to the role.

All appointments are a gamble so you could forgive him that one but the 3 year deal for Wilkins was flagged up by all and sundry at the time as being a poor appointment. It's a surprise to no one that it has come to this.

As usual with statements like this it's all niceties and flowery language but behind the scenes you can be sure that Wilkins like Keane has been paid off with a healthy sum. Good luck to him as far as I'm concerned but that money ultimately impacts on our already limited budget.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,289 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Best of luck to Wilkins moving forward in his career, and most importantly with his health. I think he was done a disservice being surrounded with such an inexperienced staff on his first head coaching gig. I don't think it's a coincidence that we reached the URC semis when Friend was in situ as DoR, it must have been a lonely place once he had lost that experience to bounce ideas off.

The IRFU should be going all out for the right coach, even if it means running a thinner squad and relying more on the academy. There is a huge cohort of potential internationals in the squad, they need an environment that nurtures that talent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,864 ✭✭✭b.gud

Initially when I read this I was thinking wow that would be a great appointment, but then after thinking about it I'm not actually sure it would be. I kind of feel rather than a slick attack focused coach we need a hard nosed forward who can come in and give us a bit of the bite that we're missing as a group, a bit like Rowntree did in Munster. Seib seems like a coach who should be able to get the attack humming so not sure if adding McNamara as well would be redundant.

Having said that if he did end up being appointed I don't think I'd be disappointed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 2025Connacht

    From RTE:

Scrum coach Cullie Tucker will continue to lead the management team until the end of the season, while it is expected Australian Rod Seib will be the province's new head coach for next season.

The Brumbies assistant (below) was already confirmed to be joining Connacht as a "Senior Assistant Coach" for next season, though RTÉ Sport understands he is likely to be head coach.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,006 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

A bit odd in that he probably felt he was arriving as a senior coach only to be suddenly asked do you actually fancy being head coach? He might turn out to be good but I would have preferred if Connacht had conducted an actual head coach search. They didn't do it the last time. And looks like they are not going to do it again this time. Looks like taking the cheap option unfortunately.

I agree with you but this section from Wilson's message today means that maybe he was hired with a view to being head coach.

"During this season, I have been having some very open and honest discussions about my future at the club"

I felt like the "Senior assistant coach" title was a bit odd as I don't recall anyone else holding that title so this may have been planned throughout the season. Or I could be giving the branch too much credit and they're scrambling to sort out the coaching ticket for next season
