An interview with Delroy Lindo, who stars in Sinners (out at the moment) was played just now. You’ll know Lindo from movies like Devil’s Advocate, Ransom, and tv shows like The Good Fight etc. It clearly was pre-recorded - at one stage Ryan says we’ll take a break and rather than go to an ad break they went into a 3 song break - you’re not leaving a Hollywood actor wait around for 3 songs during an interview. The audio “cut” to said break was incredibly harsh, slicing Lindo mid-sentence.

There’s another giveaway towards the end of the interview where Lindo says something like “I’ve met so many people today to talk about the movie” which indicates this is one of those roll on, roll off interviews that actors do with a stream of seemingly endless critics/journalists/influencers to promote a film. You get 10mins with the star then off you go, and the next interviewer pops in. It’s standard promotional work for any film.

The sound/audio quality was also completely different to that of a studio setting.

Fair play to Ryan though, he found an Irish connection for a movie about African American people in the Deep South!

Lindo is a fantastic actor, it was nice to hear him being interviewed. If anything I’d have liked it to be longer!

The music information on screen v what’s actually being played is off again today. It displayed Alison Moyet “Love Resurrection” earlier when “Is this love” played, and there was a mix up with a Phil Collins song earlier too.

Ryan played The Stunning earlier - I’d genuinely like to know if they was aired in the UK? Though they had their moment here in the early 90s I can’t imagine many in Britain knowing them. Now I’m wondering if there’s a Q102 music list and a separate one for Virgin?

He’s not going to get many big stars live. He’s just not. In the U.K. market his show is way way down the priority list of anyone promoting a new movie, show or album etc.

Anyway I would think prerecording and editing would suit trying to improve the show which obviously given Tubridy’s rather limited ability to adapt to the format of his employer, would be one way of trying to hammer the square peg into the round hole so to speak

by this I mean if he can’t get 15 minutes of meaningful content live it might be better to record 30 minutes and try to get something better with a 15 minute edit

I understand the point you’re making but even the editing was awful - saying they’re going to a break and cutting Lindo off mid-sentence for example. if they’re going to do that at least be slick and polished when doing it.

I’ve used the square peg round hole analogy myself when describing the fit. Tubridy isn’t the problem, there’s too much music on the show imo. I personally would rather have had Lindo and Ryan talk for an hour this morning than 10 minutes interrupted by Dexy’s Midnight Runners and Benson Boone (or whatever was played, I can’t remember exactly).

News UK’s technical standards are woeful. Try listening to some of the stuff they put out on Times Radio where presenters are allowed to work remotely without even applying the basics of sound quality like damping down the echo in the room they are sitting in. Wouldn’t be allowed by Global or Bauer. Even a minnow like Boom Radio can get it right but it’s run by professionals.

Just to highlight a few things as regarding the technical  presentation of the simulcast. These are observations along with some recommendations as opposed to full on criticisms.

Yes, I believe most of the interviews are pre-recorded and I must agree with Peter Dragon that there is room for improvement in terms of their production/engineering and how they are placed within the radio stations format clock. Firstly they should not package interviews and present them as being 'live' if they are pre-recorded. Secondly the listener does not care if the interview was conducted yesterday or within the past week, rather they would be more interested in the overall quality and it's content but Virgin Radio should be open and more transparent regarding the timing of the interview. Peter raised a very good point about breaking the interview to play a song from their regular playout. I couldn't agree more, as part of the format for the show the interview segments are specifically placed across the bottom of the hour and they should be partitioned from the regular music presentation - Do the interview and present it in one segment.

This is my concern. The Ryan Tubridy Show is supposed to be a 'Live' simulcast and not a regular syndicated type radio program which can go out at different times on multiple radio stations and be somewhat tailored to those affiliated radio stations.

When the show first went on air, all of Tubridy's links were live. They now appear to be starting the process of recording individual links, editing them for the appropriate radio station and insterting them into the playout system to be played at predetermined times. It is a form of voice tracking that is creeping into what was supposed to be a fully live broadcast. A clear example today was when Tubridy chatted with Angela Scanlon at approx 12:45 pm as she is currently sitting in for Jane Middelemiss. The link went out on Virgin Radio and Q102 simultaneously but the Q102 link was edited to remove any references to Virgin Radio and some small talk relating to Tubridy being off again this coming Friday. In other words the link was pre-recorded. When this becomes the acceptable standard and not only if but when the listener becomes aware of it they will question what parts of the broadcast is 'Live'. Is any of it 'Live'? Is the presenter even there?

Overall in the long term this may not benefit the shows listeners or add to the genuine experience of live radio. It will only serve the presenter, radio station logistics and will permit the presenter to focus and provide resources to his side projects etc.

’this a strange day indeed when nonetheless is agreeing with me….

Thanks for the more technical explanations of what I’m hearing though - every day is a school day and all that! It’s interesting.

A hypothetical question if I may related to above - could the show (or indeed the whole week’s show) voice links be recorded in one session? I’d estimate Ryan talks as little as 10-15minutes some days - could these snippets be recorded with for example separate Virgin and Q taglines and then played throughout the day/week on those stations with hypothetically completely different playlists in London and Dublin so that you’d have a more “on brand” musical selection for each station? I can’t see how it’s not possible….would save time for most of the staff too. Like Ryan could record a day’s worth of links in 20 minutes (allowing for out takes too) or a week’s worth of links in a couple of hours then have the rest of the week off while a producer runs the show off a computer in his absence with different playlists for “Éire” and Britain?

    Hope I’ve explained that properly!

Tubridy could easily record all the links in a single day but then it would sound stale as it wouldn’t react to anything happening in the news, the weather etc

I can’t see any mainstream station recording a daytime show in advance. Steve Wright used to pre record large sections on his Radio 2 show but was always there when they played out meaning he often worked 9-5 for a show that went out from 2-5

A simple answer to your question - Yes. All that you have mentioned or suggested could be done but then it becomes no longer a live simulcast, it becomes a syndicated radio program that is put out on 2 different radio stations at the same time and as @GSF has pointed out the overall sound and feel of the show would sound way too overpolished and stale. It must be remembered that NewsUK signed up Tubridy for a live mid morning show. If they were going to go down the road of fully voice tracking it, they would be better off getting in a genuine music jock and do that slot 'Live' as it's supposed to be a music station.

He rarely if ever reacts to anything after the news reports though.

On Monday he will tell us about things he did over the weekend, and on Friday he will usually say something about what he’s doing at the weekend - but not always - for example he didn’t mention the Kellie Harrington thing until after it had occurred or mention his show was in Dublin on that particular Friday.

With all of that in mind he could easily record Tuesday - Thursday’s links in one session - which for me is an argument to give him more talking time or a full on chat show and seriously cut back on the music.

Tubridy presumably went to News U.K. as they were the only one willing to offer him a job on air at a station he deemed respectable enough for his status. If he doesn’t like or can’t fit into what is required of the job he can always leave and go elsewhere the same as the rest us can if we don’t like what our employers have asked us to do in a role

In fairness to RTÉ News (What you RoTelly in fairness to RTÉ) they will state both on Radio and TV … "Early I spoke with … "

What does it tell you when you remove genuine music jocks from your main station, replace a very experienced one with an extremely inexperienced overrated one, put the experienced one on a sister station which then shows a significant increase in performance whilst your main station tanks?

What does it tell you when your main station uses it's sister stations to raise the performance profile of your network?

It will be interesting to see what NewsUK's response will be if the next set of RAJAR's show a further slide in listenership figures for Virgin Radio.

I suspect you’ll be eating your hat as I think Ryan will absolutely smash those numbers - both in the UK and Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,050 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

Bad start today, I clicked to listen to the show online on the q website at 10 and catch the news before the show and we’ve had 3 (3!!!) digital scrambling noises into complete stop already! Had to refresh 3 times but hopefully the show will be ok. I don’t know the technical reasons for these issues - can any of the more knowledgable thread members explain this? It’s obviously not Ryan’s fault, but it is a really bad look for q on what is their flagship show.

I’ve noticed recently Ryan is saying he’s broadcasting from the “top o the tower”, I assume this is a play on “top o the morning to ya”. I find this a bit cringe tbh. Ryan sounds positively chipper today though, very upbeat despite the grey skies in London Town today,

1st song of the day and already the RDS is out - No Doubt’s “Just a Girl” is playing but on screen it says “Don’t Speak”. If one is listening on a regular radio this wouldn’t be an issue seeing it online just says that there is a real lack of attention to detail from a production point of view on the station. Again, this is not on Ryan, but it reflects badly on the station IMO. They surely must be aware of this issue at this stage?

I think that Tubs would make a fine movie critic. He gives out brilliant recommendations for films and TV series. Has just given the imprimatur to Chris O'Dowd. Called his performance in Black Mirror "the finest of his career". Also did a wonderful impression of Emma Corrin's upper class English accent, called out the clipped tones of her accent. He seems to have an encyclopedic knowledge of world cinema and TV.

Another recommendation now, you need to watch Bridesmaids.

Hmm. He’s just admitted to not knowing who actor turned film director Paul Feig is - who he met yesterday, presumably for a pre-recorded interview. 🤷‍♂️

I find Ryan’s film recommendations very mainstream and middle of the road. I’d expect a film critic to have a deep knowledge of cinema which I don’t think Ryan possesses. I don’t mind middle of the road background music like the show has, but I’d like to think I’m a little more discerning with my cinematic choices.

The technical issues continue - they just looped most of the snippet of the interview with Feig. Today is a hard listen tbh with all these technical issues.

I enjoy his recommendations and have often come across a few hidden gems because of him. And if it involves promoting Irish actors then it even better. He has been very supportive of the likes of Paul, Barry and Saoirse. He's trying to promote Irish talent working in the UK and Hollywood. He has just recommended the old Agatha Christie films now.

Yes, I caught that. To be fair he does promote Ireland all the time, even if I do find he hams it up a bit on occasion.

I'm listening on the app on my phone and the sound keeps dropping off. Is anyone else having this problem? He was in the middle of telling a story about a trip to the cinema and I missed the end.

There seems to be constant technical issues with the digital feed be it on the app or the website, but today is particularly bad for some reason. It died on the web feed at the same time. I have a Conf. Call at 11:30 so I haven’t rejoined the feed but I hope the quality is better when I return later.

I would recommend listening to the stream via Virgin Radio.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 455 ✭✭nonetheless

During the simulcast the music playout is coming from London. Q102's playout system is not in sync with it and is also loading incorrect and irrelevant music track data to RDS that is out of sync from what is being played. This is a specific problem on the Q102 end. In terms of the chronological timing of music tracks the VRUK side is more reliable and reflective of what is happening in real time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 455 ✭✭nonetheless

For example the master feed (VRUK) was playing Stereophonics "Pick A Part That's New" and that is what is heard on Q102. However, Q102's playout has been loaded up with Stereophonics "Maybe Tomorrow". What's coming from VRUK is accurate and that is what you are hearing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 455 ✭✭nonetheless

His link pre Prince's "When Doves Cry" at approx 12:52 pm was pre-recorded ref Angela Scanlon. On Q102 - no link, it goes to a jingle.

The track is especially picked because it has a music intro for a set period of time before the vocal. This allows for a pre recorded link to be inserted on intro that is timed not to walk over the vocal.

Fair. It’s just reflex on my part to think of Q rather than Virgin I guess, plus I’d rather support local where I can. Will make a more conscious effort to think of the mother station in future. What in your opinion of the cause of the non-RDS issues that we had this morning though on Q’s end?

Hadn’t heard that term “walk over the vocal” before - thanks for that - every day’s a school day!
