I wonder are any of the weekend shows produced in studios outside of RTE - such as Al Dunne, Dave Fanning, John Connelly ??. If they are, would the RTE music files still be used ? Dave Fanning and John Connelly play some obscure tracks (John plays some 12" mixes from compilations he refers to, Dave plays album tracks of someone like nick cave) not normally heard on Gold and may not be in RTEs computer playout system.

Assuming Micky Mac records his 70s show in RTE Limerick?

Just wondering the technical side of these weekend shows that are presented by those who wouldn't have any business being in RTE studios (e.g.: for weekday shows).

I was listening to John Connolly this evening with his ABC to XTC show. He thanked Amanda Farrelly for the previous three hours. The problem is that I happen to know that she was not presenting the afternoon show as I caught the last 20 minutes of it and the presenter was Erik Threlfall! This is the problem with pre-recorded or voice tracked programs.

Erik Threlfall has been doing that show a lot recently. Does it equally well as Amanda in fairness. Not just the usual 3 hours of Now 80s hits like you’d get elsewhere

Gold putting Dave Fanning on nightly now from 6-8pm from today. Long time coming as I thought this was in the plan for over a year. It would be a full schedule except Carol Moran is off and replaced by automation

great news - looks like his saturday show remains..

Will these nightly shows be live ?

I wonder will Dave delve into the archives of his shows on Radio 2 / 2FM and play some old interview/sessions ?

12 hours of Fanning on RTE GOLD !!!!

Yes rick promoting it but not saying hes live. Must be doing his links then autotrack playing music. I dont think dave is rte staff despite all the years service so probably just doing it for a few auld shillings unless im wrong

Fanning is 69 so presumably he’s doing something similar to Ronan Collins. Collins is doing 15 hours a week, Fanning will be doing 12. Presumably he will record them all in a single day

last nights 1st song was The Maverick’s- National Express so it’s seems like the standard playlist

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,870 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

you mean The Divine Comedy ?? In fact the first 3 songs on his Monday show were The Divine Comedy.

It's not a standard RTE Gold playlist - it is Dave's usual Rock and Indie.

yes sorry. Don’t know I keep mixing those 2 up in my head.

Didn’t get a chance to listen beyond the 1st song to his show and didn’t get a chance to listen yesterday either. I’m guessing it’s done in a similar way to Ronan Collins show - a few features, a lot of songs back to back and a few long links in between these music sets?

Have you heard "Dance the Night Away" by Divine Comedy? What a tune.

It's great that there are presenters up til 8pm now daily.

Rick, Carol, Dave, it's a good mix for the afternoon/evening.

I'd love if there was a later slot as well, something similar to Late Date on RTE1, but I can always just listen to Late Date on RTE1 😀

will Dave Fanning actually decrease the audience? a lot of those travelling home at that time probably were used to the generic mix of the autoplayer and not the genre he "plays". i listened but probably not for me tbh.

I’d be the same. Not questioning his pedigree but I’d prefer Drivetime til 7 and not Fanning at 6pm

    Same here .

I have a problem with the XTC slot as well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,870 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

Dave would be MUCH better suited to 8pm to 10pm (like his Rock Show mostly was on 2FM), though my guess is that RTE Radio don't want the similar enough audiences diverting from John Kelly on Lyric or John Creedon on Radio 1.

    Rick sounds voicetracked today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,937 ✭✭✭GSF

wouldn’t be surprised if everything from 9am onwards was. The tell was probably the emergency tape kicking in.

Erik is is for Amanda again on the "All 80s Saturday" - as he is an 80s music aficionado he plays a much better selection.

I am listening to ABC to XTC on the player and John Connolly has done it again. He thanked Amanda Farrelly for All 80s Saturday, and even complimented her on her selection!! At least he is playing the sublime and rarely played You Did Cut Me by the under-rated China Crisis, so I cannot be too hard on him.

Erik is in for Amanda again on "All 80s Saturday" playing the brilliant Ofra Haza - Im Nin'Alu (where else would you hear this on Irish radio in 2025)

On a side note, I wonder will any of the Gold presenters take up the RTE redundancy later this year and will there need to be a re-shuffle of schedule ?

I would doubt that many of the presenters are staffers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,870 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

I would be fairly certain that Aidan, Will, Rick, Michael Cahill, Amanda, Erik Threlfall and Carol Moran are RTE staffers.

Slagging off Con Can..... I beg your pardon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,870 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

I thought the same when John C said it just there - it wouldn't sound out of place on ABC to XTC and by the way it's Kon Kan !!

Why is there no track info on RTE Gold when most other Internet stations have this ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,824 ✭✭✭Glaceon

At one stage, the Radioplayer app had live track info when nothing else did. But I just tried it now and it didn't.

listening to the top 100 piano songs from last Monday. Not a bad list. Bit obvious having Billy Joel, Queen and Elton John at the top of the list but I suppose the positions don’t really matter, it’s a list of 100 songs that could be in any order. Only one Ray Charles song though! On the plus side no bloody Oasis
