When they say this league has been terrible and we are the worst winners since Leicester, we have more points now than United finished on in 96/97 when they won it. If we win our next match we will have more than Arsenal in 97/98 and will match the United treble team in 98/99 with 79 points.

20 titles now + 6 European Cups. The most successful English team ever. LFC. The only answer to the obvious envy

Liverpool double United's points now. Was thinking if Newcastle slipped up, their champions league position might be in doubt, and Isak's preference for next season

Never in their best and our worst seasons 1992/93 to 2012/13 were we half their points at this stage of a season and I think 8th was the lowest we finished.

We're not winning the league because our football is less exciting.

Really is nuts how the season has gone… like, Champions League qualification and, particularly, 2 points per game was my target for the season. I'd have been happy out with that. Even if we lose every single game from here on, we'll still finish with 2ppg. Wild.

And 1 more than Utd and Spurs combined!

It's weird, performances have not been as good as we would like, and it's felt like a struggle these last few weeks, but it's cost us very little in the league. And I don't just mean 'cos Arsenal are dropping points and not catching us, I mean 'cos we haven't dropped many points ourselves!

Since the last two games where I feel like we played really well (Man City and then Newcastle at the end of Feb), we've only dropped points in one league game, the loss to Fulham. True, due to a quirk in the schedule and the Villa game being moved to Feb, we've only actually played 4 league games since the end of Feb, but we've won 3 and lost 1. 9 points from 12 is hardly dropping off a cliff.

The performances haven't been great sometimes (and that has cost us in the League Cup and Champions League), but the points return in the league itself is still fairly consistent, and our PPG in the last 4 games is pretty consistent with our season.

Edit: Got the maths a little wrong, sorry!

Imagine what it could have been like if we'd gotten Amorim instead of Slot!

That said, I'm still not sure what type of manager Slot is, but taking home a title buys him a lot of time to find out.

I don't think that's a fair comparison. Slot got a good squad and amorin got dross.

True but Amorim seems to be a 1 trick pony. Admittedly it's a good trick with the right squad, but Slot has shown some adaptability. He could still use a few different squad options every now and again to keep the first 11 fresh though.

That’s true but Amorim hasn’t improved them at all.

Klopp had a rubbish squad when he joined but you could see definite improvements within months

I have no idea why United form part of any discussion on here these days. Irrelevant.

We dodged a bullet with Amorin. Remember, by all accounts he was in the box seat for the job, but Liverpool delayed a little and he tried to force their hand with (was it) West Ham? This seemed to harden Liverpools stance and they said 'nah' and moved on, and Slot was brought in a time later.

Armorin seems to have a huge sense of his own greatness, but he's not backing it up. It's a match made in heaven at present 😁

It makes not the slightest bit of difference whether u win the league by 40 points or goal difference.

    You still win the league.

The team ive supported for over 40 years are on the verge of doing so for the 20th time.

Mind u it would be awfully nice if we could wrap it up asap. Just for my nerves if nothing else.

But no one saw this coming at start of season.

We are soon to be champions so let all those who begrudge us be. Let them off. ignore them.

6 points is all thats needed now. 😀

No matter how poorly we look, Chiesa never plays

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,364 ✭✭✭jasonb

Couldn't agree more. Not only the 20th, but the first in 5 years, and the 2nd in 35 years! And even I, one of the most pessimistic/anxious fans out there, am no longer nervous about it. 6 points from 6 games is all we need, and I don't think we even need 6 points, I think Arsenal will stick to their average and hit around 76 points for the season. It's a matter of when, not if, we are Champions.

The problem they have and what we would have had if we had decided to go with Amorim, you need to spend a lot of money to buy the squad that is able to compete with the way he likes to play. It is a risk they took as the payoff if it works will be big as he is a good manager, but if it does not work and you bought players to suit him you are stuck in the same position as a new manager will have players that does not suit his system.

I have no problem discussing other teams, they affect us in some way and when it comes to United they are our biggest rival, whether they are close to us on the table or not.

The situation today meant he was never going to be called upon when we used 2 subs on defenders. Hopefully he will have lots of chances in the last few weeks when the title is wrapped up already and it will not matter if we lose a match.

Slot also got a squad that largely suits the way he plays already, whereas Amorim got a squad that really wasn't assembled to play his tactics and formation.

Now, one would think a big part of hiring a manager is to get someone suited to your club, so questions really have to be asked of the Utd board's decision making, while Liverpool's deserve a lot of credit for finding someone who was such a good fit already.

If Slot is like me playing Championship Manager then this is 100% what will happen.

Particularly when everyone we try at CF looks poor enough… Jota again today was fairly anonymous. If you slip Mo central, Chiesa's an easy call on the right. And it's a game changer if it works.

Mo's only had one fairly brief spell for about 2 months when he played central week in week out, back around November/December 2018 I think, and he monstered it with nearly a goal a game.

<edit> just checked - he got 11 goals and 6 assists at centre forward in 12 games at centre forward back then.

Wouldn't be too worried about the bull been spoken about the worst league since Leicester won it,as mentioned above no Matter how it's won league title is all that matters ,and would the other fans worry how their team won a league title I don't think so let's enjoy it now ladies and gentlemen and as the saying goes f##k the begrudgers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,928 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

Is there anyone at the club with a longer contract than Chiesa, why do that, unless it's purely to make a buck, play him, lets see what he can do, or not do.

There was no evidence that Amorim was ever the club's preferred option. According to Hughes, Michael Edwards had a list of 5 candidates that the club's analysts had selected. When Edwards spoke to Hughes in January to get his recommendations for potential candidates, his first choice was Arne Slot. Slot was also the first name on the list that Edwards had.

The media speculation about who was going to be the next manager was well wide of the mark. Alonso was never in the running, his agent contacted the club to let them know he would be remaining at Leverkusen as soon as the speculation began.

Slot said that Klopp had spoken to him about taking the job in March. He had also requested videos of recent games to determine how compatible the style of play was with his own. The club sent him the first 20 league games of the season which gives some idea of when contact may have been initiated. Liverpool were in the process of finalising the agreement with Feyenoord when the story broke about Amorim having travelled to London at the end of April.

In all likelihood Amorim already knew that he wasn't getting an offer from Liverpool at that point.
