So should we sign up to the smart meter version of the BWG offer.. seems better deal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 891 ✭✭✭POBox19

I did, no price change from April 24 to October 26.

Slightly off-topic, how do you get joint names on an Energia account? I can't see the option online and want to sign up for the Axa offer.

Does anyone have the link to the bwg smart D/N offer as I can’t find it on the Flogas website. Thanks in advance.

To be honest, I found it hard to decide on this myself. I decided to stick with the non smart plan, as I worked out that given my usage it would only cost an extra €30 versus the smart plan, so I thought it was worth it to keep my options open come renewal time in 18 months, see what the market looks like then.

Having said that, I came very close to going smart, so if you do/did, I'd say it should be fine too. I'd say most likely I'll go smart next time around.

BWG new rate V Energia AXA. Urban standard day/night nightsaver meter

Energia axa rate is working out as 217 Euro cheaper over 1 year based on my last years usage.

Is it best to go with Energia AXA - even though not fixed rates, whereas BWG is fixed rates for 18 months

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,582 ✭✭✭bren2001

Thats a decision for yourself. If you think rates are going to increase over the next 18 months, then BWG might make more sense. If you don't think the rates are going to increase (or not increase enough to close the differential) then Energia may make sense.

Personally, I prefer the peace of mind and I know what I am paying for the next 18 months. Others prefer the gamble.

I renewed via the Fogas BWG link on the 1st of April and haven't heard/seen anything since, except for the application of renewal email immediately afterwards.

Did anyone get any more communication after renewing?

Your welcome letter with your account details will be issued via email in the next 14 days. There is no need to contact us during this time, we will be in touch should we require any additional information.

Even though they say that, I don't think I've ever gotten anything from any of them before the 14 day 'cooling-off' period ends.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

flo gas are brutal for communication, when we switched last year i didn't know if the switch had even gone through until 3 weeks later and then a bill followed a week after that

Was in a similar dilemma myself and went with Energia variable over Flogas fixed. I added on a 12% price increase to Energia to bake in an inevitable price increase and their annual cost for my low usage still came out on top by about a €75 a year saving. Id need a total of about 27% of price increases for it to close the gap to Flogas and while I do think their rates will go up during the contract I dont see it happening by that much, I think 10-12% is more in line with what we will likely see. The kicker for me was the Flogas €331 standing charge whereas I got the standing charge from Energia for €236 and then €75 cashback on top as well. It made the annual cost worth sucking up a price increase for my usage.

The good news is Electric Ireland said two weeks ago they are not putting up their rates (unlike SSE Airtricity who are). Energia have made no comment but they usually price themselves a bit less than Electric Ireland so I think the Energia prices we have now will last the summer and the increase will take place in September or October once other companies go for it. If I get 5 or 6 months out of the current rates I'll still be a good bit ahead of the Flogas deal and will be happy enough.

    Thank you!!

yeah for me, if Energia AXA rates were to increase the prices by 11%, that would work out the same as flogas deal

I wasn't aware of the 75 euro cashback with energia, does everyone get this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,768 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

no, it is a specific plan and Im activating the smart meter to get it. Its called Smart Data 28% discount with €75 cashback, for my usage it came out the cheapest on Energy Pal.

The main thing as a low user is to get a cheap standing charge even if the unit rate is slightly higher. In this case the standing charge is €95 cheaper on Energia than Flogas while the unit rates are just 1-1.2c higher. So with the €75 cashback thrown in I'll save over the year.

In your case if an 11% increase will work out the same as staying with Flogas then it might be worth your while staying with them as I would expect at least one increase in the order of 10-12% from Energia. I can suck two of those up and still be ahead but for your usage its one and done. The Flogas price is fixed for 18 months so you'd likely be better off staying with them as Energia will increase and if they do it twice in 18 months then you'll be behind overall.

Can you give me an indication of how many kwh you use per year. I only use 1800kwh. I changed to flogas but maybe it wasn't the best idea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,184 ✭✭✭obi604

    I use about 11,000 kWh per year, but >65% is on night rate . 2 x Ev's

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,582 ✭✭✭bren2001

at 1,800, your usage is so low I’d hardly give who I’m with much of a thought.

    I use around 3,600 units a year.

In fairness, FloGas's communication regarding their exciting office move was exemplary.

Signed up for energia 33% in Feb. Recon I can get the AXA 41% by ringing up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,798 ✭✭✭John arse

No they don't allow that but you could give it a go if you want???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 257 ✭✭Heiser

I've been BWG dual fuel but have now opted to go for Energia Axa Smart electricity and BWG for Gas, to lock that nice Gas rate in and get the 2 Emerald Park tickets.

There was too much of a saving not to go with Energia for electricity, and even if prices increase by 10% I should still be better off .

Changed from BGE to Flogas 18mth 24hr last Friday. Only downloaded last bill from BGE last night, only used 924 KWh in last 12 months, just worked it out,, with the SC €300.91 Energia & €313.89 Flogas, 23.61c Energia & 24.03c Flogas, the difference on total is negligible, €16.86 over 12 months, with the assurance of fixed rate for 18 mths on Flogas.

2.5kwh per day, have you got solar? If not you should change your username to Bob Cratchit 😛

So I switched from the off BWG plan to the new dual fuel non smart plan over a week ago and have heard nothing....apart from a very basic acknowledgement email.

Same here (Elec only). Not worried though as going by this thread Flogas is woeful at communications, so will give it a couple of weeks
