It's not possible that Switch 2 carts are pretty much the same as Switch carts. Switch carts cannot do the read speeds required. It's the same reason why current microSD cards are not compatible and it needs the SD Express format. The only thing the same between Switch 2 and Switch carts is the physical dimensions of the cart. It's like a CD and a Blu-ray Disc. Same shape, very different otherwise.

Good explainer here on reddit also about SD Express.

Just heads up. Smyths have pre-orders running again.

If Switch 2 carts are faster / more storage surely they wouldn't have Switch 1 versions on them with a voucher for upgrade.

    Are articles from mynintendonews clickbait?

Switch 2 Edition games are not Switch 2 (exclusive) games. Think of them more like Switch games with DLC that you can only play on Switch 2. Like how Mario Kart 8 on Switch is just Mario Kart 8 from Wii U but with added DLC. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is kind of like a Switch Edition Wii U game.

Switch 2 edition games are Switch carts and means you can still use them in a Switch but if you want to play the enhancements then you need to pop it in a Switch 2. You get faster loading in Botw / Totk on Switch 2 from the increase in amount and speed system memory (RAM) as well as the more powerful CPU/GPU.

And be wary of prices that seem too good to be true on sites like eBay, etc. Would be very easy to take a regular microSD card to print the word "express" on it. I would not advise buying outside of reputable retailers for these cards, especially at the beginning.

Upgrade packs for BOTW and TOTK will be USD$9.99. No word on regional pricing yet but $9.99 would be €9.13 (as of today) so I'd expect the packs to be €9.99 each in Eurozone.

Or, they're included in NSO + Expansion subscription if you have it.

So if you buy a switch 2 edition of a game, install it and then loan the game card to a friend, they can only access the switch 1 version?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 146 ✭✭ThePandazorian

We actually have not confirmation on that as far as I know. If it's a paper code for the upgrade pack then no, your friend will not have access to the upgrade. If it's a 'game key' style thing embedded in the Switch 1 cart, then perhaps.

In a similar vein, I've also been curious how DLC works when using Games Sharing and the Virtual Game Cards. If I share my digital copy to someone, do they get the DLC shared or not? Currently I don't think we have an answer to that at this time.

Defiantly. SD cards have long been notorious for fakes in circulation, even off Amazon. Forget ebay altogether.

TBH the 256GB onboard storage should mean most peeps wont need to get one for a while yet.

Does anyone think they should have kept the 720p screen and made the console a little cheaper? Will we really notice the jump to 1080p on such a small screen?

I would be less worried about resolution (720p is mostly fine for handheld, though 1080p will be nice) than I would be 120hz / VRR support and HDR - more than happy for those to be standard features even if it drives up the price a bit, as they’ll make a big difference to overall screen quality (though still a shame no OLED model is available at launch).

Switch screen is pretty weak so glad they’re meaningfully upgrading it here.

I can definitely see them repeating the Switch 1 hardware refreshes in the next few years. An OLED version and Lite version.

I would say the screen specs of Switch 2 make an OLED edition slightly less ‘necessary’, assuming it actually holds up to scrutiny when we see it in action. OLED is still the best, but this seems to have most of the features other than the perfect black levels.

But would still prefer an OLED option at launch, as it would still be my preference if the choice was there.

Not saying this is the case, but there does come a point with tech where "lesser" tech might actually be more expensive. It is plausible that ordering millions of 7.9 inch 720p resolution LCD screens could be more expensive than ordering millions of 1080p resolution screens because the former is no longer as mass produced as the latter now.

My Nintendo Store reveals official Switch 2 camera is 1080p and Hori Piranha Plant camera is 480p

Way to dampen the interest in the Hori Piranha Plant camera. It's a shame because it's a really cool design.

Have they mentioned if the Switch 2 will support Bluetooth headphones?

you know what, I've been thinking of the Switch 2 price and I don't think it's all that bad.

You can get the Switch2 with MKW world for about €500.

I remember in March 2017, I walked into Smyths and dropped €400 on the Switch and BOTW. So €100 of a difference, 8 years later and much more powerful hardware, and fully backwards compat.

Also, my wages were garbage back then and are much better now.

You probably paid the same again in joycon replacements/repairs 😁

Looks like anyone Stateside might get console pre-order news. Trump has climbed back up his own hoop with his tarrifs (except for China).

70 blips for the Gamecube controller

    Keep them bargains coming Nintendo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 153 ✭✭GreyAlien

Worse still, you need to have pre-ordered the Switch 2 directly from Nintendo, to even have the privilege of spending that money for one. Invite only.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,723 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

Not here, invite should be enough.

Must be mad, considering they lost a couple NES ones years ago on me, but like a sucker, stuck myself down for a couple.

On a quick scan compared to Smyths, the charging grip is the only saving.

I have an 8BitDo Bluetooth adapter that allows me to connect my original Gamecube controller to the Switch (it is treated like a Pro Controller). I'm hoping that will work with Switch 2 rather than having to buy the new NSO one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,940 ✭✭✭The_B_Man

So the DLC isn't included with BOTW Switch 2 edition. I'm just wondering if the fact that I've paid for the DLC on Switch already, will it follow over to Switch 2.

So upgrading for the tenner or so will unlock the full game + DLC.

I think it would be lousy for someone with the DLC to have to upgrade and then buy the DLC a 2nd time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,364 ✭✭✭jj880

From what Ive read you will not have to buy the DLC again. Think of the Switch 2 upgrade as another DLC that upgrades everything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,773 ✭✭✭smokingman

I heard in a video that there will be a hdmi cable in the Switch 2 box as the ones used for the first one won't be compatible.

Anyone else know if this is actually confirmed?

I'm guessing you've heard this too.

GameCube controller for Nintendo Switch 2 seemingly won’t work outside of Classics

That's got to be an error. It would seem ridiculous to deliberately limit its use.
