I dont know where else to post this so posting it here,

Hoping I can get some answers here…

I was contacted by someone I dont know on facebook accusing me of writing nasty comments about them anonymously on a facebook group that we're both members of, its a community page were people post old and recent pictures of locals and the community, apparently I left some comments under a photo of this person. I had no knowledge of this person or the comments and when I went to look on the page I was blocked. I contacted the page admin who didnt believe me that I have nothing to do with the comments, he said he can see the anonymous profile they came from is my page and sent a screenshot, which did in fact show my page. These comments have nothing to do with me, I dont know any of the people involved in this. The person who contacted me sent me screen shots of the comments and theyre horrific! I would never in a million years post anything like that or say something so awful to anyone. I had no notifications about this post, the comments understandably had lots of angry replies and reactions but no notifications were sent to me, I checked my activity log and theres nothing there to say the comments came from my profile so im sure I havnt been hacked. If someone did log into my facebook I would get an email notification.

Ive tried to contact facebook about it but I cant get any reply, its impossible to speak to an actual person.

Has anyone heard of this happening before? Ive googled it but cant find anything.

Stay well away from Facebook when you've drink taken.

    Lesson learnt.

Are you part of that group that concocts stuff for boards/reddit, hoping for a reaction?

A woman who is the gf? of someone I had a one-night stand with 27 or 28 years ago has been looking at my Facebook. I happened to ask a friend did they knew who she was, and she made the connection very odd. Maybe there was a bit of drink involved on her part.

So this anonymous comment wasn't anonymous. Drama seems to seek you out, doesn't it?

    page admin falsified it all.

Anonymous comments are never really anonymous as the admin of the page can see who posted the comment. Drama doesnt usually seek me out but in this case it has and I wish it hadnt.

I dont think so, if it was a clone page then two profiles under my name would have shown as members in the group.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,451 ✭✭✭Airyfairy12

I dont think they did, they were really angry at me…

Leave face book, it's only doing you harm.

No definitely not, the time on the comments showed they were posted at 4 in the morning, I was at home asleep at that time with my phone and laptop. The only thing I can think of is a facebook glitch wrongly flagging my account as the anonymous one? I cant get in contact with facebook to sort it out. What if the person took legal action against me for defamation? Imagine if the comment was under a post of someone I knew like a colleague, friend or family member?!

I use facebook to keep in contact with friends and family, many of them living all over the world. I shouldn't have to leave facebook because someones horrible comment got pinned on my account.

When something like this happens maybe changing log in details and change email address.

I do know plenty of clones copy a persons post and photos and one reason to quadruple check any latest friends requests.

Click on your account and send them feedback about whats happening.

So glad I deleted Facebook, instagram, TikTok months ago. All social media is toxic and algorithm is designed to keep you hooked so that they can make money off you. Think I was spending two hours a day on TikTok and more on weekends and browsing through pointless shite on Facebook.

Just horrible vile applications. And you know what my mental health feels 10 times better already.

Op report it to Facebook and deactivate your account for a while.

You should use something else. I phone and text family and friends all over the world. I find it private and reliable. Try it

Whatsapp them. Facetime them. I keep in contact with family all over the world without Facebook. There are many non-toxic ways to do it. Or ignore anything from strangers on Facebook.

"I've tried to contact facebook about it but I cant get any reply, its impossible to speak to an actual person."

I have heard people complain about this before. Same with Twitter, Tik Tok, Ebay, Google etc.

These companies claim to provide x number of jobs in Ireland and elsewhere but what do those people ACTUALLY DO?

When I hear about redundancies and job losses in companies where it's impossible to speak to an actual person, I have no sympathy.

There are so many other ways to keep in contact with people one knows, why would one put oneself out on public media to have private conversations?

Well it's true that Facebook don't respond. They're pathetic. I've been trying to contact them for a year because links were banned in my group. Can you ask the admin of that group to show you the URL of the page that the comments were supposed to come from? It's possible that it's just a cloned page made to look like yours. A page's handle isn't displayed on the home page, so it can be made to look exactly the same, but the address would be different. Turn on two-factor authentication for your accounts anyway so someone can't login without using a code received by email.

Are any new admins been listed on your page? You would have had to add them though, but if someone logged into you account without you knowing, they could have added another person as an admin (and possibly blocked you from seeing their profile, not sure if this is possible, but I think Facebook lists the number of admins somewhere in settings. The activity log should have shown their activity, but if they blocked you, maybe not).

I'm a member of two Facebook admin groups: "Platform Help" and "Group Admin and Mod Help", the latter specifically only for questions about admining groups (Can't post links, because I was banned here once for doing that). They might be able to offer additional help.

Could someone have just set up an “account” with your name and profile pic? There are some real oddballs out there.

It was, recently, brought to my attention that someone had set up an Instagram page with my username, it’s a bizarre one loaded with Ryan Tubridy and RTÉ presenters. They put up a screenshot of a mod warning from the “Radio” forum and all.

It doesn’t bother me, personally, but someone like Kathryn Thomas might want to contact the authorities, just to get it on their radar. Has real Mark Chapman vibes about it.

They’ve set up an account under the name of an Admim on here, as well, but only use that to post deranged comments. Like I said, there are some, serious, nutters about with a lot of time on their hands.

No it was definitely my profile because it showed the date I joined the group on the screenshot. The admin wasnt too helpful tbh, treated me like I was lying and didnt want to engage with me too much, it was like I was bothering him, I thought that in itself was really bad form, like its his group, he's responsible for what goes on in it.

Facebook and board are the only social media I have, Facebook for a few hobbies and groups, most people are sound but social media does seem to be a magnet for the weirdos that cat fish stuff, fake profiles, and some of the things someone I worked with use to tell us about a dating site she was on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 259 ✭✭littlefeet

Also, how did the weirdos manifest themselves before social media?
