Those are the standard day/night rates but there is smart plans or standard 24hr available at the same link.

Yeah I went with the Smart D/N in the end. It's the best available to me.

Why are pople signing up if the contract is not up for

    two weeks im confused?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 131 ✭✭Bannerman1969

My contract was up on 31/3/25 - I know some on here are saying BWG deal was extended by 2 weeks but I did not receive notification of this from Flogas nor did I ring them. It's much of a muchness anyway as the new rates are almost identical to the old ones.

Also the window is only open for a month on the new BWG deal and I'd worry it could be oversubscribed if I waited 2 more weeks and miss out.

So what do u do just ring up and ask for the new offer to extend the one ur on ? #do they ask u are u an employee?

So I'm in a bit of a quandry now

I signed up for the basic Energia D/N rate before Flogas renewed the BWG offer and Energia published the AXA offer

I'm wondering what the best way to switch to the AXA offer is

Should I ring Energia and ask to switch to that offer (I'm not an AXA customer) or should I cancel the switch back to Flogas and then reapply in 2 week to Energia?

I tried signing up for the new BWG offer when that looked like a better offer but apparently my earlier request to switch to Energia has trumped that and my Flogas account is being closed

So I guess if I cancel the switch I'll still be out of contract with Flogas?

Because last year it got pulled without notice more than once, it would randomly pop back up for a day or two and disappear again. They warn about that in their terms:

Offer available from 01 April 2025 to 30 April 2025 but Flogas reserve the right to stop selling this product throughout this period.

Sounds a bit messy alright, AFAIK when you cancel the switch to Energia I think you're stuck with previous Flogas for 2 weeks out of contract before you can switch back to AXA Enegia.

It might be worth contacting Energia first alright to ask them for the AXA rate, if they say no I guess you'll have to do it the awkward way via cancellation and reapplying.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.

So I called Energia and after explaining things to the customer service agent they went ahead and switched me to the AXA plan

Didn't even ask if I was an AXA customer or anything, and no need to cancel the switch and come back in 2 weeks

Ended up going for the axa one myself too.

When I called they told me they cannot help and I had to go through cancellation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,912 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Hmm, so I called the customer help line and they put me through to the cooling off team

The agent must have explained it to the lady from the cooling off department because she said she'd already updated the price plan

I had my smart meter installed a month ago. Currently in Energia's 24hr standard plan with 38% discount. When I asked what smart plans available, all they could offer me was

    • Day 26.33
    • Peak 27.60
    • Night 14.10
    • SC - €300.91

Ask about the Smart Data Plan and got told all those plans on the website are for new customers. Didnt even bother asking about the Axa at that point.

Then they tried to convince me the difference was only a couple of cents so not to worry. I said that 'couple of cents' amounted to nearly €80 over 12 months thanks to Energypal!

Signed up to BWG Flogas straight after the call. Will wait to see if I get a call back from Energia now after the switch take place.

Either way, looking forward to finally being able to charge my EV at around half price with what ever plan I end up on.

I'm surprised they didn't offer the Smart Drive plan with the 4 hours of cheap electricity

Anyway, I still reckon those EV smart plans only make sense if you can compress about 75% of your consumption into a few hours

Interesting enough, for me the Axa plan was about €2 more expensive than the Smart Drive plan for the year, despite me running everything between 2am and 6am for around 9 months now

Signed up to the Energia AXA non-smart plan today. Seems the best for my usage at the moment.

Was very close to just renewing BWG Flogas until @Mickeroo enlightened us.

Are people really that confident that variable rates (such as Energia) won't go up to higher than the fixed Flogas BWG plan? All the mood music I'm hearing suggests that rates will be going up - and soon. I think SSE are up 10% this month already?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,912 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Well it's a big question of how much and

A 10% increase would still be well below Flogas in my case

what are the Energia day and night rates for urban standard day/night meter?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

Really? I thought the rates were pretty similar to start off with

For rural dwellers the flogas smart plans don't make sense due to the sky high standing charge.

Im going to go for the Axa Energia Deal My contract BWG is suppose to be out on 31 st March has anyone changed to this deal yet just worried about the Cancellation Charge now , worse comes to worse its only a year deal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,912 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Just rough estimate from Energypal, the Axa Energia plan was around €920 for the year while the BWG plan was €1080

So if Energia goes up by 10% it'll still be €1012, below Flogas

I suspect in my case it's down to the difference in the night rate. It's around 2c of a difference and 75% of my usage is at night (around 6000kWh)

You're out of contract from the 31st March so should be free to switch

I'm already in the process of switching and haven't been hit with the cancellation charge

What plan did you sign up to with Flogas? What rates are you paying on the new plan? Thanks.

Hard to say predict right now due to volatility.

Wholesale network charges are expected to rise next year on the back of recent storm damage, but ESB Networks has since been clarified it wont impact until Oct 2026.

Wholesale electricity prices rose by almost 68% in the 12 months to January 2025, reaching the highest level in over two years.

But thanks to the Trump tariff circus, wholesale energy markets right now remain very unpredictable, with little sign of improvement in the medium term. Energy prices are taking a battering along with $US/€EUR. If this is sustained and there is a global downturn, demand for energy drops, we could see reductions. We could also see inflationary effects if a full on trade war breaks out. Geopolitical events will create further uncertainty with Ukraine conflict and if a deal is reached.

I went with BWG Flogas as I couldnt get a deal from Energia as an existing customer. I like the idea of fixed rates going forward, but if prices to drop drastically, then its only a 50 quid to break contract.

Equally, if Energia's retention team call me back with an enticing offer (they seem to have form according to some posters), then the annual saving to me on current rates may be over €100 and that would make me consider to switch back.

Basically, no one can say with any certainty at this point which is being reflected in markets globally.

It was definitely showing up ¢26.49 D, ¢13.35 N, and €257 Standing Charge for D/N meters when I clicked on the link this Tuesday. But I called Flogas today and was told the standing charge is the same as the previous BWG plan: €331. That makes Energia a better deal except it's a variable rate.

Check out the previous post about having to wait 2 weeks to switch back again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,912 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

No worries, rang Energia and got it sorted without having to cancel and switch again in 2 weeks

Rang energia and got moved from smart data 33 tariff to the AXA 34%. A miniscule difference but money in my pocket is better than in theirs.
