No birth certificate, stuck with my search!

While researching family history, I discovered my grandfather had a sister they didn't know about.

They knew of her existance only when she died. I got her death certificate and it says she was 74 in 1991 but I can't find any birth certificate for her.

She died in a home which I believe was historically a place for mentally ill and also abandoned children so I'm not sure did she live there her whole life? Her occupation is home help on death certificate.

I would like to find out why she ended up there and where she was for 74 years.

Any idea where I can research? There are no living family members left to ask apart from my dad who remembers everyone was shocked when her death was announced so not sure they knew much anyway

First thing to consider is her age on the death cert could be incorrect so widening the search years might help, also if she was born in a city hospital, in particular but can happen anywhere, she might be registered without a first name, so search for Unknown and surname.

    Great suggestions from 55Gem.

    Does the home still exist?

If she was placed somewhere in early life, then there might be mention of her in Board of Guardian minutes or later county council minutes.

In just over a year, we'll have a new census to check for everyone so definitely her on the list.

I'd go further and leave the forename blank if that doesn't leave you with too many results.

Also, if you know where her siblings were baptised perhaps you could contact that church to see if they have a record or her baptism.
