McGregor sold his whiskey company in 2021 and has had no association with it for a while now so that's pretty doubtful

Think he'll walk back the tariffs today? Lunchtime maybe? Aren't Apple actually exempt from loads of stuff too? This is wild. Let it keep going because the reality is the rest of the world ultimately benefits. If there's less materials and goods imported into America then in theory there should be a surplus and reduction in cost.

He's threatening the invasion of Greenland, calling for ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and **** over a nation that was invaded by Russia. The upheaval of norms can make things worse...

They even have gobshite Eric on the case trying to get people to come in for negotiations - Are they worried nobody wants to and will just hot them back?

What's really is bizarre is that the UK are currently negotiating to return the Chagos Islands (known currently as the British Indian Ocean Territories) to Mauritius. And because the US military base is on the island of Diego Garcia, they need US sign off to be able to do the deal

And the UK were very worried that Trump would just veto it because he wouldn't understand why you would just give away your territory, but just yesterday he signed off on it:

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/apr/01/donald-trump-signs-off-uks-handover-of-chagos-islands-to-mauritius

And then adds the tariffs anyway! I don't really get this one.

Apple got an exemption during Trump's first term, I don't believe they got one this time around.

Amazon was planning on setting up a rival to Temu/Shein, same cheap priced shipped direct from China. Guess that won't be going ahead now.

Everything Trump touches turns to 💩

I like his use of toddler-level reverse psychology

Works on his dad, he's seen it all his life, so it will work on all other countries right?

Tim Apple must be getting peeved off by all of this

I genuinely try not to wish people harm and I feel bad for the decent Americans out there, that are mortified by the current leadership, but these people need to feel some pain after voting this cretin back into power. I've been wondering what it'd take for the MAGA twits to finally start doubting Trump. Maybe seeing their 401k's going down the swanny might start to swing the tide of opinion a bit? God only knows.

    Bit like the cop movies

Yeah one thing not obvious in the reporting of the tariffs is that in addition to the baseline tariff of 10%, he's also removed the exception for goods less than $800 in value if they originate in China or Hong Kong (comes into effect next month).

That's why cheap tat and fast fashion from Asia has succeeded across the west, because the tariffs never mattered if their customers never went higher than $800 in a single order (EU have the same rule but for €150 or less)

Yes .it should have been obvious but tbh I only realized this yesterday. I had a picture of Trump attempting to rebuild the auto industry as was. (not that I supported that notion-I just subconsciously assumed it)

I suppose that if they were successful in "reshoring" a big industrial manufacturing industry like the auto industry in the States its employment benefits would be on the basis of the service jobs it would create around it.

It seems to me that America should try to get with the flow of the world economy rather than trying to "stop the world I want to get off"

As Richard Quest was saying on CNN the world will learn to "trade around" the States if they decide to be /follow the dunce in the room.(he didn't say that .I did)

The States is fairly unique in being fairly self sufficient in resources but countries who are not can just "trade resources" among themselves.

We had King Canute (who was actually just showing that you couldn't stop the tide) but now we have King Don who believes he can.

… there was a saying in Dublin some years ago. - if someone offended you just “iganore him iganatius”. ( ignore him ignatius.)

Some cold shouldering of US reps is required. - a wee while in Coventry might make them think. They seem to think we are hanging on their every word and are oblivious to the guffaws.

    2 trillion

Or 8000$ wiped out on average from every single 401k pension pot in US in last hour

    Don’t forget to say thanks!

that’s about 15 years worth of daily double egg consumption per person per day at todays inflated prices

I somehow missed that he's just filed to sell his entire holding of his media stock (Truth Social)

    Reported on CNN

The Irish Farmers’ Association said the tariffs would “impact the competitiveness” of Irish products, like Kerrygold butter.

“Kerrygold is now the second best-selling butter brand in the US, where we sent almost 500 million euros (about $554 million) worth of product in 2024. The market accounts for about 7.5% of our total dairy exports,” it said in a statement.

Looking online, plenty of Americans seem to be buying the "these are the tariffs levied on the us!" crap.

how in hell did this guy become the leader of the free world??

There's 346,795,913 people in the US, and a very large portion of them are as dumb as a bag of stones.

Very little reaction from the Indian or Chinese stock exchanges over the last 24 hours says in no uncertain terms "Am I bothered Trump?. Does my face look like I am bothered?"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 731 ✭✭✭engineerws

No getting your point. The US has been heading for complete disaster. It's unlikely this will fix things but a hit like that if it were to fix things wouldn't be a big deal.

Which do you prize more highly, people's pensions or the entire USA? So a 2 trillion shock wouldn't be d big deal if it saved USA (unlikely it'll work out that way).

Stellantis (US car manufacturer, think; Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram etc) just fired 900 people in US

    It begins

Dear comrade, Americans are obsessed with the stock market and have to manage own pensions, pension is that thing you get after retirement which usually occurs to people who live past the life expectancy of an average fellow Russian

Ups and down in stock market in few months lead to employment and unemployment and booms and recessions

All the NA banks down around 10%. That is big.

Possibly a bit of a bounce the other way after lunch. But still.

I don't see it as being an issue for our butter, last time I was there Kerrygold was about twice the price of the next nearest product (Costco, kirkland brand) and about 4 times the price of the entry brand stuff. An extra 20% won't drive what are clearly very brand-loyal consumers away.

Important to remember, when you place a tariff on an import the locally produced alternative tends to rise also. Also worth remembering the price you see on the shelf has many different parts to it and they are only applying a tariff to one part of it

The actual difference for the consumer might be closer to 5% or 10%. That's not going to cause Kerry group to go bust anytime soon

Here is Reuters on this event. Seems to be "temporary"

"Stellantis NV <STLAM.MI> said on Thursday it was temporarily laying off 900 workers at five U.S. facilities after President Donald Trump's tariffs were announced, and temporarily pausing production at an assembly plant in Mexico and one in Canada. The maker of Ram trucks and Jeeps said the U.S. plants affected are powertrain and stamping facilities that provide parts for the two factories in Mexico and Canada that are being idled."

Does anyone have a theory for why he decided to leverage a tariff on McDonald Island?
